The Iraqi Army is the ground force component of the armed forces of the Republic of Iraq, having been active in various incarnations throughout the 20th century and 21st century.
The Iraqi Army in its modern form was first created by the United Kingdom during the inter-war period of de facto British control of Mandatory Iraq. Following the 2003 invasion of Iraq, the Iraqi Army was rebuilt along American lines with enormous amounts of U.S. military assistance at every level. Because of the Iraqi insurgency that began shortly after the invasion, the Iraqi Army was designed to initially be a counter-insurgency force. With the US withdrawal in December 2011, Iraqi forces have assumed full responsibility for security. A New York Times article suggested that, between 2004 and 2014, the USA had provided the Iraqi Army with $25billion in training and equipment in addition to an even larger sum from the Iraqi treasury.
The threat of war with newly forming Republic of Turkey, which claimed the Ottoman vilayet of Mosul as part of their country, led the British to form the Iraqi Army on 6 January 1921. The Mussa Al-Kadhum Brigade consisted of ex-Iraqi-Ottoman officers, whose barracks were located in Kadhimyah. The United Kingdom provided support and training to the Iraqi Army and the Iraqi Air Force through a small military mission based in Baghdad. U.S. airstrikes in recent days killed an estimated 350 Islamic State fighters held up in the western Iraqi city of Ramadi, an American military spokesman said today, suggesting the extremists lost as much as half of their defending force. Col. Steve Warren, spokesman for the U.S. military command in Baghdad, told reporters at the Pentagon that there had been an estimated 600 to 1,000 Islamic State fighters inside Ramadi, which the extremist group captured in May. Despite this depletion of Islamic State forces, U.S. officials are reluctant to predict how long it will take to reclaim the city, which is the capital of Anbar province and a key to the Iraqi government's hopes of restoring its borders. Defense Secretary Ash Carter, speaking separately today, said Iraqi progress in retaking Ram...

The United States will send hundreds of new troops to Iraq to assist local forces in the fight against the Islamic State militant group. The US Defense Department announced on Wednesday that it will add 615 troops to its forces in Iraq. Defense officials say that the new troops will train and advise Iraqi forces, and provide logistic support in preparation for a major military campaign to retake Mosul. The Iraqi city is the stronghold of the Islamic State militants. This is the third time since April that the US has boosted troops. It brings the number of personnel in Iraq to more than 5,200. The US government considers the recapture of Mosul a near-term goal in the campaign against the militant group. Obama and Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi met in New York this month. They con...
The US and Iraq have agreed on a plan that could send approximately 500 additional US troops to Iraq in the coming days to assist Iraqi forces in the battle to retake Mosul from ISIS. for more details visit : http://layla2.ahmedash.me/news/6532
The US will provide about 600 more troops to Iraq to advise and provide logistical support to the Iraqi Army, Pentagon chief Ash Carter confirmed after a statement by Iraqi PM Haider al-Abadi on the issue. Carter confirmed earlier statements made by US and Iraqi officials. The soldiers will provide logistics and intelligence support for the Iraqi forces to help recapture the city of Mosul from Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL), he said. Department of Defense spokesman Peter Cook told reporters earlier on Wednesday that the additional troops will not spearhead the attack. They are to be deployed in the coming weeks, according to officials. Earlier, the Iraqi leader said in a statement that US President Barack Obama “was consulted on a request from the Iraqi government for a final inc...
Another military mission has seen to a steady increase of American troops on Iraqi soil once again. But this time, U.S. troops are heading to the Middle Eastern country to assist government forces. Over thirteen years after Operation Iraqi Freedom dismantled the regime and army of Saddam Hussein, most U.S. troops in-country serve non-combat roles as advisers. But the increased presence and violence of the Islamic State, centered in Mosul, has led the Pentagon to shore up forces in the region once again. Beginning in June 2014, thousands of American troops have been sent to assist the Iraqi government in patches of hundreds. Now, the troop level has reached 4,647 with another 600 on the way. http://www.nbcnews.com/news/military/why-number-u-s-troops-iraq-s-isis-fight-keeps-n656111?cid=publi...
The Department of Defense is dispatching 600 more U.S. troops to Iraq to help government forces oust ISIS from the city of Mosul, the Pentagon announced Wednesday. The soldiers will provide logistics support for the Iraqi forces and not spearhead the attack, spokesman Peter Cook told reporters. The Iraqi army repelled an ISIS attack on the western city of Hit, killing 40 militants, Iraqi army forces’ chief of Anbar province KasemMohammadi said Sunday. Iraqi troops launched a large-scale offensive against ISIS militants last summer. In December 2015, they drove the terrorists out of the Anbar provincial capital Ramadi, and then recaptured their stronghold in Fallujah. “ISIS attacked the town of Hit, shelled the area with rockets, mines and other weapons. The Iraqi air force and artillery repelled the attack, killing 40 ISIS terrorists," Mohammadiadded.

The Iraqi government troops and the allied Shiite militia on Thursday freed another major city Shargat, a crucial area that has been under ISIL control since 2014. The troops reached the center of the town and captured its public hospital, forcing Islamic State (ISIS) militants to flee out, according to a local official. Iraqi soldiers said they feel motivated when they liberate Shargat. A long convoy of military tanks strolled down roads towards the ISIL territory. Men with machine guns on their shoulders brushed along bright yellow flowers as they walked the path to fight ISIL militants on the ground. The fighting was intense as Iraqi forces loaded and fired rockets of all sizes from short range to long range across the field. Military helicopters were a key part of the offensive...

In 2014, Islamic State militants swept into Western Iraq's Anbar Province, overrunning Iraqi security forces, enslaving minorities, and causing thousands to flee for their lives. The jihadist group captured Iraq’s largest city, Mosul, and the cities of Ramadi and Fallujah, where hundreds of US troops died fighting the Islamic State’s predecessor. Now, two years later, the Iraqi security forces, with help from Iranian-supported Shiite militias and US military advisors and warplanes, are fighting to take back towns and cities in Anbar, one battle at a time. But it’s a difficult task: Anbar has been the crucible of Iraq’s insurgency, and is the country’s Sunni heartland — long marginalized by and hostile to the Shiite-led government in Baghdad. Ruptly will provide LIVE from the outskirts of Fallujah on Tuesday, May 31, as Iraqi armed forces attempt to advance into the city, which was captured by the so-called Islamic State [IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL] in 2014. The military forces of the Iraqi government initially launched the operation to retake the IS-held city of Fallujah on May 23, following an announcement by the Iraqi Prime Minister Haider Al-Abadi. Fallujah, about 40 miles (78 km) west of Baghdad, was the first Iraqi city to be taken by IS in January 2014. Up to 75,000 civilians have been trapped inside the city, caught between the IS and armed forces, including the Iraqi army and allied militias. Iraqi security forces repeated calls for civilians in Fallujah to flee on May 22, but locals say they have been unable to escape. De...
