Millions of these gnus join forces annually to participate in one huge migration - always with luscious grass in their sights. Roaring, snorting, bucking, continuously reproductive en route, they head west - across the Serengeti from Tanzania to Kenya and back. With a large variety of animals in their wake - friend and foe: zebra families that resemble pale flotsam in a dark ocean amidst the gnu herds; or lions, and hyaenas in hope of their next victims. Along their way, they encounter hippopotami and crocodiles - and all of them embroiled in the cycle of "devour and be devoured". The filmmakers follow the artiodactyls, armed with their cameras and lay in wait on the so-called "birthing meadow". There, in the world's largest maternity room, 250.000 calves will be born within the next three weeks. The journey from there to the pasture regions of Kenya is especially dangerous for young animals - and here the film also illustrates nature's harshness. And then there is the "revenge of the gnus", something that Vita and Rolf Köster have become acquainted with. The two filmmakers gained unusual access to the world's most famous game reserve whilst shooting their film in search of the even-toed animals.
Some of the world's most incredible animal migrations take place in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem. Among them are a 120-mile pronghorn migration and nine elk herds with unique migration patterns. While on assignment in Yellowstone, Joe Riis was able to capture the awe-inspiring migrations that few tourists get to see.

In december 2013 we made a safari to Lake Manyara, the Central Serengeti and Ndutu in the southern part of the Serengeti.
The main reason for this journey was to experience a part of the Great Migration of the Gnu or Wildebeest, Zebra and Gazelles.
The Serengeti did not disappoint us.
After many months of drought the first rains began to fall when we arrived early december. The Serengeti plains changed color within a week from dry yellow to fresh green.
These slowly from north to south moving rains, made the herds of Wildebeest leave the woodlands and crossing rivers, to the fresh pastures in the south (Ndutu) where they will give birth to their calves in February. About 350.000 animals are born within only a couple of days. This also means that the same number of animals die during their yearly migration.
During our 6 nights stay in this area we experienced only a small part of this great event that never stops, also known as 'the greatest show on earth'.
Out of about 1.5 million Gnus we saw some tens of thousands migrating animals.
And the Serengeti had much more to offer. Impressive thunderstorms. Endless plains with scattered trees and granite rocks (kopjes) where lions, leopards, cheetahs and hyenas are seen regularly. Sometimes hunting, chasing and killing prey on close distance. But most in rest during daytime.
Travelling back to our final destination Zanzibar a stop was made in the 2-3 million years old, 600 meters deep and 260 km2 covering Ngorongoro Crater where many non-migrating animals can be seen in an unique ecological system.
In Zanzibar the Jozani National Park is the place where red Colobus monkeys can be spotted. This animal is highly endangerd. Only about 2500 of these monkeys remain in the wild.
Around Zanzibar there are nice places for snorkeling, diving and swimming with dolphins.

In the wilds of Africa, food and water come and go with the seasons, and animals follow. The Serengeti is the site of what most consider the most dramatic migration, with giant herds of millions of animals—some 750,000 zebras and 1.2 million wildebeests as well as gazelles and eland—traveling from the Ngorongoro area in southern Tanzania to the Masai Mara in lower Kenya and returning as the rains dictate.
But when it comes to the longest hike endpoint to endpoint, Africa has a new record holder. As reported in an article published online today in the journal Oryx, the migration, which has now been observed in consecutive years, isn't on the scale of what goes down on the Serengeti—it involves just a few thousand Burchell's zebras . But the animals cover more than 300 miles (500 kilometers) in a straight-line, up-and-back journey across Namibia and Botswana. (In the Serengeti the animals meander more before circling back, so their feet touch more ground, but the distance between the zebras' two destinations is greater.

Every year, birds, mammals, fish, reptiles and other animals around the world migrate for various reasons. How they know when and where to go? Although seasons and temperatures seem to be the most important factor, the whole mechanism is not yet clearly understood. Migration yields things not usually seen - tree branches bending from the weight of butterflies, birds, flying from Alaska to New Zealand without stopping. Also animals don't always just travel across the map, either - some fish migrate to different depths!

Animal migration is the relatively long-distance movement of individuals, usually on a seasonal basis. It is a ubiquitous phenomenon, found in all major animal groups, including birds, mammals, fish, reptiles, amphibians, insects, and crustaceans. The trigger for the migration may be local climate, local availability of food, the season of the year or for mating reasons. To be counted as a true migration, and not just a local dispersal or irruption, the movement of the animals should be an annual or seasonal occurrence, such as birds migrating south for the winter, or a major habitat change as part of their life, such as young Atlantic salmon leaving the river of their birth when they have reached a few inches in size.
Migration can take very different forms in different species and as such, there is no simple accepted definition of migration. One of the most commonly used definitions, proposed by Kennedy is
“Migratory behavior is persistent and straightened out movement effected by the animal’s own locomotory exertions or by its active embarkation upon a vehicle. Millions of these gnus join forces annually to participate in one huge migration - always with luscious grass in their sights. Roaring, snorting, bucking, continuously reproductive en route, they head west - across the Serengeti from Tanzania to Kenya and back. With a large variety of animals in their wake - friend and foe: zebra families that resemble pale flotsam in a dark ocean amidst the gnu herds; or lions, and hyaenas in hope of their next victims. Along their way, they encounter hippopotami and crocodiles - and all of them embroiled in the cycle of "devour and be devoured". The filmmakers follow the artiodactyls, armed with their cameras and lay in wait on the so-called "birthing meadow". There, in the world's largest maternity room, 250.000 calves will be born within the next three weeks. The journey from there to the pasture regions of Kenya is especially dangerous for young animals - and here the film also illustrates nature's harshness. And then there is the "revenge of the gnus", something that Vita and Rolf Köster have become acquainted with. The two filmmakers gained unusual access to the world's most famous game reserve whilst shooting their film in search of the even-toed animals.

In december 2013 we made a safari to Lake Manyara, the Central Serengeti and Ndutu in the southern part of the Serengeti.
The main reason for this journey was to experience a part of the Great Migration of the Gnu or Wildebeest, Zebra and Gazelles.
The Serengeti did not disappoint us.
After many months of drought the first rains began to fall when we arrived early december. The Serengeti plains changed color within a week from dry yellow to fresh green.
These slowly from north to south moving rains, made the herds of Wildebeest leave the woodlands and crossing rivers, to the fresh pastures in the south (Ndutu) where they will give birth to their calves in February. About 350.000 animals are born within only a couple of days. This also means that the same number of animals die during their yearly migration.
During our 6 nights stay in this area we experienced only a small part of this great event that never stops, also known as 'the greatest show on earth'.
Out of about 1.5 million Gnus we saw some tens of thousands migrating animals.
And the Serengeti had much more to offer. Impressive thunderstorms. Endless plains with scattered trees and granite rocks (kopjes) where lions, leopards, cheetahs and hyenas are seen regularly. Sometimes hunting, chasing and killing prey on close distance. But most in rest during daytime.
Travelling back to our final destination Zanzibar a stop was made in the 2-3 million years old, 600 meters deep and 260 km2 covering Ngorongoro Crater where many non-migrating animals can be seen in an unique ecological system.
In Zanzibar the Jozani National Park is the place where red Colobus monkeys can be spotted. This animal is highly endangerd. Only about 2500 of these monkeys remain in the wild.
Around Zanzibar there are nice places for snorkeling, diving and swimming with dolphins.

Migration yields things not usually seen - tree branches bending from the weight of butterflies, birds, flying from Alaska to New Zealand without stopping. Also animals don't always just travel across the map, either - some fish migrate to different depths!
