Delta-v (literally "change in velocity"), symbolised as Δv and pronounced delta-vee, as used in spacecraft flight dynamics, is a measure of the impulse that is needed to perform a maneuver such as launch from, or landing on a planet or moon, or in-space orbital maneuver. It is a scalar that has the units of speed. As used in this context, it is not the same as the physical change in velocity of the vehicle.
Delta-v is produced by reaction engines, such as rocket engines and is proportional to the thrust per unit mass, and burn time, and is used to determine the mass of propellant required for the given maneuver through the Tsiolkovsky rocket equation.
For multiple maneuvers, delta-v sums linearly.
For interplanetary missions delta-v is often plotted on a porkchop plot which displays the required mission delta-v as a function of launch date.

The worlds currently largest rocket active has successfully launched with the top secret NROL-37 payload for the United States. The Delta IV Heavy launched from Space Launch Complex 37B at 17:51 UTC, June 11th 2016. This was the 32nd Delta IV launch, and the 9th Delta IV Heavy launch.

This mission, labelled Exploration Flight Test 1 (EFT-1) is unmanned and will test Orion's onboard systems and heat shield for a re-entry from lunar missions. Liftoff occurred at 12:05 UTC, December 5th 2014, Orion will separate from the second stage at around 3 hours into flight before re-entering Earth's atmosphere and splashing down in the Pacific Ocean. Launch was delayed from December 4th due to ground winds, and then problems with fill and drain valves on the Delta IV rocket.
