The Doors were an American rock band formed in 1965 in Los Angeles, with vocalist Jim Morrison, keyboardist Ray Manzarek, guitarist Robby Krieger and drummer John Densmore. The band got its name from the title of Aldous Huxley's book The Doors of Perception, which itself was a reference to a quote made by William Blake, "If the doors of perception were cleansed, everything would appear to man as it is, infinite." They were unique and among the most controversial and influential rock acts of the 1960s, mostly because of Morrison's lyrics and charismatic but unpredictable stage persona. After Morrison's death on 3 July 1971 at age 27, the remaining members continued as a trio until disbanding in 1973.
Signing with Elektra Records in 1966, the Doors released eight albums between 1967 and 1971. All but one hit the Top 10 on the Billboard 200 and went platinum or better. Their self-titled debut album (1967) was their first in a series of Top 10 albums in the United States, followed by Strange Days (also 1967), Waiting for the Sun (1968), The Soft Parade (1969), Morrison Hotel (1970), Absolutely Live (1970) and L.A. Woman (1971), with 20 Gold, 14 Platinum, and 5 Multi-Platinum album awards in the United States alone. By the end of 1971, it was reported that the Doors had sold 4,190,457 albums domestically and 7,750,642 singles. The band had three million-selling singles in the U.S. with "Light My Fire", "Hello, I Love You" and "Touch Me". After Morrison's death in 1971, the surviving trio released two albums Other Voices and Full Circle with Manzarek and Krieger sharing lead vocals. The three members also collaborated on the spoken-word recording of Morrison's An American Prayer in 1978 and on the "Orange County Suite" for a 1997 boxed set. Manzarek, Krieger and Densmore reunited in 2000 for an episode of VH1's "Storytellers" and subsequently recorded Stoned Immaculate: The Music of the Doors with a variety of vocalists.
An American may be the pseudonym of:
James Douglas "Jim" Morrison (December 8, 1943 – July 3, 1971) was an American singer, songwriter and poet best remembered as the lead singer of The Doors.
Because of his songwriting, wild personality and performances, he is regarded by critics and fans as one of the most iconic and influential frontmen in rock music history, and because of the dramatic circumstances surrounding his life and death. In the latter part of the 20th century he was one of the popular culture's most rebellious and oft-displayed icons, representing generational gap and youth counterculture. He was also well known for improvising spoken word poetry passages while the band played live. Morrison was ranked number 47 on Rolling Stone's list of the "100 Greatest Singers of All Time", and number 22 on Classic Rock Magazine's "50 Greatest Singers In Rock".Ray Manzarek said that Morrison "embodied hippie counterculture rebellion..." Morrison was sometimes referred to by other monikers, such as "Lizard King" and "King of Orgasmic Rock".
An American Prayer is the ninth and final studio album by The Doors. In 1978, seven years after lead singer Jim Morrison died and five years after the remaining members of the band broke up, Ray Manzarek, Robby Krieger, and John Densmore reunited and recorded backing tracks over Morrison's poetry (originally recorded in 1969 and 1970). Other pieces of music and spoken word recorded by the Doors and Morrison were also used in the audio collage, such as dialogue from Morrison's film HWY: An American Pastoral and snippets from jam sessions.
The album received mixed reviews and still divides critics, yet it has managed a platinum certification in the US. When the album was originally released, longtime Doors' producer Paul Rothchild labeled the album a "rape of Jim Morrison". Rothchild claimed that he had heard all of the reels of master tapes from both the 1969 and the 1970 poetry sessions, insisting that the three remaining Doors failed to realize Morrison's original intent for an audio presentation of the poetry. Morrison himself, prior to leaving for Paris, had approached composer Lalo Schifrin as a possible contributor for the music tracks meant to accompany the poetry, with no participation from any of the other Doors members. In addition, he had developed some conception of the album cover art work by January 1971, and was in correspondence with artist T. E. Breitenbach to design this cover in the form of a triptych (a three-paneled painting with various images embedded in each panel).
A highway is any public road or other public way on land. It is used for major roads, but also includes other public roads and public tracks: It is not an equivalent term to freeway (motorway), or a translation for autobahn, autoroute, etc.
In North American and Australian English, major roads such as controlled-access highways or arterial roads are often state highways (Canada: provincial highways). Other roads may be designated "county highways" in the US and Ontario. These classifications refer to the level of government (state, provincial, county) that maintains the roadway.
In British English, "highway" is primarily a legal term. Everyday use normally implies roads, while the legal use covers any route or path with a public right of access, including footpaths etc.
The term has led to several related derived terms, including highway system, highway code, highway patrol and highwayman.
The term highway exists in distinction to "waterway".
Major highways are often named and numbered by the governments that typically develop and maintain them. Australia's Highway 1 is the longest national highway in the world at over 14,500 km or 9,000 mi and runs almost the entire way around the continent. China has the world's largest network of highways followed closely by the United States of America. Some highways, like the Pan-American Highway or the European routes, span multiple countries. Some major highway routes include ferry services, such as U.S. Route 10, which crosses Lake Michigan.
From the album "An American Prayer" Vocals by Jim Morrison Lyrics: Me and my -ah- mother and father - and a grandmother and a grandfather - were driving through the desert, at dawn, and a truck load of Indian workers had either hit another car, or just - I don't know what happened - but there were Indians scattered all over the highway, bleeding to death. So the car pulls up and stops. That was the first time I tasted fear. I musta' been about four - like a child is like a flower, his head is just floating in the breeze, man. The reaction I get now thinking about it, looking back - is that the souls of the ghosts of those dead Indians...maybe one or two of 'em...were just running around freaking out, and just leaped into my soul. "The Ghost Song" is a song by The Doors, and was released on An American Prayer in 1978, 7 years after Jim Morrison's death in Paris, France. The song is Morrison's poetry recording with the rest of the band's music. Part of the lyrics to the song, with the mention of "Indians scattered on dawn's highway, bleeding", allegedly refers to one of Morrison's childhood experiences, when he and his family were driving down a desert highway and passed a road accident site, where trucks loaded with Indian workers had collided. According to Morrison, during that experience the souls of the dead Native American workers "leapt into his soul and stayed there". The song marks the first creation of new Doors songs, with the overdubbing of music to pre-existing poetry recital tapes by the surviving Doors ...

Jim Morrison's legendary story from the album AN AMERICAN PRAYER and referenced in the song, "Peace Frog," is investigated in the documentary short film. Many people have debated that Morrison either invented the story or embellished the elements of the experience. The film documents an accident from 1947 that perfectly matches Jim Morrison's story. Dawn's Highway, is it a myth or reality? The viewer can decide.

Tuesday, February 25, 1969, the Doors were recording at Sunset Sound. That evening the Doors and their entourage went out to supper together at a local Mexican joint, the Blue Boar, where they stuffed themselves in a private dining room and drank beer and tequila for a couple of hours. After, they returned to the studio, and started jamming. Jim sang Elvis's "Love Me Tender" and, as the band played free from Rock & Blues, started improvising about the death of rock and roll. He kept repeating "Rock is dead," and "Listen, listen, I don't wanna hear no more talk about revolution," as if trying to damn the rock movement as something that was definitely over. "I'm not talking about no revolution," Jim sang. "I'm not talking about no demonstration. I'm talking about...the death of rock and roll...
L.A. Woman is the sixth studio album by The Doors, and the last recorded with lead singer Jim Morrison, who died in July 1971, less than 3 months after the album's release. Its style signified a return to blues, following in the footsteps of Morrison Hotel.Following the departure of their record producer Paul A. Rothchild (who, contrary to popular myth, loved "Riders on the Storm" but dismissed the group's differing style on "Love Her Madly" as "cocktail music")[1] around November 1970, the band fell in to a state of depression and Jim Morrison was obviously bored with Sunset Sound, the studio in which their first two albums were recorded. Bruce Botnick, their engineer, suggested they record at the Doors' workshop. He and the band began production on the album at The Doors Workshop in Los ...

It was not until their second single “Light My Fire” that shot the band up to the top of the Rock ‘n’ Roll world, reaching No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 Singles Chart. To this day, it is still regarded as one of the most popular rock songs ever recorded. Front man Jim Morrison’s poetic lyrics combined with the band’s unique psychedelic rock sound and outrageous stage performances made the Doors one of the most popular bands of their time. We are taken on a journey from the piecing together of the band, right up to the tragic death of Jim Morrison in a Paris bathtub in 1971. Jim Morrison’s legacy lives on to this day through the music of The Doors and this is their story.

During a 1969 concert at The Dinner Key Auditorium in Miami, Morrison attempted to spark a riot in the audience. He failed, but a warrant for his arrest was issued by the Dade County Police department three days later for indecent exposure. By this time the band was on vacation in Jamaica. Eventually, Morrison was convicted of indecent exposure and public profanity. Consequently, many of The Doors' scheduled concerts were canceled.

"I'd like to do a song or a piece of music that's just a pure expression of joy. Pure like a celebration of existence, you know? And like the coming of spring, like a sun rising. Just pure unbounded joy. I don't think we've really done that yet." Jim Morrison

One is the cause
And two is mysterious,
Three is the wisest,
four is so powerful
Five with such kindness,
Six is always in love,
Seven the chariot,
Eight will rule them all!
Nine is a hermit,
Ten is just probable,
Eleven is virtuous,
Twelve’s hanging down a rope!
Thirteen is death and
Fourteen is temperance,
Fifteen the devil,
Sixteen is a tower!
Where did they go,
the numbers of the Lord,
untold?
If I let violence tear up my silence I’ll drown…
Seventeen, there’s much hope,
Yet eighteen can mislead!
Sweet nineteen like the sun
Twenty, the renewal!
Twenty-one is successful,
Zero isn’t just a fool
Pictures of love
And doors to another world!
Where did they go,
the numbers of the Lord,
untold?
