Plot: Duke is a modern day telling of a classic western film. Dare and Roost are brothers who have been raised in a reformatory, taught to survive and conditioned to trust no one. They have moved to West Los Angeles, where Dare moonlights himself as a Detective and Roost blankets himself in old John Wayne films and reclusive habit. Cleaning the streets and ridding the neighborhoods of scum, this contemporary study finds Dare obsessed with a phantom like criminal (Winky) who seems to be terrorizing the community. Simultaneously, the same exact investigation is being led by official and likely engrossed Detective Robert Morrison. As Dare closes in on Winky and the entire department closes in on them both, these brothers must make the ultimate commitment and pay the extraordinary consequences therein.

Quotes:
John Riegert: [ looking at a crowded street ] Just shove them out of the way::Dani Simionescu: [incredulous] They're human beings, John, not sheep::John Riegert: If you insist on splitting hairs.::Dani Simionescu: I do, actually.::John Riegert: [pause] That one looks like a sheep.
Ion: [as Belial] Frankly I expected more of a scuffle. But then again, you do have a lot of self imposed limitations here. Hardly makes a game of it.::John Riegert: Don't worry. I think I can keep it interesting.::Ion: I do hope so... for old times' sake.
John Riegert: It's done. For now.::Allison: Where is he?::John Riegert: Belial? He's where he belongs. With Me.::[looks up at sky]::John Riegert: God created the world in seven days. This is the eighth. Remember, there are still so many out there that despise you. And your kind.::Allison: Why?::John Riegert: Because of what you are. And more than that, what you might yet become.::Allison: What about you? Do you despise me?
Laurel: Sorry I'm late. We had to stop for petrol and sweets.
Dani Simionescu: [on Serban's murder] I didn't do it, if that's what you're driving at, John. You see, I like to see their faces.::John Riegert: You're acting rather cavalier for a man in your tenuous position.::Dani Simionescu: That's fucking it!::[pulls the car over]::Dani Simionescu: Right, let's get one thing straight. I know when someone's trying to sweat me and quite frankly I don't fucking like it, so if you've got something to say, say it to my fucking face or get the fuck out of my fucking car.::John Riegert: I believe you're guilty of nothing more than a certain degree of moral ambivalence.
Laurel: From here on, you need to understand something.::Hardy: What?::Laurel: You need to understand that if you haven't stopped following me by the time I reach the top of these stairs, I'm going to have to put a bullet through your head.
Dani Simionescu: Not again. I do wish you'd stop shoving things down your knickers, Serban. Makes me feel so cheap.
John Riegert: Your mother didn't weep for you, Dani. But she weeps for you now.::John Riegert: [after quick flashback to Dani's mother] You can hear it, everytime you close your eyes, can't you?::Dani Simionescu: Tell me, who you are.::John Riegert: Are you sure that's what you really want?
John Riegert: [first line in the movie] I'm here to find one lost soul. I have no interests in tyrants or heros. Rather I prefer the lives of smaller men. The ones left behind.
John Riegert: He's lying. He can't touch you.::Allison: How do I know that?::John Riegert: Because this house, forgive the overused metaphor is Hell on Earth. It was ceded to me by virtue of the deeds commited here which makes it my domain. My house. My rules.::Allison: What about you?::John Riegert: I don't want the book. It repulses me. I'd much prefer you kept it.::Laurel: Oh brilliant. You're not even going for the win now? How pathetic. Great Satan himself and he's playing for the draw?::John Riegert: There's always tomorrow, Belial.

Smut: The object of this game is to dare to fall with a noose around your neck from a place sufficiently high enough off the ground, such that the fall will hang you. The object of the game is to punish those who have caused great unhappiness by their selfish actions. This is the best game of all, because the winner is also the loser, and the judge's decision is always final.

Quotes:
Mitch: The park is mine!
[after Valery is shot]::Mitch: You ignorant mother fuckers have just shot an innocent photojournalist here! A female...::[Mitch is cut off by a burst of gunfire]
Mitch: I never meant to hurt anyone.::Valery: You shove a gun in an old man's face and tell him you're gonna blow his head off, and he dies of a heart attack because he's so fucking scared, and you're not responsible because your gun isn't loaded?
Mitch: Take off your clothes.::Valery: What?::Mitch: [shouts] Get naked!
[after killing Tran Chan Dinh, a mercenary sent to kill him]::Mitch: Those sick sons-of-bitches! They're sending in the Viet Cong to get *me*!
Valery: You were in the Marines?::Mitch: No. US Army.::Valery: So, what did you do in the army?::Mitch: Sneak into places, blow shit up, and kill people.
Mitch: [Speaking into radio] I don't want to hurt anyone. That's the first thing. I could have, but I didn't... even though there have been several attempts on my life. My name is not important; I'm just a guy. Nobody pays much attention to guys like me. I don't mean just because I'm a vet; I mean because my whole life has been directed by other people... I guess I let them. There's a lot of people like me in this city, who don't feel they have any control over their lives. A few weeks ago I got fed up; I couldn't hold a job, I couldn't put certain things behind me... my wife and I split up and my little boy's... whatever. And then a friend of mine killed himself - he was a vet, a good American, all those things... and when he wasn't useful anymore it was like he didn't exist; it was like he was made out of glass and they just looked right through him, and that boy disappeared. I am staying in this park until nine o'clock Wednesday night - that is Veteran's Day. All I want is for all of you to think about what is going on in your lives and in this city; about how you are treated and how you treat other people. I came here to say that one ordinary man can have some power - right now I matter, right now I make a difference, and I will NOT disappear.

Plot: Filmmaker Shirley Clarke ("The Connection") directs this powerful, stark semi-documentary look at the horrors of Harlem ghetto slum life filled with drugs, violence, human misery, and a sense of despair due to the racial prejudices of American society. There is no patronizing of the black race in this cinematic cry for justice. A fifteen-year-old boy called Duke is ambitious to buy a "piece" (a gun) from an adult racketeer named Priest, to become president of the gang to which he belongs, and to return them to active "bopping" (gang fighting) which has declined in Harlem. It is a clearly patent allegory of an attempt by Duke to attain manhood and identity in the only way accessible to him - the antisocial one.
