North Korea ( listen), officially the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK; Chosŏn'gŭl: 조선민주주의인민공화국; hancha: 朝鮮民主主義人民共和國; MR: Chosŏn Minjujuŭi Inmin Konghwaguk), is a country in East Asia, in the northern part of the Korean Peninsula. The name Korea is derived from the Kingdom of Goguryeo, also spelled as Koryŏ. The capital and largest city is Pyongyang. North Korea shares a land border with China to the north and northwest, along the Amnok (Yalu) and Tumen rivers, and a small section of the Tumen River also forms a border with Russia to the northeast. The Korean Demilitarized Zone marks the boundary between North Korea and South Korea.
Korea was annexed by the Empire of Japan in 1910. After the Japanese surrender at the end of World War II in 1945, Korea was divided into two zones by the United States and the Soviet Union, with the north occupied by the Soviets and the south by the Americans. Negotiations on reunification failed, and in 1948 two separate governments were formed: the Democratic People's Republic of Korea in the north, and the Republic of Korea in the south. An invasion initiated by North Korea led to the Korean War (1950–53). Although the Korean Armistice Agreement brought about a ceasefire, no official peace treaty was ever signed. Both states were accepted into the United Nations in 1991.
Tŏkch'ŏn is a si, or city, in northern South P'yŏngan province, North Korea. It is bordered by Nyŏngwŏn and Maengsan to the east, Kujang county in North P'yŏngan province to the north, Kaech'ŏn to the west and Pukch'ang to the south. It was known as "Tokugawa" during Japanese rule.
Tŏkch'ŏn-si is divided into 22 tong (neighbourhoods) and 10 ri (villages):
The Sŭngri Motor Plant (and associated workshops) have been one of the few domestic sources of both low-cost replicas of foreign passenger cars and military-service trucks in North Korea since it was established in 1950 and developed through the massive militarization campaigns of Kim Il-sung in the 1970s and 80s.
However, the total depletion of foreign credit by the end of the 1980s caused the manufacturing industry to rapidly implode; the supply of steel for metalworking at Sŭngri slowed to a trickle, and even when available, the production lines had regular power outages. The severe famine in the countryside had also caused a mass exodus of starving peasants to the cities, further straining food supplies and worker productivity. 20,000 cars and trucks were made in Tŏkch'ŏn in 1980, by 1996 the number was just 150, all of which were Army trucks, some later modified as rocket artillery launchers.
The Diplomat is an online international news magazine covering politics, society, and culture in the Asia-Pacific region. It is based in Tokyo, Japan.
It was originally an Australian bi-monthly print magazine, founded by Minh Bui Jones, David Llewellyn-Smith and Sung Lee in 2001. The first edition was published in April 2002, with Bui Jones as the founding editor and Llewellyn-Smith the founding publisher.
In September 2004, the U.S. magazine Time forced the cancellation of advertisements by The Diplomat, which emphasised the magazine's Australian perspective by presenting the national flags of the United States, the UK, and Australia and logos of Time and The Economist below a headline "To which view do you subscribe?"
The magazine was acquired by James Pach through his company Trans-Asia Inc. in December 2007. Pach assumed the role of executive publisher and hired former Penthouse editor Ian Gerrard to update its presentation. Nonetheless, the print edition suffered continued losses, and The Diplomat eventually went completely online in August 2009. Its Sydney office was closed and its headquarters were moved to Tokyo; Jason Miks was appointed editor in September 2009 and Ulara Nakagawa was appointed associate editor. Miks was succeeded as editor by Harry Kazianis before publisher James Pach took over. Shannon Tiezzi currently serves as managing editor. Franz-Stefan Gady, Ankit Panda, Catherine Putz, and Prashanth Parameswaran are associate editors.
North is a noun, adjective, or adverb indicating direction or geography. North is one of the four cardinal directions or compass points. It is the opposite of south and is perpendicular to east and west.
The word north is related to the Old High German nord, both descending from the Proto-Indo-European unit ner-, meaning "down" (or "under"). (Presumably a natural primitive description of its concept is "to the left of the rising sun".)
The Latin word borealis comes from the Greek boreas "north wind, north", which, according to Ovid, was personified as the son of the river-god Strymon, the father of Calais and Zetes. Septentrionalis is from septentriones, "the seven plow oxen", a name of Ursa Maior. The Greek arktikos is named for the same constellation, and is the derivation of the English word "Arctic".
Other languages have sometimes more interesting derivations. For example, in Lezgian, kefer can mean both 'disbelief' and 'north', since to the north of the Muslim Lezgian homeland there are areas formerly inhabited by non-Muslim Caucasian and Turkic peoples. In many languages of Mesoamerica, "north" also means "up". In Hungarian the word for north is észak, which is derived from éjszaka ("night"), since above the Tropic of Cancer, the Sun never shines from the north.
Korea, called Chosŏn (Korean: 조선; Hanja: 朝鮮) in North Korea and Hanguk (Korean: 한국; Hanja: 韓國) or Daehanminkuk (Korean: 대한민국; Hanja: 大韓民國) in South Korea, is an East Asian territory that is divided into two distinct sovereign states: North Korea, formally the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), and South Korea, formally the Republic of Korea (ROK). Located on the Korean Peninsula, Korea is bordered by China to the northwest and Russia to the northeast. It is separated from Japan to the east by the Korea Strait and the Sea of Japan .
Korea emerged as a singular political entity after centuries of conflict among the Three Kingdoms of Korea, which were unified as Silla (57 BC – AD 935) and Balhae (AD 698 – 926). The united Silla was eventually succeeded by Goryeo in 935 at the end of the Later Three Kingdoms period. Goryeo, which gave name to the modern exonym "Korea", was a highly cultured state and created the Jikji in the 14th century. The invasions by the Mongol Empire in the 13th century, however, greatly weakened the nation, which forced it into vassalage. After the Yuan dynasty's collapse, severe political strife followed. Goryeo eventually fell to an uprising led by General Yi Seong-gye, who established Joseon in 1388.

"In its relentless pursuit of nuclear strength, North Korea's first land target may have actually been itself. The Diplomat reported Wednesday that an intermediate range ballistic missile launched by the regime last spring accidentally hit the city of Tokchon, which has a population of more than 200,000. The missile was launched from an airfield just over 40 miles north of North Korea's capital city of Pyongyang. An unnamed U.S. official explained to The Diplomat that due to an engine malfunction, the projectile made it only a minute into its test flight and traveled about 25 miles northeast before hitting the ground. The Diplomat cross-referenced the failed missile's approximate landing site with Google Earth and other satellite imaging to find that the suspected landing area did indeed...

According to a report from The Diplomat, a ballistic missile fired from North Korea failed and fell upon a city in the country. The report indicates that the missile exploded on impact in the North Korean city of Tokchon, and destroyed some buildings. No assessment of the damage was made in the report, however, structural damage in Tokchon was confirmed using publicly available satellite photography. The launch took place on April 28, 2017, but at the time, reports only discovered that the Hwasong-12 missile failed about a minute into flight. https://gizmodo.com/north-korea-accidentally-hit-its-own-city-during-missil-1821747406 http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by YT Wochit News using http://wochit.com
Satellite images show damage caused by a failed test launch that struck Tokchon, a city of 200,000 in the interior of Kim Jong-un's secretive state, according to a US government official. The Hwasong KN-17 medium-range rocket was fired from Pukchang Airfield in South Pyongan Province, 40 miles north of Pyongyang on April 28 last year, it is claimed. But it failed shortly after take-off, the Diplomat reports, before crashing down in the Chongsin-dong area of Tokchon, apparently damaging what looks like an agricultural or industrial building. The unnamed source pointed out where the rocket had landed and Google Earth images taken on May 18 last year, just weeks after the launch, appear to show damage to a greenhouse-style structure at the same spot.
After Trump Threatens ‘Fat Boy,’ World Shocked To Hear About Explosion In North Korea Source and content: https://goo.gl/r6CrK1 President Donald Trump recently made international headlines after threatening “fat boy” Kim Jong Un with nuclear warfare. Now, the world has once again been left in shock just a few days following Trump’s warning to the dictator, after reports broke of an explosion in a North Korean town of 200,000 people. Trump isn’t a man you want to mess with, and he’s proven that both in his business dealings prior to his time in the White House and during his presidency. Despite the fact that North Korea is a decrepit third world nation, full of disease, famine, and poverty, the nation’s dictator seems intent on pretending to be one of the big boys. Proving just that, we’...

President Donald Trump’s tweets have everyone worried about a missile from North Korea reaching the United States. But a North Korea failed missile test that crashed in Tokchon, a North Korean city, reveals the roadblocks the country faces as it tries to develop a serious weapons program.North Korea launched a Hwasong-12/KN17 intermediate-range ballistic missile on April 28 last year from Pukchang Airfield in South Pyongan Province, The Diplomat reported Wednesday. The missile crashed soon after launch because of engine failure and landed in a complex of either industrial or agricultural buildings in Tokchon, about 40 miles away. The missile only flew for one minute, never higher than about 43 miles. This was North Korea’s third test of the Hwasong-12, before ultimately completing a successful...
North Korea’s ballistic missile program isn’t as reliable as Kim Jung Un would have us believe, and a new report proves as much. Over the past year, the rogue regime has launched numerous ICBMs as it continues its pursuit of a missile capable of carrying a nuclear payload across the world. While most of the tests have been considered “successful” – they left the ground, went into space, then landed some distance away – at least one wasn’t, and the results were not good at all. According to a report from the Daily Mail, the hermit nation conducted a medium-range missile test earlier this year, and things didn’t exactly go as planned. In fact, the missile’s engine apparently had a failure, and ‘Lil Kim ended up bombing his own nation with it. You seriously can’t make this stuff up. From ...
North Korea Accidentally Hit Its Own City During Failed 2017 Missile Test An intermediate-range ballistic missile launched in April 2017 by North Korea is reported to have crashed down in Tokchon, a town north of Pyongyang, which may have resulted in casualties, according to Fox News. The third of three apparent failed launches, the IRBM was launched near Pukchang Airfield located in South Pyongan Province on April 28, 2017. A U.S. government source with knowledge of the communist regime’s nuclear weapons program stated that “the missile’s first stage engines failed after approximately one minute of powered flight, resulting in catastrophic failure,” The Diplomat reported.Due to the country’s notorious secrecy, it has been almost impossible for those outside of North Korea to get an accu...

North Korea has been on my list for years and finally I made it. This short VLOG should give you a little impression of what it is like to travel to the DPRK or better known as North Korea. I went on a 3-days tour starting in Dandong, China. I went with Young Pioneer Tours and it was an incredible experience. I don't have an opinion on whether it was staged or not, whether they are bad or good, or how I feel about the whole trip. I went to the DPRK as a tourist and for a cultural exchange. An informative travel log from a visit to the most isolated country in the world, including a review of food and accommodation.
I went on a 3 day guided tour in Pyongyang, North Korea in April 2017, and I put together this short video/documentary from trip. Please keep in mind that this video is about my own personal experiences in North Korea, so please take what I say with a grain of salt. I am well aware that all tours to North Korea are organized and preplanned, and what I saw was a skewed perspective (a small fraction) of the realities that may exist behind closed doors. My goal in making this video (and all videos) has always been the same – to focus on spreading happiness & positivity in our world by connecting with people across the globe. While it’s a bit more challenging to do this in North Korea, I tried my best to show you a different side of North Korea and connect with the people – apart fr...
This is a film about a traveller in the strange land called North Korea or officially the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK). Tours to the DPRK are tightly scheduled and normally include a visit to the demilitarised zone, museums and statues to Kim Il-Sung and Kim Jong-Il, Pyongyang’s amusements parks, chandelier-laden metro system and showcase entertainment facilities such as the Circus and the SchoolChildren's Palace. In addition to these, I took a flightseeing flight on a Mi-17 helicopter over the DPRK's capital city of Pyongyang. As well, as my tour was an extended one, it also went the northeast of the DPRK to the tri-country area around the Rason Special Economic Zone where the DPRK, China and Russia conjoin. The cult of the Kims is perhaps the most extraordinary feature...

Airborne assaults are designed around two key tenants. The first is fast action, that is getting to a point before anyone else can. The second is fast reaction, or being able to deploy forces to deal with problems in due haste. This deck does just that. It's an American deck with tonnes of infantry designed to respond to all situations and grab land quickly. The weakness of this sort of deck is obviously that it cannot push as well as others because of the lack of artillery for smoking out areas. I've been driving all night
Bathing in flourescent light
Of a western Tennessee gas station
With a pack of two-way action
I'm subsisting on a fraction
And I close my eyes and pretend
I'm on vacation
But the light bleeds through
And it's all green-blue
There goes my imagination
My return fills me with dread
Will my house plants be all dead
My significant be with another
I say ok where was I
But I can't repress a sigh
And I think I'm gonna
Yeah I think I'm gonna call my mother
Let the subject wander
To issues of blonde hair
Or something or other
Like a bad haircut
Or a glass of cold water
Some of the things
You wouldn't ordinarily thought a
Will all be lost if you let it in
Maybe I'll never ever feel it again
I've been driving all night
Bathing in fluorescent light
Of a western Tennessee gas station
With a pack of two-way action
I'm subsisting on a fraction
Of what used to be a sugar-free
Half-melted bag of Tastations
That hard candy sensation
It's sweeping the nation
And it
Puts my mind in traction
I'm subsisting on a fraction
And I close my eyes and pretend
I'm on vacation
But while it melts in my mouth
I'm still driving south
In a TV Nation
Like a bad haircut
Or a glass of cold water
Shouldn't I say what I really shouldn't oughta
You spend half a day in
Some of these places
Like a flash of white light
That's in front of our faces
A state of peristalsis or a parastatic stasis
