What Stonemasons Do
Stonemasons may perform the following tasks among others:
- Estimate the amount of materials required for the job either through taking measurements or reading blueprints or work orders
- Cut and shape stone or other masonry materials using hand tools or power tools as required
- Cut and polish marble or granite that is being used in construction, such as kitchen benchtops
- Design and carve monumental masonry – things such as lettering on stone or the base of a statue
- Build walls using stone and masonry slabs
- Lay paving or marble or granite floor tiles
- Repair stone facades

Stonemasons can also build things such as retaining walls, fireplaces, water features, stairways, feature walls, barbecues and chimneys. They also create stone flagging (see stone flagging) and stone walls (see stone walls).
Hiring a Stonemason
Stonemasons should be qualified and, in some states, they need to have a license. When hiring a professional to carry out your project, also ensure that they have the correct insurances if your project is fairly large. Agree to the price of the job of the job before any work starts and, if possible, look at examples of their previous work to ensure that they have the experience to do what you need.
