The British Army is becoming streamlined, as units have begun to receive the new Virtus body armour system.
It is lighter, slimmer and more manoeuvrable than older models and 3rd Battalion The Rifles (3 RIFLES) are some of the first soldiers to receive it.
Ali Gibson joined them as they tried it out on exercise in Wales (above).
Virtus uses the same camouflage as the old Osprey body armour, and the same plates.
However, this is a new and improved soldier. This kit weighs 5kg less, with more optional head and face protection.
Troops can balance the weight of their kit better, and only use the parts relevant to their role.
The system also employs a new quick-release mechanism - a pin positioned on the chest that when pulled releases the entire body kit.

In Belgium's Flanders Fields a team of archaeologists are conducting an historic dig. They are uncovering two World War One trenches -- one Allied, one German. This is where trench warfare began, flourished and died in just four short years. Soon, these historic trenches will be paved over by highways and housing developments. But before the bulldozers arrive, a team of archaeologists have just ten days to find and save the weapons, tools and bones.
Digging up the Trenches is a two-hour special that reveals each stage of trench warfare by focusing on the remarkable finds made by this unique excavation. As each rifle and artifact is unearthed, dramatic re-enactments show how these tools and weapons were used by soldiers 90 years ago. We see how men fired sniper rifles, reeled from artillery, and destroyed enemy machine gun nests. The result is a glimpse into how trenches helped define the progress of the entire war, starting as shallow rifle pits, and evolving to become vast underground fortresses housing thousands of men.
Among the astounding discoveries found by the dig are the bones of four soldiers, believed to have died in the war's first gas attack. The archaeologists also find scores of bullets, live shells, underground shelters, and the scars left by mining tunnels.
Historians and archaeologists at the dig are our guides. As each mud-coated artifact is cleaned off, historians like Peter Barton explain how it was used on this very spot 90 years ago. Archaeologists explain trench warfare tactics as they discover bones and rifles. Dramatic re-enactments show how these same artifacts were once the key to life and death struggles in these same trenches.

As Afghanistan prepares for an election, reporter Sean Smith joins the troops on Operation Panther's Claw. He finds them frustrated at the inexperience and lack of discipline of the Afghan National Army.
Operation Panther's Claw has just begun. Objective: secure a small part of Helmand province, the Taliban heartland, before the Afghan elections. For the Black watch Regiment, they’re facing not only an elusive and powerful foe, but a reluctant Afghan Army. ‘They've searched these in two minutes’ says Captain Brown as the ANA search homes for a Taliban arms cache. Tensions between the two armies are boiling over into open conflict. ‘They are inherently idle’ says Captain Brown. In Babaji the area is still far from safe. Metal detectors pick up Improvised Explosive Devices, the IED's that have killed more British soldiers this year than bullets. ‘All the governments who've been in power till this moment couldn't bring peace’ says an old man ‘It’s even worse now’. The Ministry of defence will, in time, claim Panthers Claw a success - unofficially estimating 230 enemy deaths. Yet after weeks embedded with the Black Watch, Sean Smith saw no evidence of Taliban dead. Operation Panther's Claw cost the lives of 10 British soldiers. It's success will be measured on Thursday, when the country goes to the polls.

An uncredited Anthony Asquith is one of the directors of this WWII film (a joint UK/US production) which aims to explain British culture and character to the newly arrived American soldier. Starting with the ubiquitous pub visit, the film breezes through geography lessons, food and entertainment on the Home Front.
Remarkably the film is not a patronising propaganda piece like so many other similar productions - other than the rather clumsy section on race. This success is down to the genial presence of Burgess 'The Penguin' Meredith as our guide, who always knows when to offer a supporting look or comment to camera. Whilst the British may come across as a little staid, the film explains that after four years of war, "we are not quiet, just weary".

They marched toward the officers representing General George Washington’s Continental Army where their arms, and pride, was to be surrendered. Each soldier wondered how the increasingly victorious and mighty British Army could possibly be sent into ignoble defeat by their very own colonies. Since that day, scholars, military leaders, and historians have studied the victory of a relatively unprofessional army over their far superior foes. The latest installment in this 234 year debate is the center of a lecture and discussion led by Professor Andrew Jackson O’Shaughnessy in the 4th edition of the First Annual Discussions on Military History Roundtables at the U.S. Army Heritage and Education Center (USAHEC). Dr. O’Shaughnessy is joined by a panel including Dr. James Scudieri, Senior Historian at the USAHEC, and Dr. Gregory Urwin, Professor of History at Temple University.
The roundtable discussion centers on the arguments made by O’Shaughnessy in his latest book, The Men Who Lost America: British Leadership, the Revolutionary War and the Fate of the Empire. The book follows the careers and decisions of the primary leaders during the war, from King George III himself to the generals on the front line. How could the British, who captured every major American city throughout the war, lose to the colonial forces? O’Shaughnessy weaves a narrative of political turmoil in London undermining the war effort and the fearsome desperation of the American fighters to outline how each of the primary British actors in this martial saga failed to maintain the holdings of the British Empire.

Gurkha Soldiers have been part of the British Army for almost 200 years, but who are these fearsome Nepalese fighters? "Better to die than be a coward" is the motto of the world-famous Nepalese Gurkha soldiers who are an integral part of the British Army.
The Gurkhas are soldiers from Nepal. Historically, the terms "Gurkha" and "Gorkhali" were synonymous with "Nepali," and derived from the hill town and district of Gorkha from which the Kingdom of Nepal expanded. Legend has it that the name may be traced to the medieval Hindu warrior-saint Guru Gorakhnath who has a historic shrine in Gorkha. Gurkhas are traditionally recruited from various Nepali hill ethnicities, but do not come from a single group or region in the multi-ethnic country.
Although the Gorkhas found in Himachal are mostly from Nepal, there have been reports of non-Nepalese Gorkhas (such as Thai Gorkhas, Naga Gorkhas and Chinese Gorkhas). There are Gurkha military units in the Nepalese, British and the Indian army (Gorkhas) enlisted in Nepal. Although they meet many of the requirements of Article 47 of Protocol I of the Geneva Conventions regarding mercenaries, they are exempt under clauses 47(e)&(f) similar to the French Foreign Legion.
Gurkhas are closely associated with the khukuri, a forward-curving Nepalese knife and have a well known reputation for their fearless military prowess. The former Indian Army Chief of Staff Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw, once stated that "If a man says he is not afraid of dying, he is either lying or is a Gurkha."
