HIDDEN ERROR: Usage of "influences" is not recognized
Merry Clayton (born December 25, 1948) is an American soul and gospel singer and an actress. She provided a number of back-up vocal tracks for major performing artists in the 1960s, most notably in her duet with Mick Jagger on the Rolling Stones song "Gimme Shelter." Merry is featured in 20 Feet from Stardom, the Oscar-winning documentary about background singers and their contributions to the music industry. In 2013, she released The Best of Merry Clayton, a compilation of her favorite songs.
Clayton was born in Gert Town, New Orleans, Louisiana.
Clayton began her recording career in 1962 at the age of 14, singing "Who Can I Count On? (When I Can't Count on You)" as a duet with Bobby Darin on his album "You're the Reason I'm Living". In 1963 she recorded the first version of "The Shoop Shoop Song (It's in His Kiss)", the same year that Betty Everett's version reached the Top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100. Early in her career Merry performed with Ray Charles (as one of the Raelettes), Pearl Bailey, Phil Ochs, Burt Bacharach, Tom Jones, Joe Cocker, Linda Ronstadt, Carole King, and on several tracks from Neil Young's debut album. Clayton is often credited as having recorded with Elvis Presley but her name does not appear in Elvis sessionographies.
"Gimme Shelter" is a song by The Rolling Stones. It first appeared as the opening track on the band's 1969 album Let It Bleed. Although the first word was spelled "Gimmie" on that album, subsequent recordings by the band and other musicians have made "Gimme" the customary spelling. Greil Marcus, writing in Rolling Stone magazine at the time of its release, said of it, "The Stones have never done anything better."
The recording features Richards playing in his new open tuning; the guitar riff is widely considered to be among the most distinctive and recognizable in rock history.
The recording also features powerful female vocals by Merry Clayton, recorded at a last-minute late-night recording session during the mixing phase, arranged by her friend and record producer Jack Nitzsche.
"Gimme Shelter" was written by the Rolling Stones' lead vocalist Mick Jagger and guitarist Keith Richards, the band's primary songwriting team. Richards began working on the song's signature opening riff in London whilst Jagger was away filming Performance. As released, the song begins with Richards performing a guitar intro, soon joined by Jagger's harmonica and subsequent lead vocal. Of Let It Bleed's bleak world view, Jagger said in a 1995 interview with Rolling Stone:
The Rolling Stones are an English rock band formed in London in 1962. The first settled line-up consisted of Brian Jones (guitar, harmonica), Ian Stewart (piano), Mick Jagger (lead vocals, harmonica), Keith Richards (guitar), Bill Wyman (bass) and Charlie Watts (drums). Stewart was removed from the official line-up in 1963 but continued as an occasional pianist until his death in 1985. Jones departed the band less than a month prior to his death in 1969, having already been replaced by Mick Taylor, who remained until 1975. Subsequently, Ronnie Wood has been on guitar in tandem with Richards. Following Wyman's departure in 1993, Darryl Jones has been the main bassist. Other notable keyboardists for the band have included Nicky Hopkins, active from 1967 to 1982; Billy Preston through the mid 1970s (most prominent on Black and Blue) and Chuck Leavell, active since 1982. The band was first led by Jones but after teaming as the band's songwriters, Jagger and Richards assumed de facto leadership.
Dana Elaine Owens (born March 18, 1970), professionally known by her stage name Queen Latifah, is an American singer, songwriter, rapper, actress, model, television producer, record producer, comedienne, and talk show host. Born in Newark, New Jersey, she signed with Tommy Boy Records in 1989. In November 1989, she had released her debut album All Hail the Queen (1989), featuring the hit single "Ladies First" with Monie Love. Latifah released her second album Nature of a Sista (1991), which was her final album with Tommy Boy Records.
In 1993, Latifah starred as Khadijah James on the FOX sitcom Living Single, from 1993 to 1998. Her third album Black Reign (1993), which went gold by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) and peaked at number 60 on the Billboard 200 chart. The album also includes the hit single "U.N.I.T.Y." which won a Grammy Award for Best Rap Solo Performance in 1994 and hit the Billboard Hot 100. Latifah starred in the lead role of Set It Off (1996) as Cleopatra "Cleo" Sims, alongside Jada Pinkett-Smith. Between 1996 and 2000, controversy between Latifah and Foxy Brown received widespread media attention. She released her fourth album in 1998 Order in the Court (1998) with Motown Records. Queen Latifah gained mainstream success after appearing in Chicago (2002) as Matron "Mama" Morton and she received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress, losing to Catherine Zeta-Jones.

Clayton sang with such emotional force that her voice cracked. (“I was just grateful that the crack was in tune,” said Merry. You can hear the others in the studio shouting in amazement. Despite giving what would become the most famous performance of her career, it turned out to be a tragic night for Clayton. Shortly after leaving the studio, she lost her baby in a miscarriage.
Street Fighting Woman! Merry was the woman dueting with Mick on the Rolling Stones' original 1969 recording of "Gimme Shelter". Who better to interpret it the following year than Merry herself? She's accompanied on keys by her friend, the immeasurably important Billy Preston, who was as much the Sixth Stone as the Fifth Beatle in these years. The galloping roar of guitar may be David T. Walker, although the album credits don't clarify. She was born on Christmas Day, and what a gift! "War, children, is just a shot away/ See the fire is sweeping my very streets today..." Any resemblence between the events in this video and the present day is entirely up to you... The great Merry Clayton performing a soulful "Bridge Over Troubled Water" at the Big Sur Folk Festival in 1970, from the LP "Celebration". Hard to imagine a more powerful and emotional version of this song

The Who - 1972 Orchestral Tommy Rainbow Theatre, London, UK; December 9, 1972. (It’s more likely this was performed on December 13 or 14, 1972.) Fairly to good soundboard. Two performances spread over one night offered up a live rendering of the orchestral Tommy already rendered onto vinyl by producer Lou Reizner and a cast of thousands. And, it has to be said, the result was far more satisfying on stage than on record, as the album was partially recast to spotlight David Essex (who turns in a phenomenal “Amazing Journey”), Viv Stanshall (a terrifying Uncle Ernie) and more. Where it goes from there, however, depends upon how much one appreciates an orchestra and choir stepping in where the Who themselves had once roared so triumphantly - remember, it was less than two years since the ba...

Backup singers live in a world that lies just beyond the spotlight. Their voices bring harmony to the biggest bands in popular music, but we've had no idea these singers are or what lives they lead, until now. 20 Feet From Stardom is an Academy Award nominated documentary film directed by Morgan Neville, telling the stories of the background vocalists behind many rock and pop hits, from the Rolling Stones to Sting. Starring Darlene Love, Judith Hill, Merry Clayton, Lisa Fisher and Táta Vega among others, it celebrates the supremely talented artists whose contributions to popular music have generally gone unnoticed. We learn Darlene Love is credited with inventing contemporary backing singing, and as a member of the Blossoms sang on sessions for the Beach Boys and Elvis Presley. Merry Clayton provided the emotive vocals for the Rolling Stones's Gimme Shelter, and Táta Vega performed with Stevie Wonder and Michael Jackson. Sadly, many of their stories end in disillusionment with the business, whe...

Went to a party with my boyfriend
We were dancing to our favorite song
Then he turned off the lights and he walked away
Said he wouldn't be gone to long
I struck a match and there he was - kissing her
I struck a match and there he was - holding her
It took the match to catch him doing me wrong
Now it was dark and I couldn't see her face
But I saw her hittin' on my guy
A lot of the kids were dancing and having fun -
But I couldn't do a thing but cry
I struck a match and I saw him kissing her
I struck a match and I saw him holding her
It took a match to catch he was doing me wrong
I wiped away the tears and I turned my hands so no one could see
But, my girlfriend heard me crying, asked me
So, I said; ‘amen’ for me
The lights went on at the party
And my boyfriend came right to my side
He said he went for a soda
I said; ‘honey, I know you lied’
Cause I struck a match
And I saw you kissing her
I struck a match
And I saw you holding her
It took a match to catch
He was doing me wrong
(Instrumental break)
Cause I struck a match
And I saw you kissing her
I struck a match
And I saw you holding her
It took a match to catch
You were doing me wrong
(Fade out)
Doing me wrong
Doing me wrong
Yes, doing me wrong
