Former Tottenham captain, who has died aged 80, always claimed one of football's most famous images portrayed him as "a bully"
It is still one of the most iconic images in football.
It is August 1966, the first day of the new season, and Dave Mackay - shirt tucked in, sleeves rolled up, hair slicked back - is striding across White Hart Lane's pristine turf, exuding an air of complete menace.
His face contorted in a snarl, his right fist has clamped around the shirt of Leeds United's Billy Bremner, who is holding out his arms in a gesture of submission. In the background, a young and bronzed Terry Venables watches on, his eyes wide with concern, while the referee already has his whistle to his lips.
It is a snapshot not just of a moment in time, but of football's forgotten culture, an age when hard men were precisely that and rough and ready physicality was not just tolerated in the sport, but actively encouraged.
Yet, for all that the picture has become a love letter for a time when hardly a game passed by without a flurry of fisticuffs, the man at the centre of it could not abide it.
Mackay, who passed away on Monday at the age of 80, always maintained that the picture was a grossly unfair representation of his playing style, even if he dealt with all the attention it provoked with typical good grace.
Speaking to the journalist Ian Abrahams five years ago, Mackay said: "The famous picture is one that a lot of football fans like.
"I am into my seventies now and I still get copies of them sent to my house for me to sign, which I do, all of them. While other people like the photograph, I don't because it portrays me as a bully, which I am not and never have been."
In a separate magazine interview, Mackay revealed the reasons behind his volcanic reaction.
He said: “He was a brilliant little player but a dirty little b******. He kicked me in the leg I’d just come back from breaking twice. If he’d kicked the other one, I could have accepted that. But he kicked the broken one and that really annoyed me. I could’ve killed him that day.”
Mackay was probably being unduly harsh on himself - not least because the idea of any player, even one as fearsome as Mackay, "bullying" Billy Bremner seems scarcely credible.
And what of the fall-out from the incident? If it were to happen today, a confrontation between two of the foremost players of their age would provoke Twitter outrage, days of hand-wringing and FA inquiries. But back in 1966, it did not even merit a red card.
"In the end the referee just gave us a talking-to, for which I was relieved," Mackay told Abrahams. "I had got away with it and was so happy, because it maintained my record of never having been sent off. I may have been dirty sometimes, but I never got sent off in my whole life, even as a schoolboy."

He has since been voted Leeds United's greatest player of all time and has been included in the Football League 100 Legends. Bremner is also a member of both the Scotland Football Hall of Fame and the English Football Hall of Fame.
Bremner, a diminutive but hard midfield player, was scouted by Leeds while playing schoolboy football in Scotland and signed for the Elland Road club in 1959, the day after his 17th birthday. He was brought up in the Raploch area of Stirling where he attended the Catholic junior school, St. Mary's. He had previously been rejected by Arsenal and Chelsea for being too small.
He made his first-team debut in 1960 and was a permanent fixture on manager Don Revie's team sheet for more than 15 years thereafter unless injured or suspended. Bremner quickly established himself as an uncompromising player, tough in the tackle and often going beyond the rules to get the better of a skilled opponent - a Sunday Times headline dubbed him as "10st of barbed wire"[1]. But he could play too - he had a stamina to work from one end of the pitch to the other and could pass with precision and timing. He also weighed in with his share of goals, and had an extraordinary ability to score crucial goals in the biggest games, including winners in four major semi-finals.

William John "Billy" Bremner (9 December 1942 – 7 December 1997) was a Scottish professional footballer, most noted for his captaincy of the Leeds United team of the 1960s and 1970s. He has since been voted Leeds United's greatest player of all time and has a statue outside the South East corner of Elland Road. He has also been included in the Football League 100 Legends and is a member of the English Football Hall of Fame. Bremner was voted Footballer Of the Year in 1970, and was also voted into the Scottish Football Hall of Fame as one of its first inductees in 2004,. He is on the Scotland national football team roll of honour due to having won more than 50 caps for Scotland.
Bremner, a diminutive but hard midfield player, was scouted by Leeds while playing schoolboy football in Scotland and signed for the Elland Road club in 1959, the day after his 17th birthday. He was brought up in the Raploch area of Stirling where he attended the Catholic junior school, St. Mary's. Former Tottenham captain, who has died aged 80, always claimed one of football's most famous images portrayed him as "a bully"
It is still one of the most iconic images in football.
It is August 1966, the first day of the new season, and Dave Mackay - shirt tucked in, sleeves rolled up, hair slicked back - is striding across White Hart Lane's pristine turf, exuding an air of complete menace.
His face contorted in a snarl, his right fist has clamped around the shirt of Leeds United's Billy Bremner, who is holding out his arms in a gesture of submission. In the background, a young and bronzed Terry Venables watches on, his eyes wide with concern, while the referee already has his whistle to his lips.
It is a snapshot not just of a moment in time, but of football's forgotten culture, an age when hard men were precisely that and rough and ready physicality was not just tolerated in the sport, but actively encouraged.
Yet, for all that the picture has become a love letter for a time when hardly a game passed by without a flurry of fisticuffs, the man at the centre of it could not abide it.
Mackay, who passed away on Monday at the age of 80, always maintained that the picture was a grossly unfair representation of his playing style, even if he dealt with all the attention it provoked with typical good grace.
Speaking to the journalist Ian Abrahams five years ago, Mackay said: "The famous picture is one that a lot of football fans like.
"I am into my seventies now and I still get copies of them sent to my house for me to sign, which I do, all of them. While other people like the photograph, I don't because it portrays me as a bully, which I am not and never have been."
In a separate magazine interview, Mackay revealed the reasons behind his volcanic reaction.
He said: “He was a brilliant little player but a dirty little b******. He kicked me in the leg I’d just come back from breaking twice. If he’d kicked the other one, I could have accepted that. But he kicked the broken one and that really annoyed me. I could’ve killed him that day.”
Mackay was probably being unduly harsh on himself - not least because the idea of any player, even one as fearsome as Mackay, "bullying" Billy Bremner seems scarcely credible.
And what of the fall-out from the incident? If it were to happen today, a confrontation between two of the foremost players of their age would provoke Twitter outrage, days of hand-wringing and FA inquiries. But back in 1966, it did not even merit a red card.
"In the end the referee just gave us a talking-to, for which I was relieved," Mackay told Abrahams. "I had got away with it and was so happy, because it maintained my record of never having been sent off. I may have been dirty sometimes, but I never got sent off in my whole life, even as a schoolboy."

Bremner is also a member of both the Scotland Football Hall of Fame and the English Football Hall of Fame.
Bremner, a diminutive but hard midfield player, was scouted by Leeds while playing schoolboy football in Scotland and signed for the Elland Road club in 1959, the day after his 17th birthday. He was brought up in the Raploch area of Stirling where he attended the Catholic junior school, St. Mary's. He had previously been rejected by Arsenal and Chelsea for being too small.

Billy left Leeds for Hull City in 1975, after that he went on to Doncaster Rovers, whom he both played, and manager for, and is a legend there, as well as at Leeds.
Doncaster fans laid wreaths at the statue of Billy Bremner on the 19th January 2008 as a tribute to the great man.
In the 80's however, Billy returned to Leeds United, as manager. He took Leeds minutes within the final of the FA Cup (Despite Leeds being in the Second Division), minutes within the top flight, but in the end losing to Charlton in the Play Off Final.
Billy was sacked, and replaced by Howard Wilkinson.
In December 1997, the true King passed away, after suffering a heart attack the day previous to his death.
This sent the Leeds United worldwide fanbase in to deep sadness for their loss.
To the back end of 1999 (towards the new millenium) a statue on the South East Corner at Elland Road was created, in memory of our King. As it was put up, Leeds were top of the Premiership, it was/still a fitting tribute to the man.
A man who means so much to EVERY Leeds United, and Doncaster Rovers fan - Billy Bremner.
