Imagine yourself in Lancia’s position in the early 1980s. Your Stratos has recently won three consecutive World Rally Championships (1974-76) but you can see the writing on the wall, writing which reads “all-wheel-drive.” How do you build on this past success and continue to be competitive in the new decade? For Lancia, the answer was the 037, which would ultimately become, in 1983, the last rear-wheel-drive car to win the WRC Manufacturers' Championship before AWD competitors like the Audi Quattro and Peugeot 205 T16 completely changed the sport forever.
To compete in Group B events, Lancia was obliged to meet homologation rules by producing 200 street versions of the 037. While visually striking and invigorating to drive, the 037 Stradale remains, at heart, a race car and is thus anything but comfortable. This, however, is precisely what appeals to owner Philip Toledano, who grew up watching Lancia–more specifically, the Stratos and 037–dominate European rally racing.
“It’s not like [the 037] was just a sports car designed for people who wanted to go fast,” says Phil. “This was designed for a purpose, and I love things that were designed specifically for a purpose, like a tool–except it's a fast tool that scares the crap out of you.”
The interior of the 037 Stradale belies the car’s racing heritage: the dash contains a circuit board, conveniently located for periodic resets by the navigator; a navigator’s light stands at the ready; and the oil temperature gauge is located on the far right side of the dash, in front of the navigator’s seat. The 037's exterior is similarly eye-catching. Sporting a Pininfarina body and a 2.0 liter, supercharged Abarth engine that, as Phil puts it, makes Star Wars-like noises as he revs through the gears, the car attracts onlookers wherever it goes.
Usually, however, this 037 is but a screaming red blur, leaving those onlookers little time to realize what they’ve just seen.

1958 Lancia Aurelia. Shortly after Vincenzo Lancia was born in 1881, his father chose his future, deciding that his son would become a lawyer. Sadly, Vincenzo proved inattentive at his studies, so papa Giuseppe reformulated his plan, sending his son to college at age 12 with the goal of becoming an accountant. Lancia Automobiles S.p.A. (Italian pronunciation: [ˈlantʃa]) is an Italian automobile manufacturer founded in 1906 by Vincenzo Lancia and which became part of the Fiat Group in 1969. The company has a long history of producing distinctive cars and also has a strong rally heritage. Some modern Lancias are seen as presenting a more luxurious alternative to the models in the Fiat range upon which they are based. One of the firm's trademarks is the use of letters of the Greek alphabet as the names of its models.
Lancia was founded on 29 November 1906 in Turin by Vincenzo Lancia and his friend Claudio Fogolin, both being Fiat racing drivers, as Lancia & C. The first Lancia automobile the "tipo 51" or 12 HP (later called Alfa) was made in 1907 and produced from 1908. This car had a small four cylinder engine with a power of 58 bhp. In 1937 Vincenzo died of a heart attack, and his wife Adele Miglietti Lancia and his son Gianni Lancia took over the firm. They persuaded Vittorio Jano to join Lancia as an engineer. Jano had already made a name for himself by constructing the Alfa Romeo 1750 Sport Alfa Romeo 6C, 2300, 2900, P2 Alfa Romeo P2 and P3 Alfa Romeo P3, some of the most successful racers of its time.

James Douglas Muir "Jay" Leno /ˈlɛnoʊ/ (born April 28, 1950) is an American stand-up comedian and television host.
From 1992 to 2009, Leno was the host of NBC's The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. Beginning in September 2009, Leno started a primetime talk show, titled The Jay Leno Show, which aired weeknights at 10:00 p.m. (Eastern Time, UTC-5), also on NBC. After The Jay Leno Show was canceled in January 2010 amid a host controversy, Leno returned to host The Tonight Show with Jay Leno on March 1, 2010.
James "Jay" Leno was born in New Rochelle, New York, in 1950. His mother, Catherine (née Muir; 1911–1993), a homemaker, was born in Greenock, Scotland, and came to the United States at age 11. Leno's father, Angelo (1910–1994), who worked as an insurance salesman, was born in New York to immigrants from Flumeri, Italy. Leno grew up in Andover, Massachusetts, and although his high school guidance counselor recommended that he drop out of school, he later obtained a Bachelor's degree in speech therapy from Emerson College, where he started a comedy club in 1973. Leno's siblings include his late older brother, Patrick, who was a Vietnam veteran and a lawyer.

Had the James Bond series been set in Italy, this would be his car. Instead, this Lancia Flaminia Super Sport Zagato belongs to Mr. Robert Giaimo. And you could be excused for wondering about the powerplant, pace, and reliability. To answer your questions: a 2.8L V6 with triple two-barrel Weber carbs, it can cruise comfortably at 100mph like any grand tourer worth anything, and fairly good now that it has a braided throttle cable. But if you're asking those questions your missing the point. The Flaminia Super Sport, bodied by Zagato, is simply about style. Simply, being the operative word because the shape is so pure and unadorned. The Lancia was blessed with taut lines, classic proportions, and is mercifully devoid of any extraneous details. The driving experience is undiluted as well and Robert does drive it. He loves the solid mechanical connection between the gear lever and transaxle (yes, the transmission is mated to the differential), between the tires and steering wheel. Even though he also has a modern sports car that he enjoys, the sensory feedback the Lancia creates and attention required to drive it enhance the experience. But it really always comes back to the Flaminia's style, "You can intellectualize about it. But it just hits you in the stomach - it has soul." We couldn't agree more. Imagine yourself in Lancia’s position in the early 1980s. Your Stratos has recently won three consecutive World Rally Championships (1974-76) but you can see the writing on the wall, writing which reads “all-wheel-drive.” How do you build on this past success and continue to be competitive in the new decade? For Lancia, the answer was the 037, which would ultimately become, in 1983, the last rear-wheel-drive car to win the WRC Manufacturers' Championship before AWD competitors like the Audi Quattro and Peugeot 205 T16 completely changed the sport forever. New Lancia Stratos Sound!
I have filmed the magnificent 2010 Lancia Stratos, a one-off supercar made to celebrate the old glorious Lancia Stratos. The car has been commissioned by Michael Stoschek and developed by Pininfarina. The base used to build the car was the Ferrari 430 Scuderia, including many mechanical components such as the chassis, gearbox and the 4.3L V8 engine tuned up to 532bhp. The New Stratos weighs 1,247 kg (2,749 lb) and is claimed to accelerate to 62 mph in 3.3 seconds and on to a top speed close to 200 mph (320 km/h). While shorter than its donor car, the New Stratos is a little larger than the original Stratos, with a length of 4,181 mm (164.61 in), 1,971 mm (77.60 in) wide and 1,240 mm (48.82 in) tall. Ryan travels to a special garage in the north island of New Zealand tailoring to reconstructed Lancias. The home of the Carters' houses the company 'Carteroni', a business meeting the needs of Lancia enthusiasts by either supplying parts or rebuilding complete cars. The Carters' latest project is a Lancia 037 Group B rally car recreation. Ryan shows up with two weeks remaining on the build. He spends some time helping Allan Carter put the finishing touches on the car, and ultimately gets to drive an icon of the Group B rally era. Imagine yourself in Lancia’s position in the early 1980s. Your Stratos has recently won three consecutive World Rally Championships (1974-76) but you can see the writing on the wall, writing which reads “all-wheel-drive.” How do you build on this past success and continue to be competitive in the new decade? For Lancia, the answer was the 037, which would ultimately become, in 1983, the last rear-wheel-drive car to win the WRC Manufacturers' Championship before AWD competitors like the Audi Quattro and Peugeot 205 T16 completely changed the sport forever.
To compete in Group B events, Lancia was obliged to meet homologation rules by producing 200 street versions of the 037. While visually striking and invigorating to drive, the 037 Stradale remains, at heart, a race car and is thus anything but comfortable. This, however, is precisely what appeals to owner Philip Toledano, who grew up watching Lancia–more specifically, the Stratos and 037–dominate European rally racing.
“It’s not like [the 037] was just a sports car designed for people who wanted to go fast,” says Phil. “This was designed for a purpose, and I love things that were designed specifically for a purpose, like a tool–except it's a fast tool that scares the crap out of you.”
The interior of the 037 Stradale belies the car’s racing heritage: the dash contains a circuit board, conveniently located for periodic resets by the navigator; a navigator’s light stands at the ready; and the oil temperature gauge is located on the far right side of the dash, in front of the navigator’s seat. The 037's exterior is similarly eye-catching. Sporting a Pininfarina body and a 2.0 liter, supercharged Abarth engine that, as Phil puts it, makes Star Wars-like noises as he revs through the gears, the car attracts onlookers wherever it goes.
Usually, however, this 037 is but a screaming red blur, leaving those onlookers little time to realize what they’ve just seen.

Had the James Bond series been set in Italy, this would be his car. Instead, this Lancia Flaminia Super Sport Zagato belongs to Mr. Robert Giaimo. And you could be excused for wondering about the powerplant, pace, and reliability. To answer your questions: a 2.8L V6 with triple two-barrel Weber carbs, it can cruise comfortably at 100mph like any grand tourer worth anything, and fairly good now that it has a braided throttle cable. But if you're asking those questions your missing the point.
The Flaminia Super Sport, bodied by Zagato, is simply about style. Simply, being the operative word because the shape is so pure and unadorned. The Lancia was blessed with taut lines, classic proportions, and is mercifully devoid of any extraneous details. The driving experience is undiluted as well and Robert does drive it.
He loves the solid mechanical connection between the gear lever and transaxle (yes, the transmission is mated to the differential), between the tires and steering wheel. Even though he also has a modern sports car that he enjoys, the sensory feedback the Lancia creates and attention required to drive it enhance the experience.
But it really always comes back to the Flaminia's style, "You can intellectualize about it. But it just hits you in the stomach - it has soul." We couldn't agree more.

I have filmed the magnificent 2010 Lancia Stratos, a one-off supercar made to celebrate the old glorious Lancia Stratos. The car has been commissioned by Michael Stoschek and developed by Pininfarina. The base used to build the car was the Ferrari 430 Scuderia, including many mechanical components such as the chassis, gearbox and the 4.3L V8 engine tuned up to 532bhp.
The New Stratos weighs 1,247 kg (2,749 lb) and is claimed to accelerate to 62 mph in 3.3 seconds and on to a top speed close to 200 mph (320 km/h). While shorter than its donor car, the New Stratos is a little larger than the original Stratos, with a length of 4,181 mm (164.61 in), 1,971 mm (77.60 in) wide and 1,240 mm (48.82 in) tall.
