Filmed concurrently with an Off Broadway production, it was both co-produced and co-directed by actor Franchot Tone, who starred as Dr. Astroff. Tone's wife at the time, Delores Dorn-Heft, co-starred as Elena Andreevna, appearing in the only role not featuring an actor from the stage version in New York, where the part was played by Signe Hasso. The title role was played by George Voskovec.
Edited from Stark Young's translation of Chekhov's Russian text, the film runs 98 minutes. It was released on DVD in June, 2010.

Nearly 25 years since the Guthrie's last staging of what Irish Theatre Magazine has called "Chekhov's greatest play," Joe Dowling directs Chekhov's classic with a new adaptation by renowned Irish playwright Brian Friel. Vanya and his niece Sonya work their small country estate, living frugally and keeping their emotions tightly reined in. The return of Vanya's brother-in-law with his beautiful second wife Elena unlocks hidden passions as the entire family is turned upside down. Tea, wine and vodka fuel the tensions in this tragicomic story about unrequited love, thwarted ambition and enduring hope.
Uncle Vanya is a tragicomedy by the Russian playwright Anton Chekhov published in 1899. Directed by Stanley Spenger.
Laurence Olivier's production of Chekhov's Uncle Vanya performed by the Chichester Festival Theatre. Olivier's production of Chekhov's masterpiece is rightly famous. In addition to following Constance Garnet's beautiful translation of the play faithfully and staging the play carefully (albeit in a traditional fashion), Olivier, who plays Astrov (the Doctor, who, as in all Chekhov's plays, represents the playwright himself) assembled a stellar cast of actors: Joan Plowright is a perfect Sonia and Rosemary Harris a subtle Yelena. The older characters are filled out by some giants of the 20th century English stage, including Max Adrian, Lewis Casson, and Casson's wife, the magnificent Dame Sybil Thorndike as the Nurse. Topping the list, of course, is a fine performance by Michael Redgrave i...

Listen to the full audiobook: http://copydl.space/mabk/30/en/B003AYQ3DQ/book Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright David Mamets Uncle Vanya is a sparkling restoration of a masterpiece of the modern stage, marked by Mamets finely tuned ear for dialogue and memorable poetic imagery.in "uncle Vanya," a retired professor and his beautiful young wife return to the country estate left by his deceased first wife to find themselves overwhelmed by the stagnant inevitability of the rituals of their life and class, and mercilessly taxed by the encroachment of age at the expense of youth. All of the plays characters are plunged into that precarious state where, in Becketts words, the boredom of living is replaced by the suffering of being.
