Ennis (Irish: Inis, meaning "island") is the county town of County Clare in Ireland. Situated on the River Fergus, it lies north of Limerick and south of Galway. Its name is a shortening of the original Inis Cluain Ramh Fhada ("island of the long rowing meadow").
The town is 19 km (12 mi) from Shannon and Shannon Airport. Geographically located near the mouth of the Fergus estuary, it is now a gateway to the West of Clare via the N85 Western relief road for people travelling from the Limerick and East Clare regions.
The 2006 census indicates that Ennis had a population of 24,253 making it the largest town in Munster and the sixth largest town in Ireland. It is the 11th largest urban centre in the country.
In 2005 Ennis won the Irish Tidy Towns Competition. The town has maintained this high status over the years coming 2nd in 2008, an improvement on the previous year.
Ennis William Cosby (April 15, 1969 – January 16, 1997) was the son of comedian-actor Bill Cosby and Camille Cosby. He was murdered during a mugging.
Several events in the life of Ennis Cosby were intentionally[citation needed] mirrored by the events in the life of his father's fictional son, Theo Huxtable, portrayed by Malcolm Jamal Warner on NBC's The Cosby Show (1984–1992). Both Ennis and Theo had four sisters: two older, two younger. Both had academic problems in middle school and high school. Both were diagnosed with dyslexia and excelled academically in college. Additionally, both sought master's degrees in education from elite colleges in New York City: Ennis at Columbia University, and Theo at New York University.
Similarly, the character Griffin Vesey, portrayed by Doug E. Doug on CBS's Cosby (1996–2000), was a surrogate son to Bill Cosby's character on that series. Griffin eventually became a teacher, as Ennis had aspired to become.[citation needed]
Although he performed on stage in high school, Ennis was not a public figure. He attended Eaglebrook School and graduated from George School, in Newtown, Pennsylvania, and Morehouse College, in Atlanta, Georgia. In 1990 he attended Landmark College.[citation needed]

Cosby has also acted in a number of films.
During the 1980s, Cosby produced and starred in what is considered to be one of the decade's defining sitcoms, The Cosby Show, which aired eight seasons from 1984 to 1992. The sitcom highlighted the experiences and growth of an affluent African-American family. He also produced the spin-off sitcom A Different World, which became second to The Cosby Show in ratings.
