VIDEO OF ATTEMPTED DOLLAR GENERAL KIDNAPPING RELEASED.
It was a terrifying moment for a mother and daughter who were shopping at a Dollar General store in Inverness, Florida Tuesday morning.
A man, later identified as Craig Bonello, grabbed the 13-year-old girl and tried to run out of the store with her in his arms. Before reaching the doors, the mother was able to catch up to him and grab her daughter. A "tug-of-war" broke out between the suspect and the mother, and shoppers could hear the two were heard screaming.
Bonello finally let go of the girl and ran out the front door of the Dollar General, just as off-duty Deputy Jonathan Behnen was getting out of his patrol car in the parking lot.
The sheriff's office says Behnen had been to court earlier in the morning and had stopped at the store to grab supplies when he saw Bonello running from the store.
The store manager, who is acquaintances with Dep. Behnen, yelled to him that the man running away had just tried to kidnap a child.
Behnen jumped into action, pulling his patrol car in front of Bonello's vehicle as he tried to leave the parking lot. He then ordered the man out of the car with his weapon in hand. After initially not complying, the man was taken into custody without further incident.
"In my 10 years on the road I have never seen anything like this," said Sgt. Craig Callahan from the scene. "He truly intended to abduct this child right in front of everyone in the store."
The mother and her daughter, although both very rattled, are uninjured.
"Behnen is a bona fide hero today," said Capt. Ricky Grant, who was also on scene. "If it weren't for him, this guy would have gotten away."

Because charges are forthcoming for Bonello, the sheriff's office is not releasing the names of those involved.
"This certainly supports the reason why we let deputies take their vehicles home," added Capt. Grant. "Thank goodness Dep. Behnen was there to catch Bonello before he got away."
The sheriff's office says Bonello, 30, of Inverness, has been arrested several times by the CCSO, the last in February 2016 for trespassing. His other charges were misdemeanors, except for an aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer back in 2009.
The intentions of Bonello as of yet are not known. Detectives will be investigating the incident thoroughly and will be charging Bonello in the near future. Bonello is not listed as a sexual offender or predator.
"This was a chaotic scene with a lot at stake," said Commander Buddy Grant. "Thank goodness the girl's mother jumped into action to prevent this man from kidnapping her daughter. And, thank goodness Dep. Behnen used his training and experience to stop this man from escaping. This is obviously someone who needs to be behind bars. He won't be getting out anytime soon to do this again."

General store
A general store, general merchandise store, general dealer or village shop is a rural or small town store that carries a general line of merchandise. It carries a broad selection of merchandise, sometimes in a small space, where people from the town and surrounding rural areas come to purchase all their general goods. The store carries routine stock and obtains special orders from warehouses. It differs from a convenience store or corner shop in that it will be the main shop for the community rather than a convenient supplement.

VIDEO OF ATTEMPTED DOLLAR GENERAL KIDNAPPING RELEASED.
It was a terrifying moment for a mother and daughter who were shopping at a Dollar General store in Inverness, Florida Tuesday morning.
A man, later identified as Craig Bonello, grabbed the 13-year-old girl and tried to run out of the store with her in his arms. Before reaching the doors, the mother was able to catch up to him and grab her daughter. A "tug-of-war" broke out between the suspect and the mother, and shoppers could hear the two were heard screaming.
Bonello finally let go of the girl and ran out the front door of the Dollar General, just as off-duty Deputy Jonathan Behnen was getting out of his patrol car in the parking lot.
The sheriff's office says Behnen had been to court earlier in the morning and had stopped at the store to grab supplies when he saw Bonello running from the store.
The store manager, who is acquaintances with Dep. Behnen, yelled to him that the man running away had just tried to kidnap a child.
Behnen jumped into action, pulling his patrol car in front of Bonello's vehicle as he tried to leave the parking lot. He then ordered the man out of the car with his weapon in hand. After initially not complying, the man was taken into custody without further incident.
"In my 10 years on the road I have never seen anything like this," said Sgt. Craig Callahan from the scene. "He truly intended to abduct this child right in front of everyone in the store."
The mother and her daughter, although both very rattled, are uninjured.
"Behnen is a bona fide hero today," said Capt. Ricky Grant, who was also on scene. "If it weren't for him, this guy would have gotten away."

Because charges are forthcoming for Bonello, the sheriff's office is not releasing the names of those involved.
"This certainly supports the reason why we let deputies take their vehicles home," added Capt. Grant. "Thank goodness Dep. Behnen was there to catch Bonello before he got away."
The sheriff's office says Bonello, 30, of Inverness, has been arrested several times by the CCSO, the last in February 2016 for trespassing. His other charges were misdemeanors, except for an aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer back in 2009.
The intentions of Bonello as of yet are not known. Detectives will be investigating the incident thoroughly and will be charging Bonello in the near future. Bonello is not listed as a sexual offender or predator.
"This was a chaotic scene with a lot at stake," said Commander Buddy Grant. "Thank goodness the girl's mother jumped into action to prevent this man from kidnapping her daughter. And, thank goodness Dep. Behnen used his training and experience to stop this man from escaping. This is obviously someone who needs to be behind bars. He won't be getting out anytime soon to do this again."
