Centcom Commander Visits Iraq and Syria

Over the past two days, during Army Gen. Joseph L. Votel's latest trip to the Middle East, the U.S. Central Command chief met in Iraq and Syria with coalition members, other partners, senior commanders and military leaders to discuss operations and continued collaboration there. Story


About the Commander

Profile photo of Army Gen. Joseph L. Votel Army Gen. Joseph L. Votel attended the U.S. Military Academy and was commissioned in 1980 as an infantry officer. His initial assignment was to the 3rd Infantry Division in Germany, where he served as a rifle platoon leader, executive officer, battalion adjutant and rifle company commander. His career then took him around the world, including stops in Italy, New York, Iraq and Afghanistan. Before taking over as Centcom commander, Votel also commanded the 75th Ranger Regiment and U.S. Special Operations Command. Biography

Iraq

June 26, 2016 Update - Coalition military forces conducted 18 strikes coordinated with and in support of the Government of Iraq using fighter and remotely piloted aircraft against ISIL targets. Near Al Baghdadi, one strike struck an ISIL staging facility. Near Ar Rutbah, one strike struck two ISIL VBIED facilities. Near Fallujah, three strikes struck three separate ISIL tactical units and destroyed 10 ISIL fighting positions, an ISIL boat, eight ISIL light machine guns, an ISIL heavy machine gun, an ISIL staging area, an ISIL VBIED, and two ISIL rocket propelled grenade systems and denied ISIL access to terrain. Near Mosul, four strikes struck two separate ISIL tactical units and destroyed an ISIL VBIED storage facility and five bed down locations. Near Qayyarah, five strikes struck three ISIL tactical units and destroyed two ISIL boats, an ISIL assembly area, three ISIL vehicles, an ISIL weapons cache, an ISIL VBIED, and an ISIL front-end loader and denied ISIL access to terrain. Near Ramadi, two strikes destroyed two ISIL boats and an ISIL front-end loader and an ISIL supply cache. Near Sinjar, two strikes struck two separate ISIL tactical units and destroyed an ISIL vehicle and two ISIL assembly areas and damaged an ISIL vehicle.

Syria

June 26, 2016 Update - Coalition military forces conducted 14 strikes using bomber, attack, fighter, and remotely piloted aircraft against ISIL targets. Near Ar Raqqah, three strikes struck an ISIL tactical unit and destroyed an ISIL vehicle and two ISIL tactical vehicles. Dayr Az Zawr, two strikes struck an ISIL gas and oil separation plant and destroyed two ISIL oil well heads. Manbij, eight strikes struck seven separate ISIL tactical units and destroyed two ISIL fighting positions, an ISIL vehicle, an ISIL vehicle borne improvised explosive device (VBIED), and an ISIL improvised explosive device (IED) and denied ISIL access to terrain. Near Mar’a, one strike destroyed an ISIL tactical vehicle.

As of 4:59 p.m. EST June 1, the U.S. and coalition have conducted a total of 12,685 strikes (8,661 Iraq / 4,024 Syria).

  • U.S. has conducted 9,663 strikes in Iraq and Syria (5,876 Iraq / 3,787 Syria)
  • Rest of Coalition has conducted 3,022 strikes in Iraq and Syria (2,785 Iraq / 237 Syria)

As of Apr. 16, U.S. and partner nation aircraft have flown an estimated 91,821 sorties in support of operations in Iraq and Syria.

Cost of Operations

As of May 15, 2016, the total cost of operations related to ISIL since kinetic operations started on August 8, 2014, is $7.5 billion and the average daily cost is $11.7 million for 647 days of operations. A further breakdown of cost associated with the operations is here.
