Military deception refers to attempts to mislead enemy forces during warfare. This is usually achieved by creating or amplifying an artificial fog of war via psychological operations, information warfare, visual deception and other methods. As a form of strategic use of information (disinformation), it overlaps with psychological warfare. To the degree that any enemy that falls for the deception will lose confidence when it is revealed, he may hesitate when confronted with the truth.

Deception in warfare dates back to early history. The Art of War puts great emphasis on the tactic. In modern times military deception has developed as a fully fledged theorem. Misinformation and visual deception were employed during World War I and came into even greater prominence during World War II. In the build up to the 1943 invasion of Normandy the Allies executed one of the largest deceptions in military history, Operation Neptune, helping them achieve full tactical surprise.

Broadly, military deception can take both strategic and tactical form. Deception across a strategic battlefield was uncommon until the modern age (particularly in the world wars of the 20th century), but tactical deception (on individual battlefields) dates back to early history. In a practical sense military deception employs visual misdirection, misinformation (for example, via double agents) and psychology to make the enemy believe something that is untrue. When referring to deception in the military doctrines of the Soviet Union and Russia, the Russian loanword maskirovka (literally: camouflage, concealment) is sometimes used.

Larry King (born November 19, 1933) is an American television and radio host whose work has been recognized with awards including two Peabodys and ten Cable ACE Awards. He began as a local Florida journalist and radio interviewer in the 1950s and 1960s and became prominent as an all-night national radio broadcaster starting in 1978. From 1985-2010, he hosted the nightly interview TV program Larry King Live on CNN.

King was born Lawrence Harvey Zeiger in Brooklyn, New York City, to an Austrian immigrant Edward Zeiger, a restaurant owner and defense plant worker, and his wife Jennie Gitlitz, a garment worker, who emigrated from Belarus. King grew up in a religiously observant Jewish home, but in adulthood became an agnostic.

King's father died at 44 of heart disease, and his mother had to go on welfare to support her two sons. His father's death greatly affected King, and he lost interest in school. After graduating from high school, he worked to help support his mother. From an early age, however, he had wanted to go into radio. King is a fan of the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Nicholas Rankin (born 1950) is a British writer and broadcaster.

Rankin was born in Yorkshire, England but grew up in Kenya. He was educated at Shrewsbury School and Christ Church, Oxford. He has lived and worked in Bolivia and Catalonia, Spain.

He worked for the BBC World Service for 20 years. He was Chief Producer, Arts, at the BBC World Service, when his eight-part series on ecology and evolution, A Green History of the Planet, won two UN awards.

He currently works as a freelance writer and broadcaster and lives in London with his wife, the novelist Maggie Gee, and their daughter Rosa.

He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature in 2009.

Ken O'Keefe (born August 18, 1953) is an American football coach and former player. He is currently a wide receivers coach for the Miami Dolphins of the National Football League (NFL), a position he assumed in February 2012. O'Keefe has previously served as the offensive coordinator for the Iowa Hawkeyes football team from 1999 to 2011. He was the head football coach at the Allegheny College from 1990 to 1997 and at Fordham University in 1998, compiling a career college football record of 83–17–1. In O'Keefe's first season at Allegheny, in 1990, his team went 13–0–1 and won the NCAA Division III National Football Championship.

On February 3, 2012, O'Keefe resigned from the Iowa program to take a job with the Miami Dolphins of the National Football League (NFL). New Dolphins head coach Joe Philbin spent several years on Iowa's staff, coaching the offensive line from 1999 to 2002.

Brigadier Dudley Wrangel Clarke, CBE, CB (27 April 1899 – 7 May 1974) was an officer in the British Army, known as a pioneer of military deception operations during the Second World War. A theatrical and charismatic individual, Clarke could "charm senior officers brilliantly, but he also got things done". His ideas for combining fictional orders of battle, visual deception and double agents helped define Allied deception strategy during the war. Clarke was also instrumental in the founding of three famous military units; the British Commandos, the Special Air Service and the U.S. Rangers.

Born in Johannesburg under the shadow of the Second Boer War, but brought up in London, Clarke became enamoured with the style and substance of the armed forces. As World War I dawned he joined the Royal Artillery as an officer. Unable to fight in France (due to an age limit) he transferred to the newly formed Royal Flying Corps and spent the rest of the war learning to fly; first in Reading and then Egypt. After the war, Clarke switched back to Artillery and had a varied career, often in the Middle East, involved in the small wars and rebellions of the period. In 1922, whilst technically on leave, he fed misinformation to Turkish rebels during the Chanak Crisis – his first taste of the sort of activities which would dominate his later military career. From then until 1936 he held a variety of posts.
