'Thrust - Super Sonic Car' which is also called as 'Thrust SSC' in short, is the fastest car in the world. This jet propelled car holds the 'World's Fastest land speed record' and became the first car to break the 'Sound Barrier'. The official land-speed record (measured over one mile) is 1,227.985 km/h (763.035 mi/h) (Mach 1.020), set by Andy Green (UK) on 15 October 1997 in the Black Rock Desert, Nevada, USA.
Although Thrust SSC is the first car to break the sound barrier, it is alleged that Budweiser Rocket Car, driven by Stan Barrett (US), reached a speed of 1,190.377 km/h (739.666 mi/h) at Edwards Air Force Base, California, USA, on 17 December 17 1979. However, the published speed of Mach 1.0106 was not officially sanctioned by the USAF, as the Digital Instrument Radar was not calibrated or certified. The radar information was not generated using the vehicle directly but by an operator aiming aiming a dish using a TV screen.
The car is powered by two Rolls-Royce Spey 202 jet engines which generate 222 kN (50,000 lb) of thrust.

Thrust SSC Supersonic Car - Historic Archive Footage of the Final Run 66. View from the Live Cockpit Camera with Supersonic Driver - Wing Commander Andy Green, OBE, on Black Rock Desert - Nevada, USA. Time - 10:05:00 - Wednesday 15th October 1997 (Local Time). This was the second of 2 supersonic runs (Runs 65 and 66) that together set the World Land Speed Record of 763mph or 1228km/h that still holds today more than 12 years later, and was indeed the FIRST record at supersonic speed!
The Thrust SSC Car is driven by twin Rolls-Royce Spey Engines with 11,000hp and 50,000lbs thrust! They provide the power to achieve 0 to 600mph in just 16 seconds. Run 66 achieved a peak speed of 771mph - Mach 1.02 - and an average speed of 766.609mph over the measured mile! The distance covered during this final run was 14 miles.
In this now historic archive video you'll see the large round "Mach" Speed Meter on the left side of the various dials - as the car pushes through the 700mph barrier you'll see the Mach Speed Hand rapidly move across the dial to an indicated peak supersonic Mach Speed of an estimated Mach 1.02 - with sonic booms being experienced across the desert flats. The main speedometer is just to the right of the Mach Gauge, and during the run you'll see the needle move from the top position around the gauge to the max 771 mph! Wow!

The car was 16.5 m (54 ft) long, 3.7 m (12 ft) wide and weighed 10.5 tons (10.7 t), and the twin engines developed a net thrust of 223 kN (50,000 lbf), a power output of 110,000 bhp (82MW), burning around 18 litres/second (4.0 Imperial gallons/s or 4.8 US gallons/s). Transformed into the usual terms for car mileages based on its maximum speed, the fuel consumption was about 5,500 l/100 km (0.05 mpg-imp; 0.04 mpg-US).

Sound barrier
The sound barrier or sonic barrier is a popular term for the sudden increase in aerodynamic drag and other effects experienced by an aircraft or other object when it approaches supersonic speed. When aircraft first began to be able to reach close to supersonic speed, these effects were seen as constituting a barrier making supersonic speed very difficult or impossible.
In dry air at 20 °C (68 °F), the sound barrier is reached when an object moves at a speed of 343 metres per second (about 767 mph, 1234 km/h or 1,125 ft/s). The term came into use in this sense during World War II, when a number of aircraft started to encounter the effects of compressibility, a number of unrelated aerodynamic effects that "struck" their aircraft, seemingly impeding further acceleration. By the 1950s, new aircraft designs routinely "broke" the sound barrier.
History
Some common whips such as the bullwhip or sparewhip are able to move faster than sound: the tip of the whip breaks the sound barrier and causes a sharp crack—literally a sonic boom.Firearms since the 19th century have generally had a supersonic muzzle velocity.

Run 66 achieved a peak speed of 771mph - Mach 1.02 - and an average speed of 766.609mph over the measured mile! The distance covered during this final run was 14 miles.
In this now historic archive video you'll see the large round "Mach" Speed Meter on the left side of the various dials - as the car pushes through the 700mph barrier you'll see the Mach Speed Hand rapidly move across the dial to an indicated peak supersonic Mach Speed of an estimated Mach 1.02 - with sonic booms being experienced across the desert flats. The main speedometer is just to the right of the Mach Gauge, and during the run you'll see the needle move from the top position around the gauge to the max 771 mph! Wow!

ThrustSSC holds the World Land Speed Record, set on October 15, 1997, when it achieved a speed of 1,228 km/h (763 mph) and became the first land vehicle to officially break the sound barrier, not considering the earlier, unsubstantiated claim of the Budweiser Rocket.
The car was driven by Royal Air Force fighter pilot Squadron Leader Andy Green in the Black Rock Desert in Nevada, United States. It was powered by two afterburning Rolls-Royce Spey turbofan engines, as used in British F-4 Phantom II jet fighters. It is 16.5 m (54 ft) long, 3.7 m (12 ft) wide and weighs 10.5 tons (10.7 t). The twin engines developed a thrust of 223 kN (50,000 lbf) and burned around 4 Imperial gallons per second (18.2 l/s or 4.8 US gallons/s). Transformed into the usual terms for car mileages based on its maximum speed, the fuel consumption was about 5,500 l/100 km or 0.04 mpg U.S.
