U.S. airstrikes in recent days killed an estimated 350 Islamic State fighters held up in the western Iraqi city of Ramadi, an American military spokesman said today, suggesting the extremists lost as much as half of their defending force. Col. Steve Warren, spokesman for the U.S. military command in Baghdad, told reporters at the Pentagon that there had been an estimated 600 to 1,000 Islamic State fighters inside Ramadi, which the extremist group captured in May. Despite this depletion of Islamic State forces, U.S. officials are reluctant to predict how long it will take to reclaim the city, which is the capital of Anbar province and a key to the Iraqi government's hopes of restoring its borders.
Defense Secretary Ash Carter, speaking separately today, said Iraqi progress in retaking Ramadi has been disappointingly slow. "I am certain it will fall, and we will assist in the making of it fall," Carter said of Ramadi. He added that the U.S. would be willing to commit U.S. Army Apache attack helicopters to the battle for Ramadi, if the Iraqi government requests it and if it would "make a strategically decisive difference."
Asked about that comment later, Warren said, "Apache helicopters are ready," if Washington and Baghdad give the go-ahead. U.S. officials have frequently expressed frustration with how long it has taken the Iraqi army and other security forces to press an offensive in Ramadi, but in recent days, they have pointed to important battlefield progress. On Tuesday, Iraqi forces seized an Islamic State operations center in the strategic Tamim neighborhood on the outskirts of the city.
With approximately 10,000 troops, including federal police, committed to the fight for Ramadi, the Iraqis vastly outnumber the defenders. Iraqi Maj Gen. Ismail al-Mahlawi, head of military operations in Anbar province, said there are approximately 300 Islamic State fighters trapped in the center of Ramadi, which lies on the Euphrates River.

Iraqi Army
The Iraqi Army is the ground force component of the armed forces of the Republic of Iraq, having been active in various incarnations throughout the 20th century and 21st century.
The Iraqi Army in its modern form was first created by the United Kingdom during the inter-war period of de facto British control of Mandatory Iraq. Following the 2003 invasion of Iraq, the Iraqi Army was rebuilt along American lines with enormous amounts of U.S. military assistance at every level. Because of the Iraqi insurgency that began shortly after the invasion, the Iraqi Army was designed to initially be a counter-insurgency force. With the US withdrawal in December 2011, Iraqi forces have assumed full responsibility for security. A New York Times article suggested that, between 2004 and 2014, the USA had provided the Iraqi Army with $25billion in training and equipment in addition to an even larger sum from the Iraqi treasury.
History
The threat of war with newly forming Republic of Turkey, which claimed the Ottoman vilayet of Mosul as part of their country, led the British to form the Iraqi Army on 6 January 1921. The Mussa Al-Kadhum Brigade consisted of ex-Iraqi-Ottoman officers, whose barracks were located in Kadhimyah. The United Kingdom provided support and training to the Iraqi Army and the Iraqi Air Force through a small military mission based in Baghdad. Iraqi Army Day celebrates the soldiers that fight for Iraq.

U.S. airstrikes in recent days killed an estimated 350 Islamic State fighters held up in the western Iraqi city of Ramadi, an American military spokesman said today, suggesting the extremists lost as much as half of their defending force. Col. Steve Warren, spokesman for the U.S. military command in Baghdad, told reporters at the Pentagon that there had been an estimated 600 to 1,000 Islamic State fighters inside Ramadi, which the extremist group captured in May. Despite this depletion of Islamic State forces, U.S. officials are reluctant to predict how long it will take to reclaim the city, which is the capital of Anbar province and a key to the Iraqi government's hopes of restoring its borders.
Defense Secretary Ash Carter, speaking separately today, said Iraqi progress in retaking Ramadi has been disappointingly slow. "I am certain it will fall, and we will assist in the making of it fall," Carter said of Ramadi. He added that the U.S. would be willing to commit U.S. Army Apache attack helicopters to the battle for Ramadi, if the Iraqi government requests it and if it would "make a strategically decisive difference."
Asked about that comment later, Warren said, "Apache helicopters are ready," if Washington and Baghdad give the go-ahead. U.S. officials have frequently expressed frustration with how long it has taken the Iraqi army and other security forces to press an offensive in Ramadi, but in recent days, they have pointed to important battlefield progress. On Tuesday, Iraqi forces seized an Islamic State operations center in the strategic Tamim neighborhood on the outskirts of the city.
With approximately 10,000 troops, including federal police, committed to the fight for Ramadi, the Iraqis vastly outnumber the defenders. Iraqi Maj Gen. Ismail al-Mahlawi, head of military operations in Anbar province, said there are approximately 300 Islamic State fighters trapped in the center of Ramadi, which lies on the Euphrates River.

Earlier, the Iraqi leader said in a statement that US President Barack Obama “was consulted on a request from the Iraqi government for a final increase in the number of trainers and advisers under the umbrella of the international coalition in Iraq.”The statement came as Iraqi forces prepared to storm the IS stronghold which has been held by the militant group since 2014. US and Iraqi officials say the operation is due to take place mid-October.
The area around Mosul, the second-largest city in Iraq and one of the key bases of IS operations outside Syria, has been gradually under attack over the last few months. With Kurdish Peshmerga forces having retaken much territory in the north and east, and the Iraqi government together with Iranian-backed Shia militias advancing from the south, Mosul is effectively surrounded except for a supply line linking it to Tal Afar in the west.
The Peshmerga have also said they are willing to take part in the offensive.
“The Peshmerga are ready for the operation and waiting for the Iraqi army to be ready as well, since the offensive will be jointly launched, with support from the US-led coalition,” a Peshmerga commander told Kurdish news agency Rudaw.
The United States currently has 4,565 troops in Iraq as part of a coalition against IS that offers training and advice to the Iraqi army as well as air support to the Iraqis and the Kurdish Peshmerga fighters.

Earlier, the Iraqi leader said in a statement that US President Barack Obama “was consulted on a request from the Iraqi government for a final increase in the number of trainers and advisers under the umbrella of the international coalition in Iraq.”The statement came as Iraqi forces prepared to storm the IS stronghold which has been held by the militant group since 2014. US and Iraqi officials say the operation is due to take place mid-October.
The area around Mosul, the second-largest city in Iraq and one of the key bases of IS operations outside Syria, has been gradually under attack over the last few months. With Kurdish Peshmerga forces having retaken much territory in the north and east, and the Iraqi government together with Iranian-backed Shia militias advancing from the south, Mosul is effectively surrounded except for a supply line linking it to Tal Afar in the west.
The Peshmerga have also said they are willing to take part in the offensive.
“The Peshmerga are ready for the operation and waiting for the Iraqi army to be ready as well, since the offensive will be jointly launched, with support from the US-led coalition,” a Peshmerga commander told Kurdish news agency Rudaw.
The United States currently has 4,565 troops in Iraq as part of a coalition against IS that offers training and advice to the Iraqi army as well as air support to the Iraqis and the Kurdish Peshmerga fighters.

The Iraqi government troops and the allied Shiite militia on Thursday freed another major city Shargat, a crucial area that has been under ISIL control since 2014.
The troops reached the center of the town and captured its public hospital, forcing Islamic State (ISIS) militants to flee out, according to a local official.
Iraqi soldiers said they feel motivated when they liberate Shargat.
A long convoy of military tanks strolled down roads towards the ISIL territory. Men with machine guns on their shoulders brushed along bright yellow flowers as they walked the path to fight ISIL militants on the ground.
The fighting was intense as Iraqi forces loaded and fired rockets of all sizes from short range to long range across the field. Military helicopters were a key part of the offensive as they attacked from the skies.
"We now have two of their cars, this car and that Hummer car; I captured them from ISIL. We also destroyed a suicide car; it was a truck and they had completely rigged it with explosives," said an Iraqi soldier.
"We are very well prepared in every possible way, and our morale is very high, and I am sending my message from here to ISIL. We are chasing you, you will have nowhere to escape," said another Iraqi soldier.

The video shows Iraqi forces in heavy clashes, fighting and firefights during intense combat action in and outside the town during the recent Iraqi assault in order to capture Fallujah from ISIS fighters.
The offensive was a full sucess and Iraqi troops managed it to gain back the control over Fallujah after months of fighting.
The Battle of Fallujah (2016), also referred to as Third Battle of Fallujah,[ or Fallujah offensive (2016), code-named Operation Breaking Terrorism (Arabic: عملية كسر الإرهاب) by the Iraqi government, was a military operation against ISIL launched to capture the city of Fallujah and its suburbs, located about 69 kilometers (40 miles) west of the Iraqi capital Baghdad. The operation began on 22 May 2016, three months after the Iraqi forces had started the total siege of Fallujah. On 26 June, Iraqi forces recaptured the city of Fallujah, before recapturing the remaining pocket of ISIS resistance in Fallujah's western outskirts two days later.
Fallujah was the first city seized by ISIS in Iraq in January 2014. Iraqi forces completely surrounded the western city after they recaptured Ramadi in February 2016. ISIS militants prevented people from leaving the city.
Fallujah is considered tohave been the second most important stronghold of ISIS in Iraq, after Mosul.
The defeat of the Islamic State in this region can be seen as a major defeat for the group.

In 2014, Islamic State militants swept into Western Iraq's Anbar Province, overrunning Iraqi security forces, enslaving minorities, and causing thousands to flee for their lives.
The jihadist group captured Iraq’s largest city, Mosul, and the cities of Ramadi and Fallujah, where hundreds of US troops died fighting the Islamic State’s predecessor.
Now, two years later, the Iraqi security forces, with help from Iranian-supported Shiite militias and US military advisors and warplanes, are fighting to take back towns and cities in Anbar, one battle at a time.
But it’s a difficult task: Anbar has been the crucible of Iraq’s insurgency, and is the country’s Sunni heartland — long marginalized by and hostile to the Shiite-led government in Baghdad.

The military forces of the Iraqi government initially launched the operation to retake the IS-held city of Fallujah on May 23, following an announcement by the Iraqi Prime Minister Haider Al-Abadi.
Fallujah, about 40 miles (78 km) west of Baghdad, was the first Iraqi city to be taken by IS in January 2014. Up to 75,000 civilians have been trapped inside the city, caught between the IS and armed forces, including the Iraqi army and allied militias.
Iraqi security forces repeated calls for civilians in Fallujah to flee on May 22, but locals say they have been unable to escape. Despite a score of territorial defeats, the IS still controls large swathes of Iraqi territory in the country's north and west, including its second largest city of Mosul.
