A Melbourne father is facing a slew of traffic charges after allegedly fleeing the scene of a car crash, leaving his 8-year-old son behind.

Police said a 41-year-old Brooklyn man and his son escaped injury in a crash on Chambers Road in Altona North on Saturday night.

It is believed the driver's Jeep flipped on its right hand side after it hit a parked car on the residential road, near the intersection of Blackshaws Road, at 9pm.

One passer-by injured her hand while helping to pull the young boy from the wreckage.

No one was in the parked car at the time of the crash.

"The driver is expected to be charged on summons with low-level drink driving and other traffic offences," a police statement said.

The driver's friends said he had been heading home from a party with his son in the passenger seat when he lost control of the vehicle, the Nine Network reported.

Witnesses told the Nine Network that the driver then fled, leaving his son on a nature strip, before he returned to be arrested at the scene.
