Synopsis:
The plot of Tsuchi focuses on a family of farmers who are down on their luck, but also extensively depicts the rural community's milieu, daily work and way of life. Kanji (Isamu Kosugi) is embittered because he has to pay off the debts of his dead wife's father (Kaichi Yamamoto). He is also overly protective of his daughter, Otsugi (Akiko Kazami), which severely restricts her interaction with the community.
Donald Richie on Tsuchi:
Uchida's main contribution to the new realism came in 1939 with the film Earth (Tsuchi), which, given the circumstances of its creation, was made possible only by the complete devotion of the director, his actors and technicians, and their firm belief in the potential of realism as a screen style. A documentary in its insistence upon showing only what actually existed, it very carefully chronicled the seasons and used only the slightest of stories: a farmer loses his inherited money and is forced into poverty; driven to despair, he yet manages to find new faith. The film scrupulously avoided defining the new faith but neither sentimentalized nor patronized the farmers.
When the Nikkatsu chiefs heard that Uchida wanted to make Earth they were strongly against it. Though Nikkatsu had been slowly recovering from the losses it had recently incurred, the company was in no position to make a film as experimental as this one, the main objection being the expense: since the film was to show the effect of the seasons on farming life, it would take a year to film. Even if the head office was opposed, the studio people were behind the project, and though Nikkatsu had officially decided against making the film, it continued to be made in secret. Facilities, money, and film from other productions were slipped to the Earth production unit. A roll of raw stock from this production, two from that, were smuggled in while Uchida dashed back to the studios every week or so to turn out money-making films like A Thousand and One Nights In Tokyo (Tokyo Senichi-ya.)
The studio heads, never too close to what was going on under them, were slow in noticing all this activity, but eventually became suspicious and finally alarmed. When the finished film was presented to them they were vastly annoyed but finally agreed to release it only as a sort of gesture of good will toward their obviously devoted employees. To their intense surprise the film was a great success. It won the Kinema Jumpo "Best One" award for the year and earned an absolutely unprecedented return on investment since no costs were ever credited to the unit, the film having been made entirely with "borrowed" resources.

This print of Earth was discovered in East Germany in 1968, and is seriously compromised. On top of a bad case of nitrate damage and hard-coded German subtitles, the film is missing its first and last reel, around 49 minutes. A 119-minute version of the film, again with hard-coded subtitles, was discovered in Russia around the turn of the millennium. It, too, is missing the last reel (about 23 minutes).

Facilities, money, and film from other productions were slipped to the Earth production unit. Synopsis:
The plot of Tsuchi focuses on a family of farmers who are down on their luck, but also extensively depicts the rural community's milieu, daily work and way of life. Kanji (Isamu Kosugi) is embittered because he has to pay off the debts of his dead wife's father (Kaichi Yamamoto). He is also overly protective of his daughter, Otsugi (Akiko Kazami), which severely restricts her interaction with the community.

Uchida's main contribution to the new realism came in 1939 with the film Earth (Tsuchi), which, given the circumstances of its creation, was made possible only by the complete devotion of the director, his actors and technicians, and their firm belief in the potential of realism as a screen style. A documentary in its insistence upon showing only what actually existed, it very carefully chronicled the seasons and used only the slightest of stories: a farmer loses his inherited money and is forced into poverty; driven to despair, he yet manages to find new faith. The film scrupulously avoided defining the new faith but neither sentimentalized nor patronized the farmers.

The film scrupulously avoided defining the new faith but neither sentimentalized nor patronized the farmers.
When the Nikkatsu chiefs heard that Uchida wanted to make Earth they were strongly against it. Though Nikkatsu had been slowly recovering from the losses it had recently incurred, the company was in no position to make a film as experimental as this one, the main objection being the expense: since the film was to show the effect of the seasons on farming life, it would take a year to film. Even if the head office was opposed, the studio people were behind the project, and though Nikkatsu had officially decided against making the film, it continued to be made in secret. Facilities, money, and film from other productions were slipped to the Earth production unit. A roll of raw stock from this production, two from that, were smuggled in while Uchida dashed back to the studios every week or so to turn out money-making films like A Thousand and One Nights In Tokyo (Tokyo Senichi-ya.)
The studio heads, never too close to what was going on under them, were slow in noticing all this activity, but eventually became suspicious and finally alarmed. When the finished film was presented to them they were vastly annoyed but finally agreed to release it only as a sort of gesture of good will toward their obviously devoted employees. To their intense surprise the film was a great success. It won the Kinema Jumpo "Best One" award for the year and earned an absolutely unprecedented return on investment since no costs were ever credited to the unit, the film having been made entirely with "borrowed" resources.

This print of Earth was discovered in East Germany in 1968, and is seriously compromised. On top of a bad case of nitrate damage and hard-coded German subtitles, the film is missing its first and last reel, around 49 minutes. A 119-minute version of the film, again with hard-coded subtitles, was discovered in Russia around the turn of the millennium. It, too, is missing the last reel (about 23 minutes).
