Everything you need to know about finding a Window Shutter Installer

Window shutters are an attractive window covering and provide privacy, insulation and, in some cases, security.  They are usually made from wood or aluminium; however, vinyl shutters are also available.  Window shutters may be used either inside or outside the home and can be fixed in a number of ways. Read on for more information about window shutters:

The Advantages of Window Shutters

There are many advantages to installing shutters in your home, including:
  • Protection against intruders
  • Protection against storms
  • No need for curtains or blinds, making them a good choice for allergy sufferers
  • Still allows fresh air and light into the home
  • Insulates against noise and heat

Choosing the Right Window Shutters

When choosing shutters for your home, you need to consider which shutter is best for your needs.  Will you be using them for security, as an alternative to other window coverings, or for privacy?  The design of your house is also a factor in choosing the right shutters, as shutters come in a range of styles to suit either modern or traditional homes.

Materials Used in Window Shutters

Window shutters can be wood, aluminium or vinyl (see our article about vinyl window shutters).  Many different types of wood can be used; however, cedar is a good choice as it is weather resistant and resistant to decay. Timber window shutters are also an elegant and practical options (see timber shutters). Wood can be stained, oiled, lacquered or even painted to suit the house.  Aluminium shutters are low maintenance, as are vinyl shutters.  Aluminium and vinyl shutters come in different colours.

Types of Window Shutters

There are several types of shutters available such as:

  • Hinged with joinery
  • Hinged without joinery
  • Bifolding
  • Sliding
  • Fixed
  • Roller
  • Venetian (see Venetian shutters)

Window shutters also come in a range of blade profiles (the individual louver in the shutter).  A general rule to follow is that the larger the window or opening, the larger the blade profile should be.  To follow on from that, the larger the blade profile, the more view you will have.  Blades may be operable or fixed.

Security WIndow Shutters

Security window shutters are usually fixed to the outside of the house and are made from interlocking, extruded aluminium and can be fixed or roll-down (see external shutters).  Roll-down shutters can be affixed to doors as well as windows.  The slats are set within two side channels on either side of the window, and this provides strength and resistance against intrusion.  Security shutters can also be fitted with a variety of locks as needed.  If you want security without compromising your view, fixed shutters can still provide a view and allow ventilation to your home.  Fixed shutters can be fully framed or frameless to suit your home.

Why Choose a Professional Window Shutter Company?

Window shutters can be installed by fixing the shutters directly to the house; however, these are usually on the exterior and cannot be moved later.  Operable shutters can be installed and these can be fixed to the interior or the exterior of the house as desired. For more information see shutters - installation only.

A professional can firstly measure the window or door where the shutter is being installed to guarantee that it will be a perfect fit. They can also suggest what materials would be best for your needs and even custom make and install the shutters to your exact specifications. For more info see custom design & install shutters.

When choosing your professional, make sure that they are qualified, experienced and able to provide references.  They should also provided you with a free quote.
