Cheryl is a female given name common in English speaking countries.

The name appeared in the early 20th century and was most popular during the early Cold War period. In America it was most popular from the 1940s to early 1980s and in the UK from the 1950s to early 1990s.

There are several prevailing theories about its etymology. The most common is that it has Italo-Celtic roots and is an Anglicised version of either the French name Cherie (from Latin Cara, being "beloved"; see also Carissa (name)) or the Welsh name Carys (a cognate of "Cara"), modelled on names such as Meryl and Beryl that were popular during the early decades of the 20th century.

A less popular theory is that the name is Germanic in origin and is a feminine version of the Germanic male name Charles, which means "free man". An Anglo-Saxon (male) variant of Charles is Ceorl. Feminine variations of Charles include Charlotte, Carly, Carla and Caroline.

Cheryl is a four-member, semi-anonymous, cat-masked artist collective based in Brooklyn, New York, known for its video art, museum installations, participatory events and dance parties. Cheryl originated in July 2008 in the Park Slope neighborhood of Brooklyn. Since then, Cheryl has regularly produced thematic art/performance/dance events and installations in New York and in Europe.

Cheryl is best known for its thematic video work, often paired with an upcoming event of the same theme. Cheryl's work has been showcased through various installations and events with the Museum of Modern Art, MoMA PS1, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Brooklyn Museum, Palazzo Strozzi, the Jewish Museum (New York), and the Bruce High Quality Foundation among others.

Cheryl has been featured in/on The New York Times, New York magazine, The New York Observer, Out magazine, V, W, Time Out, Black Book magazine, The Village Voice, Flavor magazine (Paris), Glamour (France), NBC and RAI among other outlets.

Cheryl Fernandez-Versini

Cheryl Ann Fernandez-Versini (née Tweedy, formerly Cole; born 30 June 1983) is an English singer, dancer, and television personality who is known by the mononym Cheryl in the context of her recording promotions. She rose to fame in late 2002 when she auditioned for the reality television show Popstars: The Rivals on ITV. The programme announced that Fernandez-Versini had won a place as a member of the girl group Girls Aloud. The group's line-up remained the same throughout their history and during that time the group achieved a string of twenty consecutive top ten singles in the United Kingdom (including four number one singles) and six platinum albums (two of which went to number one) and earned five Brit Award nominations from 2005 to 2010. At the 2009 Brit Awards, Girls Aloud won Best Single with their song "The Promise". In early 2013, the group announced that they had split up.

Fernandez-Versini embarked on a solo career and released her first solo studio album 3 Words (2009). The album became a commercial success and spawned three successful singles including the lead single from the album, "Fight for This Love," which debuted at number one on the UK charts, becoming the best selling single of the year. 2010 saw the release of Fernandez-Versini's second studio album Messy Little Raindrops, which produced two singles, the first being "Promise This" which also debuted at number one. Fernandez-Versini released her third solo album A Million Lights on 18 June 2012, with lead single "Call My Name" becoming her third number one single.Only Human was released in 2014 and spawned three singles including "Crazy Stupid Love" and "I Don't Care". Both singles went to number one in the UK and made Fernandez-Versini the first British female to have five number ones in the UK. The singer still holds the record, jointly with Jess Glynne.
