Corniglia is a frazione ("fraction") of the commune of Vernazza in the province of La Spezia, Liguria, northern Italy. Unlike the other localities of the Cinque Terre, Corniglia is not directly adjacent to the sea. Instead, it is on the top of a promontory about 100 metres high, surrounded on three sides by vineyards and terraces and the fourth side descends steeply to the sea. To reach Corniglia, it is necessary to climb the Lardarina, a long brick flight of steps composed of 33 flights with 382 steps or, otherwise follow a vehicular road that, from the station, leads to the village. Sometimes a small bus runs up and down here.
The village stretches along the main road, Fieschi Road, and the houses have one side facing this road and the other facing the sea. Corniglia is characterised by narrow roads and a terrace obtained in the rock from which all other four Cinque Terre's villages, two on one side and two on the other, can be seen. The town planning structure presents also original characteristics compared to those of the other villages: the houses are lower set, and only more recently higher, similar to those of the villages of the hinterland.

Erika Mariniello conclude il suo tour alle Cinque Terre visitando Corniglia, particolare tra le altre in quanto non si trova proprio sul mare ma in posizione sopraelevata, tanto che bisogna fare oltre trecentocinquanta scalini per raggiungere il borgo dalla stazione.
Questo non significa che non si possa godere del mare, anzi, la posizione permette panorami suggestivi sul golfo oltre che sui vigneti, le colline delle Cinque Terre e i tetti del borgo.

In viaggio in treno per le 5 terre, tappa a Corniglia: una suggestiva località di circa 150 abitanti frazione di Vernazza in provincia della Spezia. Nonostante le dimensioni ridotte, Corniglia ha una stazione sulla direttrice tirrenica Genova-Roma, nel tratto compreso tra Genova e la Spezia. Per i treni a lunga percorrenza, la stazione di riferimento più vicina è quella della Spezia Centrale. Nel video alcuni Intercity, Frecciabianca e merci della tirrenica in transito, e le riprese di alcuni arrivi e partenze di regionali della Genova - Spezia. Buona visione!

We've stopped in Corniglia, travelling by train in Cinque Terre: an interesting town of 150 inhabitans not far from La Spezia. Corniglia has a railway station on Genoa-La Spezia line. After we arrived in Corniglia it was one setback after another. After getting injured and walking over a mile for nothing, we were ready to just get out of Corniglia.
The hike from Corniglia to Vernazza was again gorgeous. We however didn't really like being back on the blue trail because it had a lot of other people on it. It kind of took away from the feeling of being in nature.

Corniglia is a frazione ("fraction") of the comune of Vernazza in the province of La Spezia, Liguria, northern Italy. Unlike the other localities of the Cinque Terre, Corniglia is not directly adjacent to the sea. Instead, it is on the top of a promontory about 100 metres high, surrounded on three sides by vineyards and terraces and the fourth side descends steeply to the sea. To reach Corniglia, it is necessary to climb the Lardarina, a long brick flight of steps composed of 33 flights with 382 steps or, otherwise follow a vehicular road that, from the station, leads to the village. The hiking trail takes about 90 minutes, or you can arrive by train in 5 minutes. Either way this little speck of a town is worth seeing because it is the smallest and most isolated, and perhaps the oldest. Yes, there are going to be more stairs -- but just a little bit of climbing will get you around.

Unlike the other localities of the Cinque Terre, Corniglia is not directly adjacent to the sea. Instead, it is on the top of a promontory about 100 metres high, surrounded on three sides by vineyards and terraces and the fourth side descends steeply to the sea. To reach Corniglia, it is necessary to climb the Lardarina, a long brick flight of steps composed of 33 flights with 382 steps or, otherwise follow a vehicular road that, from the station, leads to the village. Sometimes a small bus runs up and down here.
The village stretches along the main road, Fieschi Road, and the houses have one side facing this road and the other facing the sea. Corniglia is characterised by narrow roads and a terrace obtained in the rock from which all other four Cinque Terre's villages, two on one side and two on the other, can be seen. The town planning structure presents also original characteristics compared to those of the other villages: the houses are lower set, and only more recently higher, similar to those of the villages of the hinterland.

Questo non significa che non si possa godere del mare, anzi, la posizione permette panorami suggestivi sul golfo oltre che sui vigneti, le colline delle Cinque Terre e i tetti del borgo.

In viaggio in treno per le 5 terre, tappa a Corniglia: una suggestiva località di circa 150 abitanti frazione di Vernazza in provincia della Spezia. Nonostante le dimensioni ridotte, Corniglia ha una stazione sulla direttrice tirrenica Genova-Roma, nel tratto compreso tra Genova e la Spezia. Per i treni a lunga percorrenza, la stazione di riferimento più vicina è quella della Spezia Centrale. Nel video alcuni Intercity, Frecciabianca e merci della tirrenica in transito, e le riprese di alcuni arrivi e partenze di regionali della Genova - Spezia. Buona visione!

After we arrived in Corniglia it was one setback after another. After getting injured and walking over a mile for nothing, we were ready to just get out of Corniglia.
The hike from Corniglia to Vernazza was again gorgeous. We however didn't really like being back on the blue trail because it had a lot of other people on it. It kind of took away from the feeling of being in nature.

TOP TRAVEL TIPS:
*To get to Cinque Terre, we flew into Milan, and took a train from Milan to Monterosso al Mare, which travelled through Genoa.
*The Cinque Terre hike is not easy, with several steep sections, but most somewhat fit people could probably do it.
*The train which links the towns is very easy and convenient, and it only takes around 15 minutes to get from one end of Cinque Terre to the other (Manorola to Riomaggori, or visa versa)
*I highly recommend staying in Monterosso. The town is the only one big enough to have anything to explore after the sun goes down. There is a west and east section of the town, with a beach, so there is plenty to do and see.
*We wish we spent three nights so we could have spent more time in Monterosso, although each of the towns are individually incredible.
*Turin (Torino) is one of my favorite cities in Italy. There are no tourists other than Italians and the city is very clean, yet Turin has that ancient Italian feel. If your travels take you near Turin, go there!

Information on how to get to Cinque Terre Italy and Monterosso Beach:
Cinque Terre is along the southwest coast of Italy, just north of another favorite Italy travel destination, The Amalfi Coast. To get to Cinque Terre, there are many ways to get there, but we suggest you fly into Genoa (Genovo), then take the Trenitalia (Treno or Train), southbound into Cinque Terre. There is not an actual town called "Cinque Terre". Cinque Terre is made up of five beautiful beach towns, starting from North going South; Levanto, Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia and Monarola. The only two towns that have beaches are Levanto and Monterosso with Monterosso being the most lively and have the most to offer. As you can see from this video there are beautiful beach girls, beach side hotels and beach front cafe's to be enjoyed.

Over the centuries, people have carefully built terraces on the rugged, steep landscape right up to the cliffs that overlook the sea. Part of its charm is the lack of visible corporate development. Paths, trains and boats connect the villages, and cars cannot reach them from the outside. The Cinque Terre area is a very popular tourist destination.
The villages of the Cinque Terre were severely affected by torrential rains which caused floods and mudslides on October 25, 2011. Nine people were confirmed killed by the floods, and damage to the villages, particularly Vernazza and Monterosso al Mare, was extensive.

Cinque Terre is along the southwest coast of Italy, just north of another favorite Italy travel destination, The Amalfi Coast. To get to Cinque Terre, there are many ways to get there, but we suggest you fly into Genoa (Genovo), then take the Trenitalia (Treno or Train), southbound into Cinque Terre. There is not an actual town called "Cinque Terre". Cinque Terre is made up of five beautiful beach towns, starting from North going South; Levanto, Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia and Monarola. The only two towns that have beaches are Levanto and Monterosso with Monterosso being the most lively and have the most to offer. As you can see from this video there are beautiful beach girls, beach side hotels and beach front cafe's to be enjoyed.
