Mit der Analogie zwischen dem erfolgreichen Freiheitskampf der Israeliten und dem englischen Sieg über die aufständischen Jakobiten war »Judas Maccabaeus« noch populärer als der »Messias«. Namensgeber des Werkes war ein jüdischer Freiheitskämpfer, der im 2. Jahrhundert v. Chr. lebte und dessen Geschichte in den Büchern der Makkabäer überliefert wurde.
