Why South Africa is still so segregated

For decades, South Africa was under apartheid: a series of laws that divided people by race. Then, in the 1990s, those laws were dismantled. But many of the barriers they created continue to divide South Africans by skin color - which in turn determines their quality of life, access to jobs, and wealth. Racial division was built into the fabric of cities throughout South Africa, and it still hasn't been uprooted.
That's partly because, while apartheid was the culmination of South Africa's racial divisions, it wasn't the beginning of them. That story starts closer to the 1800s, when the British built a network of railroads that transforme...

For years, a small group of investigative journalists in South Africa had been on the trail of a gigantic corruption scandal. When they discovered signs of far-reaching corruption involving Jacob Zuma, then president of South Africa, a pernicious disinformation campaign was mounted against the integrity of the journalists.
Then one day in early 2017, the journalists unexpectedly received a hard drive containing thousands of photos, emails and videos - evidence that laid bare the way the South African state had been taken over by private individuals,...

Soldiers have been deployed on the streets of Johannesburg to try and contain widespread looting and rioting.
The violence followed the jailing of ex-president Jacob Zuma for 15 months last week for contempt of court.
However, Sky News Africa correspondent John Sparks, who is in Johannesburg, said poverty and economic disparity caused by the COVID pandemic was also a factor in the disorder.

That story starts closer to the 1800s, when the British built a network of railroads that transformed the region's economy into one that excluded most Black people -- and then made that exclusion the law.

A country falls into the hands of kleptocrats, a state is taken over. This happens again and again, all over the world. Including in South Africa, of all places, where the fight for democracy against a brutal apartheid regime was so hard-won.
For years, a small group of investigative journalists in South Africa had been on the trail of a gigantic corruption scandal. When they discovered signs of far-reaching corruption involving Jacob Zuma, then president of South Africa, a pernicious disinformation campaign was mounted against the integrity of the journalists.
Then one day in early 2017, the journalists unexpectedly received a hard drive containing thousands of photos, emails and videos - evidence that laid bare the way the South African state had been taken over by private individuals, with the help of politicians.
The so-called Gupta Leaks not only proved that the journalists had been right in their suspicions, but showed that the situation was much worse than they thought. Since taking office as president, Jacob Zuma had systematically awarded lucrative government contracts to three brothers from India, the Guptas.
Thanks to their good friend Zuma, members of the Gupta family were able to use the proceeds of an entire nation for their own gain, acquiring holdings in coal mines, media and IT companies, and even government positions.
The plundering of the state had been shamelessly supported by a group of elite international advisors. As criticism from the media grew louder, the British PR firm Bell Pottinger was hired. The journalists were defamed as agents of "white monopoly capital," and the Guptas stylized as victims of a racist press. But after the publication of the Gupta Leaks, the graft stopped. The Zuma clan and the Guptas lost their power.
When a Judicial Commission of Inquiry is finally ordered, Zuma himself testifies. His defense: it's all lies and fake news. In interviews, investigative journalists express their concerns about the global drift toward an ever-increasing entanglement between business and government, and the polarization it causes. Presidents and multinationals live unassailably in their own bubble. As a journalist, all you can do is make life in the bubble a little less comfortable. Is there still room for justice in South Africa's hard-won fledgling democracy? What lessons can be learned for the rest of the world?

Soldiers have been deployed on the streets of Johannesburg to try and contain widespread looting and rioting.
The violence followed the jailing of ex-president Jacob Zuma for 15 months last week for contempt of court.
However, Sky News Africa correspondent John Sparks, who is in Johannesburg, said poverty and economic disparity caused by the COVID pandemic was also a factor in the disorder.

Lyrics:
You're a good soldier
Choosing your battles
Pick yourself up
And dust yourself off
Get back in the saddle
You're on the front line
Everyone's watching
You know it's serious
We're getting closer
This isn't over
The pressure's on
You feel it
But you got it all
Believe it
When you fall get up, oh oh
If you fall get up, eh eh
Tsamina mina zangalewa
'Cause this is Africa
Tsamina mina, eh eh
Waka waka, eh eh
Tsamina mina zangalewa

The Frontier Route - Eastern Cape South Africa
The Frontier Region of South Africa's Eastern Cape - incredibly beautiful and peaceful - was once the most contested area of the country. It's called Frontier Country, and bears the scars of nine Frontier wars, the first beginning in 1799 and the last one ending a hundred years later. It was one of the most prolonged struggles by African people against European intrusion.

Battle of Grahamstown – 1819 – 5th Xhosa War
The Battle of Grahamstown took place on 22 April 1819, during the 5th Xhosa War, at the frontier settlement of Grahamstown in what is now the Eastern Cape province of South Africa. The confrontation involved the defence of the town by the British garrison, aided by a group of Khoikhoi marksmen, from an attack by a large force of attacking Xhosa warriors.
Prelude
Following problems with cattle rustling in the area, the British commander Sommerset ordered Xhosa chief Ngqika to speak to other Xhosa chiefs and put an end to the cattle and horse theft. But Ngqika had no real power over the other chiefs. Sommerset offered military support to the Xhosa chief Ngqika in his efforts to curb the cattle theft. When Ngqika was attacked and defeated at Amalinde by rival chief Ndlambe in 1818, the Britis...

Battle of Berea – 1852 – Xhosa Wars
The Battle of Berea took place on 20 December 1852 during the Kaffir Wars in what was then Basutoland . Moshoeshoe I
Following the defeat of an ill-armed and inadequate punitive force at Viervoet the previous year by the Sotho tribe of Basutoland under their leader Moshoeshoe, the British Major-General Cathcart gathered together at Platberg in the Free State an overpowering force of over 2,000 men. The force consisted of infantry detachments of the 2nd Regiment of Foot, the 43rd Regiment of Foot, the 73rd Regiment of Foot Regiment, the 74th R...

Maqoma: The Warrior
Unlike his father, Maqoma refused to bow down to British domination. He used guerilla tactics, started two wars and was the mightiest Xhosa warrior!
Maqoma: The Renowned Frontier Chief
Born in 1798 in Rharhabe, he was the Right Hand Son of Ngqika, King of the Rharhabe division of the Xhosa nation. He became chief of the Xhosa and died at a grand age of 75 on Robben Island in 1873.
Maqoma was opposed to his father's ceding land between the Fish and Keiskamma rivers to the British-run Cape Colony, and wanted to regain ancestral land, so moved into the "Neutral Zone" in 1822 to start a new chiefdom on the Kat River banks, but colonial raids expelled him in 1829, the year his father died.
Maqoma took up arms in 1834 in the Sixth Xhosa War and became known as the most powerful Rhar...

When Ngqika was attacked and defeated at Amalinde by rival chief Ndlambe in 1818, the British gave instruction to Lieutenant Colonel Brereton to proceed to Ngqika's assistance with a combined force of burghers and soldiers. In December 1818, Colonel Brereton crossed the Fish River, and after joining forces with Ngqika's adherents, attacked Ndlambe. Instead of retalitating, Ndlambe's warriors retreated into dense bush, which afforded them shelter. Their kraals were destroyed, and 23 000 head of cattle were seized. The British commander withdrew his army before Ndlambe was thoroughly defeated, and on reaching Grahamstown the burghers were disbanded and permitted to return to their homes. By 1819, the frontier settlement of Grahamstown had been in existence for seven years. It consisted of about 30 buildings, including a military barracks. Apart from a few hundred civilians, there were about 350 soldiers from various regiments stationed in Grahamstown under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Thomas Willshire. Ndlambe was then convinced by the prophet-warrior Makana, also known as Nxele or Links , that the Gods would be on his side if the British at Grahamstown were attacked and that the British bullets would turn to water. He therefore gave Makana his backing for an attack and sent a message to Lieutenant Colonel Thomas Willshire, the British commander at Grahamstown, notifying him of his intentions. Makana had sent a notice of war to Willshire the day before, saying he would ‘breakfast’ with him on the 22nd, to which Willshire responded by saying ‘Everything will be ready for you on your arrival,’

Maqoma took up arms in 1834 in the Sixth Xhosa War and became known as the most powerful Rharhabe chief.
In 1847 the British claimed Rharhabe land under British "Kaffraria"; as diplomacy failed, guerrilla warfare was the only option for Maqoma in the War of Mlanjeni (or 8th Xhosa War) from 1850-53, frustrating the British.
He was later imprisoned on Robben Island for 12 years.
Maqoma died in 1873, but will be remembered as one of the greatest Xhosa leaders.
