Giambattista (o Giovanni Battista) Tiepolo (Venecia, 5 de marzo de 1696 -- Madrid, 27 de marzo de 1770) fue un pintor y grabador italiano, considerado el último gran pintor de la era barroca. Es una de las figuras más importantes del rococó italiano.

The subject of the present painting comes from Ovid's Metamorphoses (Book X) which tells of the fatal outcome of the love between the god Apollo and the mortal Hyacinth. According to the classical tale, Hyacinth died as a result of his own clumsiness when he energetically threw his discus during a match, fatally wounding himself in the head. Another version of the story recounts that the discus was thrown by Apollo, killing the boy when it rebounded off the ground or against a rock. In other versions it is the wind, Zephyr, who, jealous that Hyacinth did not return his love, blew Apollo's discus towards the young man. Unable to restore Hyacinth to life, Apollo decided to immortalise him by turning him into a flower which Tiepolo arranges in a beautiful clump next to the tennis racquet on the viewer's right.

Con motivo de la exposición La belleza encerrada. De Fra Angelico a Fortuny, Andrés Úbeda, Jefe de Conservación de Pintura Italiana y Francesa (hasta 1700) del Museo Nacional del Prado, comenta las obras El charlatán veneciano y El mundo nuevo, Giandomenico Tiepolo, (Hacia 1765).
Se trata de un par de pequeñas escenas costumbristas venecianas, resueltas por el artista con una ejecución exquisita y una especial delicadeza, de gran finura de toque, habilidades técnicas todas ellas adquiridas al trabajar al lado de su padre, Giambattista, aun cuando evolucionase progresivamente, tanto en los aspectos materiales como en los temáticos, hacia fórmulas menos grandilocuentes y más amables, de lo que son buen ejemplo estos dos lienzos compañeros.

Entre sus influencias destacan sin duda la obra de pintores venecianos como El Veronés, Tiziano y Tintoretto principalmente. Son famosos sus miniaturas de vistas de Venecia y también sus frescos ilusionistas donde hallamos representados elementos arquitectónicos y perspectivas celestes. The subject of the present painting comes from Ovid's Metamorphoses (Book X) which tells of the fatal outcome of the love between the god Apollo and the mortal Hyacinth. According to the classical tale, Hyacinth died as a result of his own clumsiness when he energetically threw his discus during a match, fatally wounding himself in the head. Another version of the story recounts that the discus was thrown by Apollo, killing the boy when it rebounded off the ground or against a rock. In other versions it is the wind, Zephyr, who, jealous that Hyacinth did not return his love, blew Apollo's discus towards the young man. Unable to restore Hyacinth to life, Apollo decided to immortalise him by turning him into a flower which Tiepolo arranges in a beautiful clump next to the tennis racquet on the viewer's right.

Con motivo de la exposición La belleza encerrada. De Fra Angelico a Fortuny, Andrés Úbeda, Jefe de Conservación de Pintura Italiana y Francesa (hasta 1700) del Museo Nacional del Prado, comenta las obras El charlatán veneciano y El mundo nuevo, Giandomenico Tiepolo, (Hacia 1765).
Se trata de un par de pequeñas escenas costumbristas venecianas, resueltas por el artista con una ejecución exquisita y una especial delicadeza, de gran finura de toque, habilidades técnicas todas ellas adquiridas al trabajar al lado de su padre, Giambattista, aun cuando evolucionase progresivamente, tanto en los aspectos materiales como en los temáticos, hacia fórmulas menos grandilocuentes y más amables, de lo que son buen ejemplo estos dos lienzos compañeros.

Entre sus influencias destacan sin duda la obra de pintores venecianos como El Veronés, Tiziano y Tintoretto principalmente. Son famosos sus miniaturas de vistas de Venecia y también sus frescos ilusionistas donde hallamos representados elementos arquitectónicos y perspectivas celestes. Sus últimas obras fueron los frescos del Palacio Real de Madrid, encargo de Carlos III.
