Selling England by the Pound is the fifth studio album from the English progressive rock band Genesis, released in October 1973 on Charisma Records. It reached number 3 in the UK and number 70 in the U.S. A single from the album, "I Know What I Like (In Your Wardrobe)" was released in February 1974 and became the band's first top 30 hit in the UK.
The album was recorded in August 1973 following the tour supporting the previous album, Foxtrot. The group set aside a short period of time to write new material, which covered a number of themes, including the loss of English folk culture and an increased American influence, which was reflected in the title. Following the album's release, the group set out on tour, where they drew an enthusiastic reception from fans.
Critics and the band have given mixed opinions of the album, though guitarist Steve Hackett has said it is his favourite Genesis record. The album has continued to sell and has reached Gold certification by the British Phonographic Industry and the Recording Industry Association of America. It was remastered for CD in 1994 and 2007. Several of the album tracks became fan favourites and featured as a regular part of the band's live setlist into the 1980s.
Peter Brian Gabriel (born 13 February 1950) is an English singer-songwriter, musician and humanitarian activist who rose to fame as the original lead singer and flautist of the progressive rock band Genesis. After leaving Genesis in 1975, Gabriel went on to a successful solo career, with "Solsbury Hill" his first single. His 1986 album, So, is his most commercially successful, and is certified triple platinum in the UK and five times platinum in the U.S. The album's biggest hit, "Sledgehammer", won a record nine MTV Awards at the 1987 MTV Video Music Awards, and it remains the most played music video in the history of MTV.
Gabriel has been a champion of world music for much of his career. He co-founded the WOMAD festival in 1982. He has continued to focus on producing and promoting world music through his Real World Records label. He has also pioneered digital distribution methods for music, co-founding OD2, one of the first online music download services. Gabriel has been involved in numerous humanitarian efforts. In 1980, he released the anti-apartheid single "Biko". He has participated in several human rights benefit concerts, including Amnesty International's Human Rights Now! tour in 1988, and co-founded the WITNESS human rights organisation in 1992. Gabriel developed The Elders with Richard Branson, which was launched by Nelson Mandela in 2007.
"The Carpet Crawlers", also sometimes listed as "Carpet Crawl", "The Carpet Crawl" or "Carpet Crawlers", is a song originally from the 1974 Genesis concept album The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway. The song was re-recorded in 1999 with the name "The Carpet Crawlers 1999".
In this portion of The Lamb story, the main character Rael finds himself in a red carpeted corridor, filled with kneeling people that are slowly crawling towards a wooden door at the end of the hall. Rael dashes by them towards the door and goes through it. Behind the door is a table with a candlelit feast on it, and behind that, a spiral staircase that leads upwards out of sight.
Though credited to the whole band, Peter Gabriel wrote most of the song, both music and lyrics. This was unlike the rest of the album, where most of the other songs the music was written by the other members of Genesis with Gabriel focusing on lyrics.
It was Genesis' last single to feature lead vocalist Peter Gabriel for 25 years. The 1999 rerecorded version also featured Peter Gabriel's singing making it his last appearance on a Genesis record to date, as well as the last recorded song by any iteration of Genesis.
Stephen Richard "Steve" Hackett (born 12 February 1950) is an English guitarist, musician, songwriter and singer. He gained prominence as lead guitarist of the English progressive rock band Genesis, which he joined in 1970 and left in 1977 to pursue a solo career. Hackett contributed to six Genesis studio albums, three live albums and seven singles. Hackett was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Genesis in 2010.
Hackett released his first solo album, Voyage of the Acolyte, while still a member of Genesis in 1975. After a series of further solo albums beginning in 1978, Hackett co-founded the supergroup GTR with another progressive guitarist, Steve Howe of Yes and Asia, in 1986. The group released the self-titled album GTR, which peaked at No. 11 on the Billboard 200 in the United States and spawned the Top 20 single "When the Heart Rules the Mind". When Hackett left GTR in 1987, the group disbanded. Hackett then resumed his solo career. He has released albums and toured worldwide on a regular basis since.
In everyday speech, a phrase may be any group of words, often carrying a special idiomatic meaning; in this sense it is roughly synonymous with expression. In linguistic analysis, a phrase is a group of words (or possibly a single word) that functions as a constituent in the syntax of a sentence—a single unit within a grammatical hierarchy. A phrase appears within a clause, although it is also possible for a phrase to be a clause or to contain a clause within it.
There is a difference between the common use of the term phrase and its technical use in linguistics. In common usage, a phrase is usually a group of words with some special idiomatic meaning or other significance, such as "all rights reserved", "economical with the truth", "kick the bucket", and the like. It may be a euphemism, a saying or proverb, a fixed expression, a figure of speech, etc.
In grammatical analysis, particularly in theories of syntax, a phrase is any group of words, or sometimes a single word, which plays a particular role within the grammatical structure of a sentence. It does not have to have any special meaning or significance, or even exist anywhere outside of the sentence being analyzed, but it must function there as a complete grammatical unit. For example, in the sentence Yesterday I saw an orange bird with a white neck, the words an orange bird with a white neck form what is called a noun phrase, or a determiner phrase in some theories, which functions as the object of the sentence.

Audio remastered by me - I've found many videos with this song live, but each had really terrible sound. I couldn't find a video from this concert with good audio, so I did my best to remaster it and I hope that you will enjoy it too. Shepperton Studios - 1973 - Selling England by the Pound - Dancing with the Moonlit Knight. I think that Selling England by the Pound was their best album. I love Genesis with Peter Gabriel
Con este tema da comienzo el mejor álbum de Genesis (en mi humilde opinión) os hablo del mítico "Selling England By The Pound", aquí os dejo esta versión en directo con la formación que compuso dicho álbum. Peter Gabriel y Steve Hackett son muy muy grandes!!!!
For the first time in 34 years, Peter Gabriel performs a Genesis song live.. taken from Sting & Peter Gabriel on their Rock, Paper, Scissors Tour at Rexall Place in Edmonton July 24 2016. Original video by Ryley Bauer (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KGLTKBpt_wo)
This is Dancing with the moonlit knight composed by Genesis in 1973 in the album Selling Englang By The Pound followed by The Carpet Crawlers composed by Genesis in 1974 in the album The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway. At this this the group members were Peter Gabriel (Lead vocals), Tony Banks (Keyboard), Mike Rutherford (Bass and guitar), Steve Hacket (Guitar) and Phil Collins (Drums and back vocals). In 1980, Peter Gabriel and Steve Hackett had left the group, leaving only three of them : Tony Banks, Mike Rutherford and Phil Collins. In live performances, they kept playing parts of there old songs, but this medley (Dancing with the moonlit knight/Carpet Crawlers) was pretty rare. I hope you'll enjoy it, thanks for listening! It's 1973, Steve Hackett is using some tapping and sweeping guitar techniques while shredders sleep gently in their cradles :^D This video is mainly for instructional and historical purposes (and to show the cool T-shirt of course) . Steve throws some effects here and there that are missing on this video. I don't have pedal effects for the guitar whatsoever, the only special thing I can get from the amp is distortion so I have to either play with distortion or play clean all the way through.

"Can you tell me where my country lies?"
said the unifaun to his true love's eyes.
"It lies with me!" cried the Queen of Maybe
- for her merchandise, he traded in his prize.
"Paper late!" cried a voice in the crowd.
"Old man dies!" The note he left was signed 'Old Father Thames'
- it seems he's drowned;
selling england by the pound.
Citizens of Hope & Glory,
Time goes by - it's the 'time of your life'.
Easy now, sit you down.
Chewing through your Wimpey dreams,
they eat without a sound;
digesting england by the pound.
Young man says 'you are what you eat' - eat well.
Old man says 'you are what you wear' - wear well.
You know what you are, you don't give a damn;
bursting your belt that is your homemade sham.
The Captain leads his dance right on through the night
- join the dance ....
Follow on! Till the Grail sun sets in the mould.
Follow on! Till the gold is cold.
Dancing out with the moonlit knight,
Knights of the Green Shield stamp and shout.
There's a fat old lady outside the saloon;
laying out the credit she plays Fortune.
The deck is uneven right from the start;
all of their hands are playing apart.
The Captain leads his dance right on through the night
- join the dance ....
Follow on! A Round Table-talking down we go.
You're the show!
Off we go with: - You play the hobbyhorse,
I'll play the fool.
We'll tease the bull
ringing round & loud, loud & round.
Follow on! With a twist of the world we go.
Follow on! Till the gold is cold.
Dancing out with the moonlit knight,
Knights of the Green Shield stamp and shout.
