The high walls, electric fences, and private security guards surrounding South Africa's residences and businesses are as inherent to the country's landscape as Table Mountain is to Cape Town. And with good reason — South Africa's 2012-2013 crime statistics were the worst in a decade, with increases in murder, attempted murder, violent armed robbery, and carjackings.
Fear of crime has led to a boom in South Africa's private security industry since apartheid ended 20 years ago. The field's quick expansion is largely a result of continued social and economic inequality, increased violence, and inept police forces.
VICE News traveled to South Africa's mother city Cape Town to look at the lifestyle gap between those who can and cannot afford the luxury of safety.

Yes, there were plays-and-misses early on, South Africa did drop catches and then bullied Rabada to not refer a plumb LBW not given, but West Indies recovered well from those twin strikes by Tahir, who should arguably have been bowling sooner. After Samuels and Ramdin followed the openers back to the pavilion, thanks to Phangiso, Pollard walked in to wield and scored a breezy run-a-ball 67. Bravo proved a worthy partner in a steady partnership that almost steered West Indies home.

I couldn't have written this safari encounter better if it was a movie. I'm absolutely in awe of these beautiful, strong animals, even though some of us had to change our pants after this. We need to stop killing them - take a photo, not a shot. Would you rather be able to experience these creatures or a hunk of ivory? I thought so.

“Beyond the wooden shacks lie ditches and pools of dirty, stagnant water where mosquitoes breed. Two basic toilets serve the whole camp.”
Then he paraphrased comments made to him by his guide, Ernst Roets, the deputy chief executive of the Afrikaans civil society organisation, AfriForum.
“According to Roets there are 80 white squatter camps – many of them bigger than this – in the Pretoria area alone. Across South Africa as a whole he believes there could be as many as 400,000 poor whites in conditions like these.”
In the television report on the story, which was aired on the BBC current affairs programme, The Editors, Simpson spoke of 200,000 whites. “One ugly secret in the new South Africa is white poverty,” he said in a voiceover as a camera followed him picking his way through the shacks. “At least 200,000 whites live in squatter camps like this today.”

Aussie teens Dillan and Hannah will be staying with South African couple Andrew and Charnell de Kock, who believe the key to bringing up angelic kids is through clean living and the strict moral teachings of the Mormon faith.
Andrew imports medical technology, while wife Charnell is a part-time student counselor and special needs teacher. Three of their four children are students while the eldest is a missionary in Uganda. "Our religion isn't just something we go to on Sunday, it's a way of life," says Andrew. "We are trying to live a Christ-like life." And in the de Kock house, this means plenty of rules. "We have rules with internet access, we have rules with behaviour and code of conduct, we have rules with language, we have rules with interaction with people around them, we have rules with chores," says Charnell. "The rules are there for them and for us to function in society and to function as a family." The de Kock kids can only watch PG rated television. Andrew and Charnell also keep a close eye on the music they listen to, the movies they watch and the company they keep. "We monitor their friendships - that's important," says Charnell.
This family has its own 10 point code of conduct, incorporating trust, work and respect. Every child in the de Kock family is expected to strictly abide by this code. "Teenagers have too much freedom," says Andrew. "And as a result I feel that they perhaps are behaving in a way that is unbecoming of decent young men and young women." The de Kocks believe a healthy body is as important as a healthy mind. You won't find any tea, coffee or cola in their house. As a matter of fact, you won't find any caffeinated drinks or foods that are considered addictive. "It's important to fill the body and mind with wholesomeness," says Charnell. Andrew adds, "We'd like to show Hannah and Dillan that happiness can be found by adherence to principals."

South Africa, officially the Republic of South Africa, is a country located at the southern tip of Africa. It is divided into nine provinces and has 2,798 kilometres (1,739 mi) of coastline. To the north of the country lie the neighbouring territories of Namibia, Botswana and Zimbabwe; to the east are Mozambique and Swaziland; while Lesotho is an enclave surrounded by South African territory.
South Africa is multi-ethnic and has diverse cultures and languages. Eleven official languages are recognised in the constitution. Two of these languages are of European origin: South African English and Afrikaans, a language which originated mainly from Dutch that is spoken by the majority of white and Coloured South Africans. Though English is commonly used in public and commercial life, it is only the fifth most-spoken home language. All ethnic and language groups have political representation in the country's constitutional democracy comprising a parliamentary republic; unlike most parliamentary republics, the positions of head of state and head of government are merged in a parliament-dependent President.

Aussie teens Dillan and Hannah will be staying with South African couple Andrew and Charnell de Kock, who believe the key to bringing up angelic kids is through clean living and the strict moral teachings of the Mormon faith. Andrew imports medical technology, while wife Charnell is a part-time student counselor and special needs teacher. The high walls, electric fences, and private security guards surrounding South Africa's residences and businesses are as inherent to the country's landscape as Table Mountain is to Cape Town. And with good reason — South Africa's 2012-2013 crime statistics were the worst in a decade, with increases in murder, attempted murder, violent armed robbery, and carjackings.
Fear of crime has led to a boom in South Africa's private security industry since apartheid ended 20 years ago. The field's quick expansion is largely a result of continued social and economic inequality, increased violence, and inept police forces.
VICE News traveled to South Africa's mother city Cape Town to look at the lifestyle gap between those who can and cannot afford the luxury of safety.

Yes, there were plays-and-misses early on, South Africa did drop catches and then bullied Rabada to not refer a plumb LBW not given, but West Indies recovered well from those twin strikes by Tahir, who should arguably have been bowling sooner. After Samuels and Ramdin followed the openers back to the pavilion, thanks to Phangiso, Pollard walked in to wield and scored a breezy run-a-ball 67. Bravo proved a worthy partner in a steady partnership that almost steered West Indies home.

We need to stop killing them - take a photo, not a shot. Would you rather be able to experience these creatures or a hunk of ivory? I thought so.

“Beyond the wooden shacks lie ditches and pools of dirty, stagnant water where mosquitoes breed. Two basic toilets serve the whole camp.”
Then he paraphrased comments made to him by his guide, Ernst Roets, the deputy chief executive of the Afrikaans civil society organisation, AfriForum.
“According to Roets there are 80 white squatter camps – many of them bigger than this – in the Pretoria area alone. Across South Africa as a whole he believes there could be as many as 400,000 poor whites in conditions like these.”
In the television report on the story, which was aired on the BBC current affairs programme, The Editors, Simpson spoke of 200,000 whites. “One ugly secret in the new South Africa is white poverty,” he said in a voiceover as a camera followed him picking his way through the shacks. “At least 200,000 whites live in squatter camps like this today.”

"The rules are there for them and for us to function in society and to function as a family." The de Kock kids can only watch PG rated television. Andrew and Charnell also keep a close eye on the music they listen to, the movies they watch and the company they keep. "We monitor their friendships - that's important," says Charnell.
This family has its own 10 point code of conduct, incorporating trust, work and respect. Every child in the de Kock family is expected to strictly abide by this code. "Teenagers have too much freedom," says Andrew. "And as a result I feel that they perhaps are behaving in a way that is unbecoming of decent young men and young women." The de Kocks believe a healthy body is as important as a healthy mind. You won't find any tea, coffee or cola in their house. As a matter of fact, you won't find any caffeinated drinks or foods that are considered addictive. "It's important to fill the body and mind with wholesomeness," says Charnell. Andrew adds, "We'd like to show Hannah and Dillan that happiness can be found by adherence to principals."

Jan van Riebeeck's arrival on 6 April 1652 established the first permanent European settlement in South Africa. Cape Town quickly outgrew its original purpose as the first European outpost at the Castle of Good Hope, becoming the economic and cultural hub of the Cape Colony. Until the Witwatersrand Gold Rush and the development of Johannesburg, Cape Town was the largest city in South Africa. Today it is one of the most multicultural cities in the world, reflecting its role as a major destination for immigrants and expatriates[4] to South Africa. South Africa is not only impressive due to its size but also due to its amazing variety of fascinating scenery. Its paradise-like flora and fauna plus its historic and famous landmarks are totally captivating. Johannesburg is a modern metropolis and with around a million and a half inhabitants is the capital of Gauteng Province and the largest city in South Africa. It was founded in 1886 when gold was first discovered at Witwater Beach. Although European influence is obvious in South Africa the first inhabitants of this fascinating country were of course the various indigenous people of Africa and the village of Lesedi around twenty five kilometres south of Johannesburg provides many insights into ancient Africa’s traditions and dances. Lesedi contains four tiny villages that are inhabited by Zulus, Xhosas and members of the smaller Pedi and Basotho tribes. Close to Pilgrim’s Rest is one of the most beautiful landscapes in South Africa, Blyde River Canyon, a spectacular twenty six kilometre long and eight hundred metre deep canyon where erosion caused by the confluence of the Treu and Blyde rivers has created a number of amazing rock formations. With its many craters Moon Valley is evocative of the lunar landscape. This unusual area was formed during a wet period around four hundred and sixty million years ago by the Swakop River that is one of the longest and widest rivers in Namibia. Sol Kesner the young bookkeeper working in the catering industry opened his first hotel in 1964. His business empire became bigger and bigger by selling and buying shares, he was able to make his dream come true by 1980 which has become a dream of ours as well. The exotic world of Sun City has tropical forest and among the trees, orchids bloom. The scent is intoxicating, the colors are damped by the light coming through the leaves among the branches, monkeys and parrots with colorful feathers squeal. In the lakes flamingo's can be seen and water lilies bloom. A flight of exotic birds enjoy the jungle. On the grass of parks delicate peacocks sweep. Realistic statues of the animals of Africa ornament the streets, bridges, corridors and terraces. Friendly zebras, elephants, funny monkeys and more lions watch us everywhere. In the sheltered sea bay with its white sand, you can get a real bath in the waves. It's a world of tales where everything got to be found in unspoiled nature but without its dangers. In this jungle there are no pythons or tigers leveling at us. In the rivers there are no crocodiles and even mosquitoes are exterminated regularly. After driving 181km's out of Johannesburg we started to think we got lost. Rolling our windows down, trying to locate the beat of the party's hart. We followed the “Doef ~ Doef~ ” sound until we arrived at the entrance of a night to remember. We found a great spot under a tree to hide from the HOT sun and hurried to set up the camp so that we could start stomping! The energy was great with a magical lightning and thunder show in the sky at night that hid the stars from us. When Thalia’s set went silent after numerous lightning strikes, everyone went to chill to live drumming accompanied with didgeridoo next to the heat of the bon fire and fire performers.
