ESA preview 2021
As the world leaves behind the strange and challenging year of 2020, we look towards 2021 with a mixture of relief and expectation. And this is the same at ESA, where we look forward to a brighter and very exciting 2021. This year will see Vega-C making its maiden flight, two ESA astronauts start long-duration missions on board the International Space Station, and BepiColombo and Solar Orbiter continuing their voyages around the Solar System. Also this year, we will say farewell to our current Director General Jan Wörner as his tenure ends, while welcoming into office his successor, Josef Aschbacher.

What Happened To The European Space Agency?
Europe is home to some of the most advanced science and technology in the world, yet the average person is not too familiar with the European Space Agency. It seems like even private space companies like SpaceX and Blue Origin are more well known today. But why? Well, the European Space Agency has always tended to play a background role within space. For instance, they developed Spacelab which was used extensively in the Space Shuttle. Similarly, they have launched a variety of probes and satellites around the earth as well as other planets. Aside from this, the ESA has its own rocket program called the Ariane program which has helped the ESA launch a plethora of their own satellites. This video explains the various feats the ESA has accomplished throughout its lifetime and why the ESA is ...

Claudie Haigneré is a French doctor, politician, and former astronaut with the Centre national d'études Spatiales (CNES for short) and the European Space Agency, and Ersilia Scarpetta, who has worked with the ESA since 1991, and is currently the space agency’s Chief Diversity Officer.
They discuss their passion for space, research, STEM, and diversity; the story of their careers, their views of the future of ESA and space exploration, and their thoughts on diversity in the traditionally male-dominated fields of science.

This is ESA
ESA is the only space agency in the world that covers the whole range of space activities. We're exploring our Solar System and unlocking the secrets of the Universe. We're monitoring space and protecting our planetary environment. We're making space accessible and developing the technologies for the future, and we're also using space to benefit citizens and meet future challenges on Earth.
In November 2019, European ministers in charge of space activities will gather at the Space19+ conference in Seville, Spain, to decide on ESA’s vision for the future of Europe in space. Space19+ will be an opportunity to direct Europe’s ‘next generation’ ambitions in space, and address the challenges facing not only the European space sector but also European society as a whole.

Astronaut selection
For the fourth time since 1978, ESA is recruiting new astronauts. Applications open 31 March and close 28 May 2021. Four new members of the European astronaut corps will be selected. Around 20 of the best remaining candidates will also be selected to a newly-established astronaut reserve, whose members may be called upon to fulfil specific missions. ESA’s last call for new astronauts was in 2008, when six candidates were appointed. They were joined by a further one candidate in 2015.

This video explains the various feats the ESA has accomplished throughout its lifetime and why the ESA is so underrated.
