The Nobility of Italy comprises individuals and their families of the Italian peninsula, and the islands linked with it, recognized by sovereigns, such as the Holy Roman Emperor, the Holy See, the Kings of Italy, and certain other Italian kings and sovereigns, as members of a class of persons officially enjoying hereditary privileges which distinguished them from other persons and families. They often held lands as fiefs and were sometimes endowed with hereditary titles or nobiliary particles. From the Middle Ages until 1861, "Italy" was not a single country but was a number of separate kingdoms and other states, with many reigning dynasties. These were often related through marriage to each other and to other European royal families.
Before Italian Unification there was a relatively large nobility in Italy.
Indeed, in the mid-19th century, the existence of the Kingdom of Sardinia, the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies (before 1816: the Kingdom of Naples and the Kingdom of Sicily), the Grand Duchy of Tuscany, the Duchy of Parma, the Duchy of Modena, the Duchy of Savoy, the Duchy of Milan, the Papal States, various republics and the Austrian and French dependencies in Northern Italy led to parallel nobilities with different traditions and rules.
The Black Nobility or Black Aristocracy (Italian: nobiltà nera, aristocrazia nera) are Roman aristocratic families who sided with the Papacy under Pope Pius IX after the Savoy family-led army of the Kingdom of Italy entered Rome on September 20, 1870, overthrew the Pope and the Papal States, and took over the Quirinal Palace, and any nobles subsequently ennobled by the Pope prior to the 1929 Lateran Treaty. For the next 59 years, the Pope confined himself to Vatican City and claimed to be a prisoner in the Vatican to avoid the appearance of accepting the authority of the new Italian government and state. Aristocrats who had been ennobled by the Pope and were formerly subjects of the Papal states, including the senior members of the Papal Court, kept the doors of their palaces in Rome closed to mourn the Pope's confinement, which led to their being called the "Black Nobility".
The Annuario della Nobiltà Italiana (Yearbook of Italian Nobility) was a genealogical publication on noble families resident in Italy, founded in Pisa in 1878 by Giovanni Battista Crollalanza (Fermo, March 19, 1819 – Pisa, March 18, 1892) and published by Accademia Italiana d'Araldica (Italian Academy of Heraldry) until 1905.
A century later (98 years later, to be precise), the SAGI publishing house resumed publication with the same title, adding "notable families" and families not resident in Italy. This new Annuario della Nobiltà Italiana has been published irregularly every two or three years; it lists about forty thousand families in seven categories. The latest edition, the fifth of the new series, is a large single volume marked as the 32nd, dated 2010-2013, and includes, in addition to families of the Kingdom of Italy and the pre-unitary states, the complete listing of families in the Libro d'Oro of the Italian Consulta Araldica abolished in 1948.
The thirty-first edition of the "Annuario della Nobiltà Italiana" (Yearbook of the Italian Nobility) is the monumental edition of this books series, founded during the year 1878, by Giovan Battista di Crollalanza, the greatest italian genealogist. This edition is the essential reference about the Italian aristocracy and is the only up-to-date printed reference guide to the all Italian titled families, published in the late 2010 year. This edition collects historical and genealogical datas of (about) 48,000 Italian families and was honored by the preface of H.R.H. Prince Amedeo of Savoy, Head of the Royal House of Italy. The XXXI edition of Italian's most prestigious genealogical reference work, which has mapped the ancestries of the Italian aristocracy for over three centuries, was pub...

Universal Ballet’s version of Romeo and Juliet was created by world-renowned Artistic Director Oleg Vinogradov to celebrate the 2002 Korea/Japan FIFA World Cup. Universal Ballet’s production of the tragic story of these star-crossed lovers includes energetic sword-fights, classical Italian architecture, and costumes that evoke the spirit of the renaissance Italian nobility. The lively carnival scenes in the 2nd act provide a wonderful contrast with the pensive and private vignettes in the cathedral and Juliet’s bedroom. The production accentuates the reconciliation of the two families as they meet before the bodies of their young heirs, and the scene of mourning is transformed into a monument to peace.
The great film soundtrack master is at again, this time brilliantly capturing the desolation and loneliness of the Italian General Nobile's doomed trip over the North Pole by dirigible airship in 1928. Based on a true story of his attempts to be the first to do this, The Red Tent (1969) was critically well received but bombed at the box office. Here is the epic 22 minute Others, Who Will Follow Us, recorded from the original vinyl release on Paramount Records in 1971.

Among the great reformers of the troubled sixteenth century, Borromeo, with St. Ignatius of Loyola, St. Philip Neri, and others, led the movement to combat the inroads of the Protestant Reformation. He was a leading figure during the Counter-Reformation and was responsible for significant reforms in the Catholic Church, including the founding of seminaries for the education of priests. He is honoured as a saint in the Catholic Church and his feast day is 4 November. Charles' biography was originally written by three of his contemporaries: Agostino Valerio (afterwards cardinal and Bishop of Verona) and Carlo Bascape (General of ...

Władysław IV was the son of Sigismund III Vasa (Polish: Zygmunt III Waza) and his wife, Anna of Austria (also known as Anna of Habsburg). In 1610 the teen-aged Władysław was elected Tsar of Russia by the Seven Boyars, but did not assume the Russian throne due to his father's opposition and a popular uprising in Russia. Nevertheless, until 1634 he used the title of Grand Duke of Muscovy. Elected king of Poland in 1632, Władysław was fairly successful in defending the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwe...
