Herman Melville - Typee: A Romance of the South Seas - FULL AudioBook - Adventure Novel
- Typee is Herman Melville's first book, recounting his experiences after having jumped ship in the Marquesas Islands in 1842, and becoming a captive of a cannibal island tribe. It was an immediate success in America and England, and was Melville's most popular work during his lifetime. It was not until the end of the 1930's that it was surpassed in popularity by Moby Dick, more than thirty years after his death. The story provoked harsh criticism for its condemnation of missionary efforts in the Pacific Islands. Many sought to discredit the book, claiming that it was a work of fiction, but this criticism ended when the events it described were corroborated by Melville's fellow castaway, Richard T. Greene, who appears in the story as the character Toby. (Summary by Michael)

Herman Melville
Herman Melville (August 1, 1819 – September 28, 1891) was an American novelist, short story writer, and poet from the American Renaissance period. Most of his writings were published between 1846 and 1857. Best known for his sea adventure Typee (1846) and his whaling novel Moby-Dick (1851), he was almost forgotten during the last thirty years of his life. Melville's writing draws on his experience at sea as a common sailor, exploration of literature and philosophy, and engagement in the contradictions of American society in a period of rapid change. The main characteristic of his style is probably pervasive allusion, reflecting his written sources. Melville's way of adapting what he read for his own new purposes, scholar Stanley T. Williams wrote, "was a transforming power comparable to Shakespeare's".
Born in New York City as the third child of a merchant in French dry-goods, Melville ended his formal education abruptly after his father died in 1832, shortly after bankruptcy left the family in financial straits. Melville briefly became a schoolteacher before he took to sea in 1839. This voyage to Liverpool as a common sailor on a merchant ship became the basis for his fourth book, Redburn (1849). In late December 1840 he signed up aboard the Acushnet for his first whaling voyage, but jumped ship eighteen months later in the Marquesas Islands. His first book, Typee (1846), a fictionalized account of his life among the natives there, became such a success that he worked up a sequel, Omoo (1847). The same year Melville married Elizabeth Knapp Shaw; their four children were born between 1849 and 1855.

In Herman Melvilles 1886 novella, Billy Budd, the title character—a crewman aboard a British naval ship—is hanged for the impulsive murder of a hostile officer. His fellow sailors react to his death in a spirit of forgiveness and communal harmony. Ever since he first read the book, Rolando Jorif had been intrigued by its strange ending.
The sailors seemed to have an appreciation for Billys death that went beyond the understanding of most readers, says Jorif, an assistant professor of English. I found that my own reaction was the same as I had to the end of the Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, in which Douglass, a famed orator, writer and ex-slave, rises to address a potentially hostile white audience to tell his story.
To Jorif, the fact that the conclusions of both works moved him in the same way merited further examination and led to a book published this past summer by Edwin Mellen Press. The title: How Slave Narratives Influenced American Literature: A Source for Herman Melvilles Billy Budd.
Linking sailors with slaves
In his narrative, which was written in 1845, Douglass talks at length about American individuality and the desire of Americans to fulfill themselves in their own lives, Jorif says. That was a main theme of Melvilles as well, and he returned to it in the 1880s when he wrote Billy Budd. He refers often to the slaves condition, compares the sailors lot to that of the slaves, and uses the language of abolitionist literature to speak for the emancipation of the sailor. Early in the novella, Billy, like many sailors, is impressed—or seized and drafted—into service in the British navy, where he is forced to serve the interests of British imperialism, says Jorif.
The slave narrative, whether it applied to the black experience or that of the British naval crewman, was a theme that had preoccupied Melville even in earlier works, Jorif says. The title character of Redburn goes to Liverpool, where he learns that his fathers commercial enterprises are closely linked to the slave trade. That knowledge creates a conflict between father and son so that the essential transfer of experience is infected by the slave trade. And in Moby Dick, Melville likens the whalers on board the Pequod to blacks on a slave ship.
Refuting slavery in any form
Jorif, who was born in Panama, emigrated to the U.S. with his parents in 1954. After a year of college in the late 1960s, he dropped out and spent the next 25 years traveling, reading, and pursuing a career in ballet. He later returned to his studies at Hunter College, earning a B.A. in French and English. How the Slave Narratives Influenced American Literature is derived from his CUNY Graduate School dissertation.
Jorifs book ends with what he characterizes as a total refutation of slavery—and the notion that anyone can willingly enter into slavery to another person. The fact is, he says, slavery is impossible for anyone to accept as long as they have any sense of themselves. Thats what these two men—one historical, the other fictional—argue. Its a point that must still be argued today.

But that told only half the story. “In the Heart of the Sea” reveals the encounter’s harrowing aftermath, as the ship’s surviving crew is pushed to their limits and forced to do the unthinkable to stay alive. Braving storms, starvation, panic and despair, the men will call into question their deepest beliefs, from the value of their lives to the morality of their trade, as their captain searches for direction on the open sea and his first mate still seeks to bring the great whale down.
“In the Heart of the Sea” stars Chris Hemsworth (“The Avengers,” “Rush”) as the vessel’s veteran first mate Owen Chase; Benjamin Walker (“Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter”) as its inexperienced Captain, George Pollard; Cillian Murphy (“The Dark Knight Rises”) as second mate Matthew Joy; and Ben Whishaw (“Skyfall”) as novelist Herman Melville, whose inquiries into the event 30 years later helped bring the story to light.

Howard directed from a screenplay by Charles Leavitt (“Blood Diamond”), story by Charles Leavitt and Rick Jaffa & Amanda Silver (“Rise of the Planet of the Apes”), based on In the Heart of the Sea: The Tragedy of the Whaleship Essex by Nathaniel Philbrick, winner of the 2000 National Book Award for Nonfiction.
The film is produced by Paula Weinstein (“Blood Diamond”), Joe Roth (“Oz the Great and Powerful”), William Ward, Brian Grazer (“J. Edgar”) and Ron Howard. Serving as executive producers are Sarah Bradshaw, Palak Patel, Bruce Berman and David Bergstein. William M. Connor, Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver are co-producers.
The behind-the-scenes creative team includes Oscar-winning director of photography Anthony Dod Mantle (“Slumdog Millionaire,” “Rush”), production designer Mark Tildesley (“The Fifth Estate”), Oscar-winning editor Mike Hill (“Apollo 13,” “Rush”), costume designer Julian Day (“Rush”) and composer Roque Baños (“Evil Dead”).
“In the Heart of the Sea” is a Warner Bros. Pictures presentation, in association with Village Roadshow Pictures, a COTT Productions-Enelmar Productions, A.I.E. co-production, a Roth Films/Spring Creek/Imagine Entertainment Production, in Association with Kia Jam.
