A sandstorm hit Guazhou County in northwest China's Gansu Province on Friday afternoon.
Mobile phone videos showed the height of the wall of sand was over three times that of five-story buildings. The whole county was enveloped by the storm in less than ten minutes.
The storm brought strong gales, with speed of more than 75 kilometers per hour, and dropped visibility to less than 600 meters.
Due to the decreased visibility five vehicles collided on a highway causing a fire and leaving one person injured.
A short rainstorm cleared the skies across the county later.
As the storm moved fast and was over quickly, it did not cause much damage to the local industries or agriculture.

A 118-meter-high building was demolished on Sunday morning in Xi'an City, northwest China's Shaanxi Province, in around 13 seconds.
The building, 26 floors in all, fell down northwards as had been planned, with the protecting net set around it standing completely intact.
"The operation worked quite well. For one thing the building collapsed in the correct direction and for another thing it fell down at a low height and was fully exploded. Both the noise and trembling of the demolition were under controllable range," said Zhao Fuxing, a demolition expert and professor from the Xi'an Jiaotong University.
"A bar is located only seven meters away from the building and it hadn't been affected at all. There wasn't even a piece of stone dropping on the bar. I'm quite satisfied with the operation. It worked well," said Zhao.
It was the highest building demolished by explosion in China, using some 1.4 tons of explosives.
The operators estimated the demolition created around 240,000 square meters of construction waste that will be cleared in 70 days.
The building with a gross floor area of 37,000 square meters in the hi-tech industrial development zone had never been used and its lot will be used for a commercial complex.

Chinese President Xi Jinping paid a special visit to the Xincheng Mosque in Yinchuan City Tuesday morning, during his current fact-finding tour of the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region in northwest China.
The Chinese president chatted and compared notes with imams and Islamic followers in and outside of the mosque, the largest in the autonomous region and one of the largest in northwest China. Xi offered cordial greetings and good wishes to the Muslims in the region.
Xi said the ethnic minority groups and their religions in China have been evolved and developed throughout an over 5,000-year history of civilization and they have been growing on solid foundations. The president hoped religious people to play a positive role in poverty reduction and in promotion of development while carrying on and forwarding the traditions of loving their country and religions.

Muslims across northwest China on Wednesday celebrated their traditional Eid Al-Fitr Festival that marks the official end of the Holy month of Ramadan.
In Kashi City of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, more than 30,000 Muslims gathered at the Id Kah Mosque in the morning for the last prayer of Ramadan.
As a worldwide tradition, the Muslims sat shoulder by shoulder in an open area and gave their thanks to Allah.
Following the prayer was the first daylight meal in a month – a ritual observed with joy after a month of austerity.
Streets in Kashi were bustling once again as restaurants reopened, and the feasting began with Sama dance - a Uyghur folk dance people performed when praying for fruitful hunting and good harvest in ancient times and now also a must-do for the holiday celebration.
"I've put on new clothes. Later on I'm meeting with friends and other family members," said Ishan Haji, a local resident in Kashi.
"I don't feel tired at all (after dancing). It has been a great day for me," said Muhammad Nijat, another Kashi resident.
In Qinghai Province -- home to nearly 1.1 million Muslims, a prayer was held at the Dongguan Great Mosque in the capital city of Xining on Wednesday morning, attended by 150,000 people.
In Wuzhong City of Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, another compact Muslim community, local people started celebration early Wednesday morning.
Residents gathered together with their families and friends for their first daytime meal after the Ramadan.
In Gansu Province, Muslims also prayed for better life and held various activities to celebrate the religious festival.

The pilot of an acrobatic plane was killed after it plummeted to the ground during an aerobatic show in northwest China's Gansu Province Saturday morning, the event organizer said.
The crash at the 1st Silk Road International General Aviation Convention in the city of Zhangye caused no other casualties on the ground.

The Uyghurs /ˈwiːɡər/ (Uyghur: ئۇيغۇر, ULY: Uyghur ;[ʔʊjˈʁʊː]; Old Turkic: 
;Chinese: 维吾尔族; pinyin: Wéiwúěr zú) are a Turkic ethnic group living in Eastern and Central Asia. Today, Uyghurs live primarily in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region in China, where they are one of 55 officially recognized ethnic minorities.
An estimated 80% of Xinjiang's Uyghurs live in the southwestern portion of the region, the Tarim Basin. Outside Xinjiang, the largest community of Uyghurs in China is in Taoyuan County, in south-central Hunan. Outside of China, significant diasporic communities of Uyghurs exist in the Central Asian countries of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Uzbekistan, and in Turkey. Smaller communities are found in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Australia, Canada, and the United States.
They practice Islam and are a physically diverse ethnic group ranging from Western Eurasian (Europeans, Middle Eastern) to a more mixed race and East Asian appearance.

Sandstorm Hits Northwest China County
A sandstorm hit Guazhou County in northwest China's Gansu Province on Friday afternoon. Mobile phone videos showed the height of the wall of sand was over three times that of five-story buildings. The whole county was enveloped by the storm in less than ten minutes. The storm brought strong gales, with speed of more than 75 kilometers per hour, and dropped visibility to less than 600 meters. Due to the decreased visibility five vehicles collided on a highway causing a fire and leaving one person injured. A short rainstorm cleared the skies across the county later. As the storm moved fast and was over quickly, it did not cause much damage to the local industries or agriculture. A 118-meter-high building was demolished on Sunday morning in Xi'an City, northwest China's Shaanxi Province, in around 13 seconds. The building, 26 floors in all, fell down northwards as had been planned, with the protecting net set around it standing completely intact. "The operation worked quite well. For one thing the building collapsed in the correct direction and for another thing it fell down at a low height and was fully exploded. Both the noise and trembling of the demolition were under controllable range," said Zhao Fuxing, a demolition expert and professor from the Xi'an Jiaotong University. A 118-meter-high building was demolished on Sunday morning in Xi'an City, northwest China's Shaanxi Province, in around 13 seconds.
The building, 26 floors in all, fell down northwards as had been planned, with the protecting net set around it standing completely intact.
"The operation worked quite well. For one thing the building collapsed in the correct direction and for another thing it fell down at a low height and was fully exploded. Both the noise and trembling of the demolition were under controllable range," said Zhao Fuxing, a demolition expert and professor from the Xi'an Jiaotong University.
"A bar is located only seven meters away from the building and it hadn't been affected at all. There wasn't even a piece of stone dropping on the bar. I'm quite satisfied with the operation. It worked well," said Zhao.
It was the highest building demolished by explosion in China, using some 1.4 tons of explosives.
The operators estimated the demolition created around 240,000 square meters of construction waste that will be cleared in 70 days.
The building with a gross floor area of 37,000 square meters in the hi-tech industrial development zone had never been used and its lot will be used for a commercial complex.

"I've put on new clothes. Later on I'm meeting with friends and other family members," said Ishan Haji, a local resident in Kashi.
"I don't feel tired at all (after dancing). It has been a great day for me," said Muhammad Nijat, another Kashi resident.
In Qinghai Province -- home to nearly 1.1 million Muslims, a prayer was held at the Dongguan Great Mosque in the capital city of Xining on Wednesday morning, attended by 150,000 people.
In Wuzhong City of Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, another compact Muslim community, local people started celebration early Wednesday morning.
Residents gathered together with their families and friends for their first daytime meal after the Ramadan.
In Gansu Province, Muslims also prayed for better life and held various activities to celebrate the religious festival.

So tonight is our very last night in Yangshuo, a charming little town in Southwestern China, so we're going to show you around the main strip.
So our first stop is going to be the street food market. I haven't eaten in maybe two hours, so it's time to get a snack.
If I had to choose between Guilin and Yangshuo the two most popular cities in this region it's definitely Yangshuo. It's a more historic town. It's a lot more pedestrian friendly and there are great
As we were wandering around the night market tonight we had lots of people come up to us and ask to take photos beside us. At least probably four or five times and we finally filmed the last one. It was really cool. We were like celebrities in China. Yeah, almost famous.
So, this market had some pretty cool souvenirs. We saw fake Chinese passports if you want to take one of those home. They also had combs carved out of ox bone. They had these stamps where you can get your Chinese name carved on them and then you can just sign documents that way which is pretty cool.
Today we are visiting a local hill tribe that just lives a few hours outside of Guilin and we've come here because this community is known for the women's long hair. They grow it out and it's almost a meter and a half long and we're actually going to be watching a performance where they spin their hair and wrap it up and show us how they wear it.
Today we're in between Guilin and Yangshuo and we're doing a special river cruise down the Li River.
So this tour is going to be an hour and a half long and we're going to get to enjoy some pretty stunning landscapes, so I'm pretty excited about it.
When I came here two years ago it was hazy and foggy. Now it's a gorgeous glorious day.
Here we are at the Longji Rice Fields which are located just outside of Guilin. We've had such good luck. Check out the weather and the views behind.
So this is the Guilin main square. It gets really busy here at night. Lots of shops, restaurants, eateries. You can do it all here.

So we are now at the lake and the main attraction are the these two pagodas that light up at night.

Oh, that mapo tofu looks so good. Really generous sized portion.
Well, it's hard to believe but our time in Hong Kong has already expired. Today we're taking a train ride. Where are we going? We're crossing over into China.
We are in Guangzho. Apparently there are two train stations. We arrived at the one that is on the East End of the City and we had to get across town to the other and it was difficult but we need to keep going.
So right now we are in Guangzho station waiting for our train to Guilin. And we happen to be waiting in the VIP room.
There is no tea in this tea room.
We're going to Guilin.
Uh, we're looking for number ten.
So we're in the dining cart now getting ready to have dinner. Let's see what is on the menu if we can even read it. We barely got a seat here.
Decision time. So we did manage to find an English menu which makes things a lot easier.
Fish one. Tofu with pork. One. Okay. Rice. One Rice? Okay. Beer. One. Okay. Ah, green tea - one. okay.

So tonight is our very last night in Yangshuo, a charming little town in Southwestern China, so we're going to show you around the main strip.
So our first stop is going to be the street food market. I haven't eaten in maybe two hours, so it's time to get a snack.
If I had to choose between Guilin and Yangshuo the two most popular cities in this region it's definitely Yangshuo. It's a more historic town. It's a lot more pedestrian friendly and there are great
As we were wandering around the night market tonight we had lots of people come up to us and ask to take photos beside us. At least probably four or five times and we finally filmed the last one. It was really cool. We were like celebrities in China. Yeah, almost famous.
So, this market had some pretty cool souvenirs. We saw fake Chinese passports if you want to take one of those home. They also had combs carved out of ox bone. They had these stamps where you can get your Chinese name carved on them and then you can just sign documents that way which is pretty cool.
Today we are visiting a local hill tribe that just lives a few hours outside of Guilin and we've come here because this community is known for the women's long hair. They grow it out and it's almost a meter and a half long and we're actually going to be watching a performance where they spin their hair and wrap it up and show us how they wear it.
Today we're in between Guilin and Yangshuo and we're doing a special river cruise down the Li River.
So this tour is going to be an hour and a half long and we're going to get to enjoy some pretty stunning landscapes, so I'm pretty excited about it.
When I came here two years ago it was hazy and foggy. Now it's a gorgeous glorious day.
Here we are at the Longji Rice Fields which are located just outside of Guilin. We've had such good luck. Check out the weather and the views behind.
So this is the Guilin main square. It gets really busy here at night. Lots of shops, restaurants, eateries. You can do it all here.

So we are now at the lake and the main attraction are the these two pagodas that light up at night.

Oh, that mapo tofu looks so good. Really generous sized portion.
Well, it's hard to believe but our time in Hong Kong has already expired. Today we're taking a train ride. Where are we going? We're crossing over into China.
We are in Guangzho. Apparently there are two train stations. We arrived at the one that is on the East End of the City and we had to get across town to the other and it was difficult but we need to keep going.
So right now we are in Guangzho station waiting for our train to Guilin. And we happen to be waiting in the VIP room.
There is no tea in this tea room.
We're going to Guilin.
Uh, we're looking for number ten.
So we're in the dining cart now getting ready to have dinner. Let's see what is on the menu if we can even read it. We barely got a seat here.
Decision time. So we did manage to find an English menu which makes things a lot easier.
Fish one. Tofu with pork. One. Okay. Rice. One Rice? Okay. Beer. One. Okay. Ah, green tea - one. okay.
So this is the friend fish with a sweet and sour sauce.

China Launches Tiangong-2 Space Lab
China has launched its Tiangong-2 space lab from its Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in northwest China on Thursday at 22:04 local time. The space lab is lifted off on top of a Long March-2F carrier rocket. Tiangong-2 is capable of docking with manned and cargo spacecraft and will accommodate two Chinese astronauts for up to 30 days during its orbiting the earth. Its overall manned flight of 33 days with this mission will be 18 days longer than its predecessor Tiangong-1. The Shenzhou-11 manned spacecraft, to be blasted off in mid-October also from Jiuquan, will send the two astronauts into space for docking with Tiangong-2. China successfully launched its second experimental space laboratory late on Thursday. The Long March-2F T2 rocket, carrying Tiangong-2 space lab, blasted off at 10:04 pm (1404 GMT) from Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in northwest China. Muslims celebrated Eid al-Adha, known in China as the Corban Festival, in various ways across northwest China on Monday. The festival, which was originally a day of sacrifice, is celebrated every year on December 10 of the Islamic calendar. Chinese Muslims enjoy a four-day holiday for the festival, and with another three-day break for the Mid-Autumn Festival national holiday from Thursday, they will have the whole week off work. China has made great achievements in laying seamless railway track on the Qinghai-Tibet railway section since 2010. The Qinghai-Tibet railway section is a high-elevation railway that connects Xining, capital of Qinghai Province in northwest China, to Lhasa, capital of Tibet Autonomous Region in southwest China. The length of the railway is 1,956 kilometers. The local department started to replace the common railway track into seamless ones in 2010. Muslims in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, northwest China, came together on Monday to celebrate Eid al-Adha, known as the Corban Festival in China, which is one of the most important Islamic festivals of the year. “Corban” comes from the Arabic word “qurbani,” meaning sacrifice. During the festival, many Muslims travel to Mecca to take part in the Hajj pilgrimage, while others who stay behind slay livestock as a sacrifice to Allah. China has launched its Tiangong-2 space lab from its Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in northwest China on Thursday at 22:04 local time.
The space lab is lifted off on top of a Long March-2F carrier rocket.
Tiangong-2 is capable of docking with manned and cargo spacecraft and will accommodate two Chinese astronauts for up to 30 days during its orbiting the earth. Its overall manned flight of 33 days with this mission will be 18 days longer than its predecessor Tiangong-1.
The Shenzhou-11 manned spacecraft, to be blasted off in mid-October also from Jiuquan, will send the two astronauts into space for docking with Tiangong-2.
While in space, Tiangong-2 will conduct 14 experiments on space science and on application of space technology, to prepare for longer space flight and longer space habitation.
The space lab will also carry out in-orbit refueling and in-orbit maintenance.
China's multi-billion-dollar space program aims at putting a permanent manned space station into service around 2022. The construction of the country's first orbiting space station will be completed by around 2020.

The Qinghai-Tibet railway section is a high-elevation railway that connects Xining, capital of Qinghai Province in northwest China, to Lhasa, capital of Tibet Autonomous Region in southwest China. The length of the railway is 1,956 kilometers.

The Xining railway section of Qinghai-Tibet Railway Company has finished the 1,338-meter-long Fenghuoshan rail tunnel located 4,913 meters above sea level - the rail tunnel with the highest altitude in the world; and the rails of Tanggula Railway Station located 5,072 meters above sea level - the railway station with the highest altitude in the world.
What's more, it has also made a record to lay seamless rail for four kilometers in frozen plateau area within a day. It has finished the seamless rails for 591 kilometers in non-frozen area and 520 kilometers in permafrost area. A total of 677 bridges and 26 tunnels have also been completed.
More than 700 men work for the railway laying each day on average, and the number even reached over 900 from time to time.
"We organized the work scientifically and carried out the construction work according to the plan and blueprint with clear responsibility given to each staff member," said Zhang Chengpeng, director of the railway replacement department under Xining Railway section.
According to Tan Junping, a technician from the railway replacement department, a total of 11 items of technological improvement can achieve the top level in China and even in the world; and they have been constantly improving technologies and making innovations.
"Each project that we have finished is unprecedented. If we can challenge the limit and race to the top, it's certain that we can manage and use the plateau railway well," said Wang Shupeng, chief of Xining Railway section.

wn.com/China Makes Great Achievements In Laying Seamless Rails On Qinghai Tibet Railway
China has made great achievements in laying seamless railway track on the Qinghai-Tibet railway section since 2010.
The Qinghai-Tibet railway section is a high-elevation railway that connects Xining, capital of Qinghai Province in northwest China, to Lhasa, capital of Tibet Autonomous Region in southwest China. The length of the railway is 1,956 kilometers.
The local department started to replace the common railway track into seamless ones in 2010.
The Xining railway section of Qinghai-Tibet Railway Company has finished the 1,338-meter-long Fenghuoshan rail tunnel located 4,913 meters above sea level - the rail tunnel with the highest altitude in the world; and the rails of Tanggula Railway Station located 5,072 meters above sea level - the railway station with the highest altitude in the world.
What's more, it has also made a record to lay seamless rail for four kilometers in frozen plateau area within a day. It has finished the seamless rails for 591 kilometers in non-frozen area and 520 kilometers in permafrost area. A total of 677 bridges and 26 tunnels have also been completed.
More than 700 men work for the railway laying each day on average, and the number even reached over 900 from time to time.
"We organized the work scientifically and carried out the construction work according to the plan and blueprint with clear responsibility given to each staff member," said Zhang Chengpeng, director of the railway replacement department under Xining Railway section.
According to Tan Junping, a technician from the railway replacement department, a total of 11 items of technological improvement can achieve the top level in China and even in the world; and they have been constantly improving technologies and making innovations.
"Each project that we have finished is unprecedented. If we can challenge the limit and race to the top, it's certain that we can manage and use the plateau railway well," said Wang Shupeng, chief of Xining Railway section.

Whenever we speak of the Silk Road, the mind's eye conjures up a single merchant traveling on a camel laden with goods, most likely on his way to Rome. The discovery of multiple artifacts and excavated documents in northwest China allows us to revise this image. In fact, few people moving along the Silk Road were long-distance merchants. Under tight government supervision, merchants usually stayed on circuits close to home and exchanged goods for other goods, often not using coins at all.
