The Klong Toey Market (ตลาดคลองเตย) in Bangkok is one of the largest, busiest, and most important markets in the entire city.
It's the distribution point for many fruits, vegetables and meat throughout the city. As I mentioned in the video, if you should eat at any restaurant in central Bangkok, both street food or sit down restaurant alike, and it's likely that a few, if not all the ingredients were purchased from Klong Toey.
The market is in reality open 24 hours per day, but the most energetic time to visit, when the market is really at its peak is in the early morning from about 4 am to 8 am. However, you don't have to wake up too early to catch the action, the market is still nice to see and browse during the late morning or afternoon as well.
Vegetables and meat are especially cheap to buy at Klong Toey Market, and many vendors even sell their produce in large wholesale bags, specifically catering to those that have restaurants.
If you buy a lot of groceries and can't carry them all, there are plenty of porters armed with big baskets and dollies that can be hired for just $1 - $2 to transport all your things around the market. Now that's shopping in style! Wouldn't it be nice to have a person carrying around your groceries at the supermarket?!
If you are visiting Bangkok and want to get out and see the real life of the city, the market that churns part of economy and a major source of food for the city of Bangkok, you've got to visit Talad Klong Toey.
How to get to Klong Toey Market (ตลาดคลองเตย):
The market is located on the corner of Ratchada and Rama IV roads. You can either take a taxi directly there, it's really close to central Bangkok (without traffic it's about 5 minutes from Silom and about 5 minutes from Asoke).
You can also choose to take the MRT Metro underground train to Khlong Toei station, and you'll just have to walk about 5 minutes until you're in the thick of the market.
Just like at any crowded place in the world, it's always a wise decision to keep your pockets safe and take account of your valuables when you visit.

Towards the end of a ten mile walk that began in Silom I ended up walking through one of the largest slums in Bangkok, situated in Khlong Toei. This video shows a small part of the slum and then culminates with a walk through the large market in Khlong Toei which is one of the most popular markets in Bangkok. It's a very vibrant market which sells hundreds of different types of foods, many of them still alive. Despite feeling a little tremulous at times walking through the slum because I turned a lot of heads (this area isn't frequented by many farangs) I actually enjoyed the experience and encountered no problems.

Khlong Toei District
Khlong Toei (also Klong Toey, Thai: คลองเตย; IPA: [kʰlɔ̄ːŋ tɤ̄ːj]) is a district in central Bangkok, long known for its slum. It is bordered by the Chao Phraya River and contains major port facilities. It is also the location of a major market, though not one of tourist importance.
Neighboring districts are (clockwise from the north): Watthana, Phra Khanong, Amphoe Phra Pradaeng of Samut Prakan Province (across the Chao Phraya), Yan Nawa, Sathon, and Pathum Wan.
History
The district was once part of Phra Khanong, but on 9 November 1989 it was separated into a new district. Originally Khlong Toei consisted of 6 sub-districts, three of which have since left to form the new Watthana district (announced on 14 October 1997, effective from 6 March 1998).
The area has a history dating back to the ninth century as a port to cities upstream along the Chao Phraya River, such as Pak Nam Phra Pradaeng (Thai: เมืองปากน้ำพระประแดง) (as opposed to the current Amphoe Phra Pradaeng) built during the King Phutthayotfa Chulalok period. Khlong Thanon Trong (Thai: คลองถนนตรง) was a khlong (canal) and a parallel road built by King Mongkut around 1857. Later, it became known as Khlong Toei and Khlong Hua Lamphong for different sections of the canal. Khlong Toei means the canal of pandan, as the plant grew along the southern bank of the canal. The road was renamed to Rama IV Road by King Vajiravudh in 1919. In 1947, a large portion of Khlong Toei canal was filled up to expand the Rama IV Road surface.

Towards the end of a ten mile walk that began in Silom I ended up walking through one of the largest slums in Bangkok, situated in Khlong Toei. This video shows a small part of the slum and then culminates with a walk through the large market in Khlong Toei which is one of the most popular markets in Bangkok. It's a very vibrant market which sells hundreds of different types of foods, many of them still alive. Despite feeling a little tremulous at times walking through the slum because I turned a lot of heads (this area isn't frequented by many farangs) I actually enjoyed the experience and encountered no problems.

It's a huge market with not only fruits and vegetables, but also meat and other items. The area we're interested in (fruit) spans about 100 meters with stuffed market stalls! You can find anything here, as long as it is in season somewhere in Thailand. Even Durian is available year round!
Bangkok is still a city, and getting high quality produce is pretty difficult. All is streamlined and there is a high turnover, so it's even difficult to find ripe fruit! If you want super quality, you have to get out of Bangkok and go to a place like Chanthaburi or even some of the Islands.
There's many markets in Bangkok, but Khlong Toey is the one we keep going back to time and time again because of it's closeness to the city center. It's also close to Lumphini park, which is a great place to bring your newly bought durian for lunch :)

Bang Krachao (บางกระเจ้า), or the larger area of Phra Pradaeng (พระประแดง), is known as Bangkok's green lunch. It's not an island, but it's a section of land that's separated from major Bangkok by being within a horseshoe in the river. The piece of land is just across the river from Bangkok city, but it's such a world of difference. Characterized by trees, green spaces, low homes and neighborhoods, and a network of canals and elevated walking paths creates the perfect environment for a Bangkok bike tour. The first step getting to Bang Krachao (บางกระเจ้า) is to first take a taxi to Wat Khlong Toei Nok temple, located in the Khlong Toei area of Bangkok and right along the Chao Phraya river. For just 10 baht you can then board a small boat that will ferry you across the Chao Phraya to Bang Krachao (บางกระเจ้า), a whole new world. The ride takes just a few minutes.
Once you've arrived to Bang Krachao (บางกระเจ้า), you can then rent a bicycle as soon as you get off the boat. The bikes for rent cost 50 Thai Baht per hour or 100 Thai Baht per day - I think it's worth it to go for the whole day - and you might end up staying longer than you expected - so go for the day rental! After getting out trusty bicycles ready, we started off following the road enroute to the main park that's located within Bang Krachao (บางกระเจ้า). It took just about 10 minutes or less to reach the designated park where you can enter and ride and walk around for free. The park is nicely maintained and there's a large lake in the middle. But the park is not the only place to ride in Phra Pradaeng (พระประแดง). One of my favorite parts of the area is riding along the elevated concrete paths. They are raised above the ground as the ground can be muddy and flooded, but the paths provide an awesome form of transportation. They are just wide enough to have a Bangkok bike tour on them comfortably. Another interesting aspect of biking around are the many temples which are all around. You can stop off at a variety of temples when you're biking along. Also, if you go to Phra Pradaeng (พระประแดง) on the weekend, you can bike to Bang Nam Pheung (ตลาดน้ำบางน้ำผึ้ง) floating market (http://migrationology.com/2012/07/day-trip-to-bangkok-bang-nam-pheung-floating-market/). After biking around for a few hours we decided to stop at a relaxing restaurant for some Thai food lunch. There are many Thai restaurants to eat at throughout Bang Krachao (บางกระเจ้า) when you're taking a Bangkok bike tour - you'll have no problem finding food or drinks.
A Bangkok bike tour of Bang Krachao (บางกระเจ้า) and Phra Pradaeng (พระประแดง) is one of the best things to do in Bangkok! It's a great affordable attraction and offers not only some exercise from all the Thai street food, but also a time to relax and enjoy nature.

The best time to visit is early in the morning from about 4:00 am to 8:00 am, by 9am things are already getting quieter.
You’ll find Klong Toey Market on the corner of Ratchada and Rama IV roads. You can get the MRT underground train to either the Khlong Toey or Queen Sirikit National Convention Centre stations, and walk for about 5 -10 minutes to reach the market.
Thai Street Food is really delicious, it’s a must to try if you’re on holidays in Thailand. Thailand food markets are one of the best places to buy fresh and authentic Thai food, or to buy groceries and fruit while you travel in Thailand. There are so many Thai dishes on offer and the foods here are cheap, and so tasty! And in case you’re worried, eating street food is perfectly safe. It’s what the locals eat and it is cooked fresh and sold quickly. I’ve been eating it for 3 years in Thailand and my friends who have been to visit and tour Thailand have all eaten it, and none of us have had any problems. And the markets are a great place to try traditional Thai street foods, learn Thai recipes and cooking, as well as eat some of the best Thai dishes in Thailand. You'll see the people cooking the food right in front of you. And best of all, the food is cheap, often much cheaper than eating in a Thai restaurant. Eating at markets is a good way to eat cheap on your Thailand holidays.

Mariappan, president of the Salem branch of the Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, pleaded with her to sanction either PSK or PSLK to meet out the long pending demand of the public of Salem and the neighbouring districts ...
