It's been over a month since Thailand's army overthrew the country's elected government in a coup d'etat. In that short time, the new ruling junta has secured almost total control over the country and succeeded in silencing most of its critics.
Thailand has quickly come to resemble a police state, as hundreds of people have been detained, "invited to talk," or "given time to meditate," as the junta puts it. Most are released after a week — at which point they have signed a document indicating their promise not to oppose the coup, or face years in jail. Others have been sent to military courts for judgment, where no appeal is allowed.
Authorities have offered cash rewards for anyone who can bring them a photo of their fellow citizens taking part in anti-coup activities. Hand salutes, eating sandwiches, and reading controversial books in public are now illegal if they are considered to be motivated by anti-coup sentiments, and the media continues to be heavily censored.
The junta says 90 percent of Thais support the coup — which is a questionable number, having come from their own surveys. But there is no doubt that many citizens do support the coup, and feel that only the junta is able to eradicate corruption, stop crime, and keep the peace.
VICE News spent the past few weeks with two young Bangkokians who hold different perspectives on their country's shifting politics. One is a pro-coup supporter who believes the army's move was necessary to restore order. The other is a young student activist bent on having his voice heard, even under the threat of detention.

But today's Supreme Court is apparently fine with letting the military lock up American citizens and detain them for indefinite amounts of time. Whatever happened to our Constitutional rights?

It gives the military junta complete control over the administrative, executive and judicial branches of the government, in effect making them more powerful than they already were. Bruce Harrison joins me in the studio with more on Myanmar's shift to democracy.
Bruce, how did the transition of power play out?
Connyoung, today's handover ceremony was peaceful and emotional. New president Htin Kyaw shook hands with outgoing President Thein Sein,... and members of the new government were present... as well the head of Myanmar's army, a sign of good faith from the military.
Bruce, the democracy Aung Sun Suu Kyi envisions... is still a ways off. What's the main hold up... despite her party's majority in parliament and her confidant how president?
Myanmar's military-written constitution is the main potential roadblock to a lot of reforms.
It's the reason Aung isn't the new president, because it blocks anyone from top political office is their children hold foreign passports.
The military also retains control over three ministries and 25 percent of seats in parliament -- giving it veto power.
Still, it appears one of President Kyaw's first moves will be to implement his party's democratic constitution.
"I have a duty to amend this constitution so that it becomes a constitution that suits our country and matches democratic values."
Now, how the new government plans to realize that constitution is unclear. A campaign manager for an NLD party lawmaker told the New Yorker around the time of the election that once in parliament... the party hopes to bargain with the military to change the constitution.
He said some options to sway the military may include promising not to seek revenge against it... and persuading the military it could modernize faster under civilian rule.

Military dictatorship
A military dictatorship is a form of government in which a member of the military holds authoritarian control. In a junta, power is shared by several military leaders. It may be different from civilian dictatorship in a number of aspects: their motivations for seizing power, the institutions through which they organize their rule, and the ways in which they leave power. Often viewing itself as saving the nation from corrupt or myopic civilian politicians or from civil disorder, a military dictatorship justifies its position as "neutral" arbiters on the basis of their membership within the armed forces. For example, many juntas adopt titles, such as "National Redemption Council", "Committee of National Restoration", or "National Liberation Committee".
Civil-military dictatorship
The concept of civil military dictatorship was coined to describe the nature of the Uruguayan dictatorship (1973–85) (Spanish: Dictadura cívico-militar).
Historians Gabriel Salazar and Julio Pinto have stressed the hybrid nature of the Chilean military dictatorship (1973–90) and previous and later apparently non-military governments claiming that there is a continuation of civil and military cooperation that excludes the population from meaningful participation in the state affairs calling this a de facto civil-military dictatorship.

Thailand’s military junta now controls the entire government
The Prime Minister of Thailand recently made the announcement that martial law has been lifted. The military has been under pressure from the international community to lift the imposition and return Thailand to a democratic government, but in its place the military instated, “Clause 44”. It gives the military junta complete control over the administrative, executive and judicial branches of the government, in effect making them more powerful than they already were. It's been over a month since Thailand's army overthrew the country's elected government in a coup d'etat. In that short time, the new ruling junta has secured almost total control over the country and succeeded in silencing most of its critics.
Thailand has quickly come to resemble a police state, as hundreds of people have been detained, "invited to talk," or "given time to meditate," as the junta puts it. Most are released after a week — at which point they have signed a document indicating their promise not to oppose the coup, or face years in jail. Others have been sent to military courts for judgment, where no appeal is allowed.
Authorities have offered cash rewards for anyone who can bring them a photo of their fellow citizens taking part in anti-coup activities. Hand salutes, eating sandwiches, and reading controversial books in public are now illegal if they are considered to be motivated by anti-coup sentiments, and the media continues to be heavily censored.
The junta says 90 percent of Thais support the coup — which is a questionable number, having come from their own surveys. But there is no doubt that many citizens do support the coup, and feel that only the junta is able to eradicate corruption, stop crime, and keep the peace.
VICE News spent the past few weeks with two young Bangkokians who hold different perspectives on their country's shifting politics. One is a pro-coup supporter who believes the army's move was necessary to restore order. The other is a young student activist bent on having his voice heard, even under the threat of detention.

Bruce Harrison joins me in the studio with more on Myanmar's shift to democracy.
Bruce, how did the transition of power play out?
Connyoung, today's handover ceremony was peaceful and emotional. New president Htin Kyaw shook hands with outgoing President Thein Sein,... and members of the new government were present... as well the head of Myanmar's army, a sign of good faith from the military.
Bruce, the democracy Aung Sun Suu Kyi envisions... is still a ways off. What's the main hold up... despite her party's majority in parliament and her confidant how president?
Myanmar's military-written constitution is the main potential roadblock to a lot of reforms.
It's the reason Aung isn't the new president, because it blocks anyone from top political office is their children hold foreign passports.
The military also retains control over three ministries and 25 percent of seats in parliament -- giving it veto power.
Still, it appears one of President Kyaw's first moves will be to implement his party's democratic constitution.
"I have a duty to amend this constitution so that it becomes a constitution that suits our country and matches democratic values."
Now, how the new government plans to realize that constitution is unclear. A campaign manager for an NLD party lawmaker told the New Yorker around the time of the election that once in parliament... the party hopes to bargain with the military to change the constitution.
He said some options to sway the military may include promising not to seek revenge against it... and persuading the military it could modernize faster under civilian rule.

Thailand's Military Junta To Expand Powers
(CNN)Thai voters have approved a new draft constitution, the country's election commission said. With 94% of ballots counted, 61.4% voted in favor and 38.6% voted against the draft constitution, which could give extra powers to the military. The referendum Sunday also asked Thais to vote on whether to allow the country's Senate to jointly vote for prime minister along with the House of Representatives. (CNN)Thai voters have approved a new draft constitution, the country's election commission said. With 94% of ballots counted, 61.4% voted in favor and 38.6% voted against the draft constitution, which could give extra powers to the military. The referendum Sunday also asked Thais to vote on whether to allow the country's Senate to jointly vote for prime minister along with the House of Representatives. About 58% voted to allow the Senate to jointly vote for the prime minister, while almost 42% rejected it, according to the Thai Election Commission.

Thailand is holding a referendum on a new constitution backed by the current military government. The document, if passed, would require the continuation of military rule.
The draft of what would be Thailand's 20th constitution... provides for a Senate fully appointed by the military, which could overrule the decisions of elected lawmakers.

Tropico 4 Junta Military DLC Gameplay. A Military City Building Game. Tropico 4 one of the Best City Building Games! 2016 PC City Building done Military! ElPresidente needs to crush Tropico's rebel threat, and build a thriving island city - at the same time!
Junta has a strong military focus and in this video we get the island of Tropico military ready! A weapons factory become operational, but can we hold on to it or will the rebel army blast it to the ground?
We also found our island community and focus on resource harvesting to increase the budget and keep the people happy.
This is my first Tropico 4 DLC let's play of the New Sparta mission. Tropico is a city building strategy and simulation game. We're going to cover all the DLC missions. I plan to do the same for Tropic 5 in the future.

I've been loving Stellaris so far, it's definitely a fantastic game (needs a little work) but I'm sure the upcoming patches will be fantastic and fix a lot of issues.

It was clear minutes after Egypt Military ruler, Field Marshall HussainTantawi made his speech following 4 days of brutal force by security forces against protestors, that the concessions offered were simply not enough for protestors who were in the square and witnessed the violence and blood shed.
In his speech Tantawi said that the army is comitted to handing over power to civillians and that that an investigation in the violence will be conducted.
Protestors say demands are clear, they want to see power transferred to a civilian authority and they want it now. Despite several truce agreements being reached between protestors and security forces, as violence broke out again in the square no one seemed surprised.
The last truce reached was brokered by Azhar Sheikhs. One of these Sheikhs was seriously injured less than hour after reaching the agreement.
These events intensified the sense of defiance in protestors who vowed to keep on their protest in the square till the Military council hands over power.
Currently a sit in of thousands is being held in Tahrir square.
This is not a typical Tahrir sit in. Clashes contiue in the streets meters away. Here is where the injured are aided, as well this is a central collection stationfor medical and food supplies.
Protestors in Tahrir are currently relying on social networking websites to organize much of the logistics needed in the square.
Central stations have been set up around Cairo where medical aids and other supplies are collected and then taken to Tahrir.
Several field hospital have also been set up around the the Square, all of which are operated by volunteer doctors who have been treating the wounds from semi-rubber bullets and at times live ammunition.
Tanatawi had announced during his speech that the presidential elections would be held at mid 2012 instead of what had been announced earlier by the military council which placed the vote well into 2013.
However, protestors in Tahrir square say that after leaving more than 35 casulties, the military simply can not be trusted and nothing less than a full transfer to a civilian government will diffuse the situation.

It was clear minutes after Egypt Military ruler, Field Marshall HussainTantawi made his speech following 4 days of brutal force by security forces against protestors, that the concessions offered were simply not enough for protestors who were in the square and witnessed the violence and blood shed.
In his speech Tantawi said that the army is comitted to handing over power to civillians and that that an investigation in the violence will be conducted.
Protestors say demands are clear, they want to see power transferred to a civilian authority and they want it now. Despite several truce agreements being reached between protestors and security forces, as violence broke out again in the square no one seemed surprised.
The last truce reached was brokered by Azhar Sheikhs. One of these Sheikhs was seriously injured less than hour after reaching the agreement.
These events intensified the sense of defiance in protestors who vowed to keep on their protest in the square till the Military council hands over power.
Currently a sit in of thousands is being held in Tahrir square.
This is not a typical Tahrir sit in. Clashes contiue in the streets meters away. Here is where the injured are aided, as well this is a central collection stationfor medical and food supplies.
Protestors in Tahrir are currently relying on social networking websites to organize much of the logistics needed in the square.
Central stations have been set up around Cairo where medical aids and other supplies are collected and then taken to Tahrir.
Several field hospital have also been set up around the the Square, all of which are operated by volunteer doctors who have been treating the wounds from semi-rubber bullets and at times live ammunition.
Tanatawi had announced during his speech that the presidential elections would be held at mid 2012 instead of what had been announced earlier by the military council which placed the vote well into 2013.
However, protestors in Tahrir square say that after leaving more than 35 casulties, the military simply can not be trusted and nothing less than a full transfer to a civilian government will diffuse the situation.
