for the past 26 years 16 expeditions have tried and failed to climb one of pakistan's 8,000 meter peaks in winter.
on february 2, 2011, simone moro, denis urubko and cory richards became the first. cory is now the only american to summit any 8,000 meter peak in winter.
the journey nearly killed them. cory carried a small camera and filmed the ordeal constantly.
this is their story, as seen from the raw, honest perspective of cory's lens.

Calvaire (film)
Calvaire (also known as The Ordeal) is a 2004 Belgian psychological horror film directed by Fabrice Du Welz, starring Laurent Lucas, Philippe Nahon and Jackie Berroyer.
Plot
Marc Stevens is a struggling low-level performer, who makes his living performing light pop ballads and easy listening tunes at retirement homes and other small venues around Belgium. En route to perform at a Christmas special, his van — which doubles as his home — breaks down during a storm and he is stranded deep in the woods. Lost, cold, and succumbing to the elements, Marc is rescued by a local, an emaciated young man named Boris, who takes Marc to a run down inn.
The sole occupant of the inn is its proprietor, Mr. Bartel, an amiable old man who lives there as a hermit of sorts. Claiming to be a retired standup comedian, Bartel welcomes Marc to stay and offers to repair his van as a token of brotherhood between professional entertainers. Marc accepts the offer, but remains aloof, not speaking with Bartel about his own career or personal life.

I wanted to do something special for my 20,000th tweet. After all, 20,000 updates on my sanity is more than anyone should have to put up with, so I reckoned you lot deserved something a little more interesting! Unfortunately, I am, if nothing else, devoid of creative talent, so this was a massive struggle, both in conception, and execution. Still, at the end of the day, I think it's a bit of fun... -

My week's output for the Visualist Master Class at Eyebeam NY, July 19th-23rd. This piece was written in C++ and is fully interactive. The basis of the course was to create a visual accompaniment to a song off the Ghostly International label. Choosing The Sight Below's 'Simmer' I decided to recreate Hemmingway's The Old Man and the Sea as a serious of 3D dioramas. In the novella, the protagonist has lost his pride and respect within the community because he has not caught a fish for 86 days. On the 87th day, a giant Marlin appears who he battles to catch. After a long struggle where he refers to the Marlin as 'brother,' he finally subdues the fish and brings him aboard. On the way back to land, the fisherman has to fight off numerous sharks who are attracted by the trail of blood in the water. Eventually, the fisherman returns to land with just the massive bones left. The ordeal can be read as the man's fight for his sense of self and purpose with the Marlin the physical representation. My interest lay in the use of polygon reduction as a storytelling tool. 3D graphics models are made up of a series of points (vertices) that are 'skinned' to create models. The more points, the smoother and more detailed the model. Could reducing/increasing the number of points on a model be used to drive a story forward or create a emotional response? Throughout the piece the character's emotional state is represented by both the polygon count and distortion of the water. Hopefully a first experiment of many.

octopus steals my video camera and swims off with it (while it's Recording)
while trying to get video of a wild octopus, it suddenly dashes towards me and rips my shiny new camera from out of my hands, then swims off, all while the camera is recording! he swam away very quickly like a naughty shoplifter. after a 5 minute chase, I placed my speargun underneath him and he quickly and curiously grabbed hold of the gun as well, giving me enough time to reach in and grab the camera from out of his mouth. My week's output for the Visualist Master Class at Eyebeam NY, July 19th-23rd. This piece was written in C++ and is fully interactive.
The basis of the course was to create a visual accompaniment to a song off the Ghostly International label. Choosing The Sight Below's 'Simmer' I decided to recreate Hemmingway's The Old Man and the Sea as a serious of 3D dioramas.
In the novella, the protagonist has lost his pride and respect within the community because he has not caught a fish for 86 days. On the 87th day, a giant Marlin appears who he battles to catch. After a long struggle where he refers to the Marlin as 'brother,' he finally subdues the fish and brings him aboard. On the way back to land, the fisherman has to fight off numerous sharks who are attracted by the trail of blood in the water. Eventually, the fisherman returns to land with just the massive bones left. The ordeal can be read as the man's fight for his sense of self and purpose with the Marlin the physical representation.
My interest lay in the use of polygon reduction as a storytelling tool. 3D graphics models are made up of a series of points (vertices) that are 'skinned' to create models. The more points, the smoother and more detailed the model. Could reducing/increasing the number of points on a model be used to drive a story forward or create a emotional response? Throughout the piece the character's emotional state is represented by both the polygon count and distortion of the water.
Hopefully a first experiment of many.

In 1978, You Are Not Alone (Du Er Ikke Alene) dared to venture into the realm of male pre- and post-pubescent attitudes. Unafraid to depict teen boys in their swirling state of uncertainty, both physically and mentally, the picture aims its sights squarely upon the controlling adults who don't always offer what's best for these youngsters and often add to the angst and confusion. Through the ordeal, youngsters often are left to brood over the thought that theirs might be a solitary situation.
At its core, You Are Not Alone is a coming-of-age picture that isn't rooted in the usual sexual context as so many pinch-and-giggle excursions have been. Rather, it takes a much more sensitive and sympathetic view into the lives of the youth of the day (sure, it is set in Denmark but the emotions and angst examined could apply nearly anywhere). It would be a stretch to label this as a "queer" film. If anything, the film is significantly politically motivated, harkening a recall to the 1960s when young people questioned their lack of impact on public policy and moral standards.

If anything, the film is significantly politically motivated, harkening a recall to the 1960s when young people questioned their lack of impact on public policy and moral standards.

while trying to get video of a wild octopus, it suddenly dashes towards me and rips my shiny new camera from out of my hands, then swims off, all while the camera is recording! he swam away very quickly like a naughty shoplifter. after a 5 minute chase, I placed my speargun underneath him and he quickly and curiously grabbed hold of the gun as well, giving me enough time to reach in and grab the camera from out of his mouth. I didn't feel threatened at all during the whole ordeal. he seemed to be fixated on the shiny metallic blue digital camera. the only confusing behavior was how he dashed off with it like a thief haha. cheeky octopus.

My week's output for the Visualist Master Class at Eyebeam NY, July 19th-23rd. This piece was written in C++ and is fully interactive. The basis of the course was to create a visual accompaniment to a song off the Ghostly International label. Choosing The Sight Below's 'Simmer' I decided to recreate Hemmingway's The Old Man and the Sea as a serious of 3D dioramas. In the novella, the protagonist has lost his pride and respect within the community because he has not caught a fish for 86 days. On the 87th day, a giant Marlin appears who he battles to catch. After a long struggle where he refers to the Marlin as 'brother,' he finally subdues the fish and brings him aboard. On the way back to land, the fisherman has to fight off numerous sharks who are attracted by the trail of blood in the ...

My week's output for the Visualist Master Class at Eyebeam NY, July 19th-23rd. This piece was written in C++ and is fully interactive.
The basis of the course was to create a visual accompaniment to a song off the Ghostly International label. Choosing The Sight Below's 'Simmer' I decided to recreate Hemmingway's The Old Man and the Sea as a serious of 3D dioramas.
In the novella, the protagonist has lost his pride and respect within the community because he has not caught a fish for 86 days. On the 87th day, a giant Marlin appears who he battles to catch. After a long struggle where he refers to the Marlin as 'brother,' he finally subdues the fish and brings him aboard. On the way back to land, the fisherman has to fight off numerous sharks who are attracted by the trail of blood in the water. Eventually, the fisherman returns to land with just the massive bones left. The ordeal can be read as the man's fight for his sense of self and purpose with the Marlin the physical representation.
My interest lay in the use of polygon reduction as a storytelling tool. 3D graphics models are made up of a series of points (vertices) that are 'skinned' to create models. The more points, the smoother and more detailed the model. Could reducing/increasing the number of points on a model be used to drive a story forward or create a emotional response? Throughout the piece the character's emotional state is represented by both the polygon count and distortion of the water.
Hopefully a first experiment of many.

In 1978, You Are Not Alone (Du Er Ikke Alene) dared to venture into the realm of male pre- and post-pubescent attitudes. Unafraid to depict teen boys in their swirling state of uncertainty, both physically and mentally, the picture aims its sights squarely upon the controlling adults who don't always offer what's best for these youngsters and often add to the angst and confusion. Through the ordeal, youngsters often are left to brood over the thought that theirs might be a solitary situation.
At its core, You Are Not Alone is a coming-of-age picture that isn't rooted in the usual sexual context as so many pinch-and-giggle excursions have been. Rather, it takes a much more sensitive and sympathetic view into the lives of the youth of the day (sure, it is set in Denmark but the emotions and angst examined could apply nearly anywhere). It would be a stretch to label this as a "queer" film. If anything, the film is significantly politically motivated, harkening a recall to the 1960s when young people questioned their lack of impact on public policy and moral standards.

I didn't feel threatened at all during the whole ordeal. he seemed to be fixated on the shiny metallic blue digital camera. the only confusing behavior was how he dashed off with it like a thief haha. cheeky octopus.
