Louis IX of France
Louis IX (25 April 1214 – 25 August 1270), commonly known as Saint Louis, was a Capetian King of France who reigned from 1226 until his death. Louis was crowned in Reims at the age of 12, following the death of his father Louis VIII the Lion, although his mother, Blanche of Castile, ruled the kingdom until he reached maturity. During Louis's childhood, Blanche dealt with the opposition of rebellious vassals and put an end to the Albigensian crusade which had started 20 years earlier.
As an adult, Louis IX faced recurring conflicts with some of the most powerful nobles, such as Hugh X of Lusignan and Peter of Dreux. Simultaneously, Henry III of England tried to restore his continental possessions, but was defeated at the battle of Taillebourg. His reign saw the annexation of several provinces, notably Normandy, Maine and Provence.
Louis IX was a reformer and developed French royal justice, in which the king is the supreme judge to whom anyone is able to appeal to seek the amendment of a judgment. He banned trials by ordeal, tried to prevent the private wars that were plaguing the country and introduced the presumption of innocence in criminal procedure. To enforce the correct application of this new legal system, Louis IX created provosts and bailiffs.

King Of...
King Of... was a television comedy talk show made by Big Talk Productions for Channel 4. It was first broadcast on 17 June 2011 and was hosted by Claudia Winkleman. The show featured two celebrity guests per episode and a studio audience. The guests discussed what is the 'king of' various categories.
On 24 June 2011, Channel 4 announced that King Of... was to be cut short due to Winkleman's pregnancy. The final 2 episodes, with Ruby Wax & Johnny Vegas and Billie Piper, were not recorded.

The history of the San Luis Rey area reflects five periods of occupation: Luiseno Indian, Spanish Mission, Mexican Secularization, American Military, and Twentieth Century Restoration. Construction of the present Mission church began in 1811 and was completed in 1815. The design is cruciform with the dimensions measuring 30' high, 165' long and 27' wide. The Château d’Angers (Loire Valley) The Château d’Angers, construction of which began in 1230 under (Saint) Louis IX, remained the visible seat of power for the Angevin kings throughout the medieval era. Although the English never beseiged the structure, it nevertheless functioned as a place of retreat during the Hundred Years’ War (1337-1453). Two entrances, complete with draw-bridges, allow for access. With the advent of seige cannon and similar technology châteaux like this one became unnecessary. The most striking feature on the exterior of the Château d’Angers is its series of seventeen towers. Work on these was finally completed in 1240.

Très pieux et souhaitant conduire ses sujets vers le Salut, il décide de punir le blasphème, les jeux d'argent, les prêts à intérêts et la prostitution ; il se procure des reliques du Christ pour lesquelles il fait construire la Sainte-Chapelle ; il tente également de convertir de gré ou de force les Juifs de France. À cette fin il finit par leur imposer diverses mesures, dont le port de la rouelle et le brûlement du Talmud.
Conformément à son vœu prononcé à la suite d'une grave maladie, puis confirmé à la suite d'une guérison qu'il considère comme miraculeuse, Saint Louis part se battre avec ses frères Robert d'Artois, Alphonse de Poitiers et Charles d'Anjou, tout d'abord en Égypte lors de la septième croisade, puis en Tunisie lors de la huitième croisade, au cours de laquelle il meurt de la dysenterie. Aujourd'hui vu comme un monarque ayant offert à la France un renouveau économique, intellectuel et artistique, il est considéré comme l'un des trois grands Capétiens directs avec son grand-père Philippe Auguste et son petit-fils Philippe IV le Bel.
Canonisé le 11 août 1297 sous le nom de saint Louis de France par le pape Boniface VIII, sa fête liturgique est fixée au jour anniversaire de sa mort, c'est à dire le 25 août.

MAY 17, 2011: This is a happy birthday video that works on numerous levels, designed as a "thank you" to all the well wishers who sent me regards today on facebook and through other communication avenues. As it is currently still my b-day while this puppy uploads and converts, we'll use it as the starting point. But wait! There's more... That's why it's a starting point.
WARNING: This is like Jolio's Inferno, comedy trumping divine, but with a whole lotta levels going on here. We can hit one now and still be in the present tense, and maybe back in time for bed. We're just getting started, so fairly warned, be thee, says I.

Level#1: While on facebook earlier today, I went looking for a "birthday song" to post on my profile page and tried to locate the song "Happy Birthday to Me". It was written and recorded in the early 1990s by an old favorite band of mine called CRACKER (the much longer running follow-up to the indie rock forefathers in Camper Van Beethoven). All I could find through YouTube and other pages were some live recordings taken by cameraphone, but not the actual studio version of the song. Then I remembered a key piece of information...
Level#2: I actually have my own live video recording of CRACKER performing this song, as I kinda do this sort of thing with a camera from time to time, "fishing trips" if you will. The recording was from way back in 2006 at a place east of Los Angeles called "Pioneertown". Every year, apparently, Cracker and a reformed Camper Van Beethoven get together in early September and put on a multi-night "Campout" with their musician friends and those in their loyal fan base who can make the trip. With the release of their 2006 album "Greenland", CRACKER invited such guests as They set up a stage outside in the desert, play well into the night, have fun, and generally don't give a crap about anything except playing music and having fun while doing it... and taking care not to start fires, of course.
Level#3: Pioneertown is actually an abandoned television and movie set for old westerns filmed back in the 50s, but has been turned into bit of a detour attraction on the way to Joshua Tree National Park. There's a bar and hotel called "Pappy & Harriet's", some places to camp out, a bowling alley, and not much else except desert and cactus plants. It''s basically a Ghost Town of a Fake Town that seems to come out of a Louis L'Amour novel, and trippy as hell. It's the kind of place where the legend of Doug Flynn - my old man, a who passed in 2008 - would've had a blast, and I remember wondering briefly if his health would ever allow him to make such a trip. At the time, I could easily imagine the old wild west coast fisherman shooting the breeze with the bar patrons, tellin' ridiculous stories and bad jokes, then singing few songs for the people. Maybe he found a way to make the trip after all, and is down there right now playing tricks on the locals. I wouldn't put it past him.
Level#4: I went down to L.A. early in the morning on Friday, September 8, 2006 to meet with Mark Bolas, a professor at USC's School of Cinematic Arts for an interview regarding the school's Interactive Media Division. Once completed, I then headed over to Pioneertown to get some video for a "remote video production" prototype (sound familiar?) that I was working on based around the new video capabilities in the iPod 5G. I was using the iPod as a key "cultural icon" in the class I was teaching that fall (incidentally called "Cultural Icons and Popular Art") at the School of Interactive Arts & Technology (SIAT). This was work that pretty much followed straight out of the stuff in my thesis from earlier in the year.
Level#5: The project was designed to spur in-class discussion around the future of the iPod device as a popular music and video playing technology. Specifically, the idea was to consider what happens once the iPod inevitably became network enabled (i.e. the iPhone), in particular the use of video in such networked devices, as YouTube was still gathering steam and Facetime still a network-hogging pipe dream. Regardless, even back then I was trying to wrap my head around the I felt was on its way, not just in terms of networked video distribution, but remote collaboration on video-based projects. So while I was down in L.A. the plan was to try to get some video from September 9 live music performance by CRACKER at Pioneertown, do a quick edit of it, then send it over FTP back to the SIAT ca

Founded in 1798 by Padre Fermin Francisco de Lasuen, successor to Padre Junipero Serra, the Mission was named after St. Louis IX, King of France, who lived during the 13th century. The history of the San Luis Rey area reflects five periods of occupation: Luiseno Indian, Spanish Mission, Mexican Secularization, American Military, and Twentieth Century Restoration.
Construction of the present Mission church began in 1811 and was completed in 1815. The design is cruciform with the dimensions measuring 30' high, 165' long and 27' wide. The solitary bell tower, which is the cornerstone to the entire mission quadrangle, is 75' high. Adobe, lime plaster, wooden timbers, fired clay bricks, and roof tiles comprise the primary building materials. The architecture is Spanish Colonial combining Baroque and Classical styles with Moorish influences.
PRESENT - The church, a National Historic Landmark, is open daily to visitors via the museum, which oversees its restoration and the care of its collections. Although painted over through the years, the decorative designs, taken from textiles and patterns in books, are original. The church at San Luis Rey is recognized as the most unique and one of the most beautiful in the mission chain. It is the largest of the 21 California missions and the only one adorned with a wooden dome and cupola. Unique also to San Luis Rey are the side altars and the Madonna Chapel which originally served as a mortuary chapel.

The Château d’Angers (Loire Valley)
The Château d’Angers (Loire Valley) The Château d’Angers, construction of which began in 1230 under (Saint) Louis IX, remained the visible seat of power for the Angevin kings throughout the medieval era. Although the English never beseiged the structure, it nevertheless functioned as a place of retreat during the Hundred Years’ War (1337-1453). Two entrances, complete with draw-bridges, allow for access. With the advent of seige cannon and similar technology châteaux like this one became unnecessary. The most striking feature on the exterior of the Château d’Angers is its series of seventeen towers. Work on these was finally completed in 1240.

Louis IX est un roi réformateur qui veut léguer un royaume dont les sujets seront soumis à un pouvoir juste ; il renouvelle la « Quarantaine-le-roi », introduit dans le pays des baillis et des prévôts, ordonne la présomption d'innocence, interdit l'ordalie et institue la supplicatio, consistant à pouvoir faire appel au roi afin de solliciter l'amendement d'un jugement. Offrant aux Français une monnaie unique, il est l'instigateur des institutions qui deviendront le Parlement et la Cour des Comptes.
Très pieux et souhaitant conduire ses sujets vers le Salut, il décide de punir le blasphème, les jeux d'argent, les prêts à intérêts et la prostitution ; il se procure des reliques du Christ pour lesquelles il fait construire la Sainte-Chapelle ; il tente également de convertir de gré ou de force les Juifs de France. À cette fin il finit par leur imposer diverses mesures, dont le port de la rouelle et le brûlement du Talmud.
Conformément à son vœu prononcé à la suite d'une grave maladie, puis confirmé à la suite d'une guérison qu'il considère comme miraculeuse, Saint Louis part se battre avec ses frères Robert d'Artois, Alphonse de Poitiers et Charles d'Anjou, tout d'abord en Égypte lors de la septième croisade, puis en Tunisie lors de la huitième croisade, au cours de laquelle il meurt de la dysenterie. Louis IX, dit « le Prudhomme », plus connu sous le nom de Saint Louis depuis sa canonisation par l'Église catholique en 1297, est très probablement né à Poissy, le 25 avril 1214, et mort à Tunis le 25 août 1270. Considéré comme un saint de son vivant, il est le 44e roi de France, pays sur lequel il règne pendant plus de 43 ans. Neuvième roi de France issu de la dynastie des Capétiens directs, il est le énième enfant et quatrième fils connu du roi Louis VIII, dit « Louis le Lion » et de la reine Blanche de Castille, de laquelle il reçoit une éducation très stricte et très pieuse durant toute son enfance. Aîné des membres survivants de sa fratrie, il hérite de la couronne à la mort de son père, alors qu'il n'est âgé que de douze ans. Il est alors sacré le 29 novembre 1226 en la cathédrale de Reims, mais c'est la reine mère qui, conformément au testament de Louis VIII, exerce la régence du royaume jusqu'à la majorité du nouveau monarque.
Devenu adulte, Louis IX se soucie de l'extension du domaine royal, auquel il rattache les comtés de Blois, de Chartres et de Sancerre, ou encore la Normandie, le Maine, la Provence et le Languedoc. Mais il ne se contente pas de régler les affaires intérieures : réputé juste et diplomate, il est régulièrement sollicité par les différentes monarchies d'Europe qui font appel à lui en tant que juge. Il mène un règne inspiré des valeurs du christianisme qui contribue à fonder l’idée que les pouvoirs spirituel et politique peuvent être incarnés par un seul homme. Il atténue les excès de la féodalité au profit de la notion de bien commun et développe la justice royale où le souverain apparaît comme « le justicier suprême».
Louis IX est un roi réformateur qui veut léguer un royaume dont les sujets seront soumis à un pouvoir juste ; il renouvelle la « Quarantaine-le-roi », introduit dans le pays des baillis et des prévôts, ordonne la présomption d'innocence, interdit l'ordalie et institue la supplicatio, consistant à pouvoir faire appel au roi afin de solliciter l'amendement d'un jugement. Offrant aux Français une monnaie unique, il est l'instigateur des institutions qui deviendront le Parlement et la Cour des Comptes.
Très pieux et souhaitant conduire ses sujets vers le Salut, il décide de punir le blasphème, les jeux d'argent, les prêts à intérêts et la prostitution ; il se procure des reliques du Christ pour lesquelles il fait construire la Sainte-Chapelle ; il tente également de convertir de gré ou de force les Juifs de France. À cette fin il finit par leur imposer diverses mesures, dont le port de la rouelle et le brûlement du Talmud.
Conformément à son vœu prononcé à la suite d'une grave maladie, puis confirmé à la suite d'une guérison qu'il considère comme miraculeuse, Saint Louis part se battre avec ses frères Robert d'Artois, Alphonse de Poitiers et Charles d'Anjou, tout d'abord en Égypte lors de la septième croisade, puis en Tunisie lors de la huitième croisade, au cours de laquelle il meurt de la dysenterie. It was commissioned by King Louis IX of France to house his collection of Passion Relics, including the Crown of Thorns - one of the most important relics in medieval Christendom. Begun some time after 1239 and consecrated on the 26th of April 1248,[1] the Sainte-Chapelle is considered among the highest achievements of the Rayonnant period of Gothic architecture

As it is currently still my b-day while this puppy uploads and converts, we'll use it as the starting point. But wait! There's more... That's why it's a starting point.
WARNING: This is like Jolio's Inferno, comedy trumping divine, but with a whole lotta levels going on here. We can hit one now and still be in the present tense, and maybe back in time for bed. We're just getting started, so fairly warned, be thee, says I.

Level#1: While on facebook earlier today, I went looking for a "birthday song" to post on my profile page and tried to locate the song "Happy Birthday to Me". It was written and recorded in the early 1990s by an old favorite band of mine called CRACKER (the much longer running follow-up to the indie rock forefathers in Camper Van Beethoven). All I could find through YouTube and other pages were some live recordings taken by cameraphone, but not the actual studio version of the song. Then I remembered a key piece of information...
Level#2: I actually have my own live video recording of CRACKER performing this song, as I kinda do this sort of thing with a camera from time to time, "fishing trips" if you will. The recording was from way back in 2006 at a place east of Los Angeles called "Pioneertown". Every year, apparently, Cracker and a reformed Camper Van Beethoven get together in early September and put on a multi-night "Campout" with their musician friends and those in their loyal fan base who can make the trip. With the release of their 2006 album "Greenland", CRACKER invited such guests as They set up a stage outside in the desert, play well into the night, have fun, and generally don't give a crap about anything except playing music and having fun while doing it... and taking care not to start fires, of course.
Level#3: Pioneertown is actually an abandoned television and movie set for old westerns filmed back in the 50s, but has been turned into bit of a detour attraction on the way to Joshua Tree National Park. There's a bar and hotel called "Pappy & Harriet's", some places to camp out, a bowling alley, and not much else except desert and cactus plants. It''s basically a Ghost Town of a Fake Town that seems to come out of a Louis L'Amour novel, and trippy as hell. It's the kind of place where the legend of Doug Flynn - my old man, a who passed in 2008 - would've had a blast, and I remember wondering briefly if his health would ever allow him to make such a trip. At the time, I could easily imagine the old wild west coast fisherman shooting the breeze with the bar patrons, tellin' ridiculous stories and bad jokes, then singing few songs for the people. Maybe he found a way to make the trip after all, and is down there right now playing tricks on the locals. I wouldn't put it past him.
Level#4: I went down to L.A. early in the morning on Friday, September 8, 2006 to meet with Mark Bolas, a professor at USC's School of Cinematic Arts for an interview regarding the school's Interactive Media Division. Once completed, I then headed over to Pioneertown to get some video for a "remote video production" prototype (sound familiar?) that I was working on based around the new video capabilities in the iPod 5G. I was using the iPod as a key "cultural icon" in the class I was teaching that fall (incidentally called "Cultural Icons and Popular Art") at the School of Interactive Arts & Technology (SIAT). This was work that pretty much followed straight out of the stuff in my thesis from earlier in the year.
Level#5: The project was designed to spur in-class discussion around the future of the iPod device as a popular music and video playing technology. Specifically, the idea was to consider what happens once the iPod inevitably became network enabled (i.e. the iPhone), in particular the use of video in such networked devices, as YouTube was still gathering steam and Facetime still a network-hogging pipe dream. Regardless, even back then I was trying to wrap my head around the I felt was on its way, not just in terms of networked video distribution, but remote collaboration on video-based projects. So while I was down in L.A. the plan was to try to get some video from September 9 live music performance by CRACKER at Pioneertown, do a quick edit of it, then send it over FTP back to the SIAT ca

Level#3: Pioneertown is actually an abandoned television and movie set for old westerns filmed back in the 50s, but has been turned into bit of a detour attraction on the way to Joshua Tree National Park. There's a bar and hotel called "Pappy & Harriet's", some places to camp out, a bowling alley, and not much else except desert and cactus plants. It''s basically a Ghost Town of a Fake Town that seems to come out of a Louis L'Amour novel, and trippy as hell. It's the kind of place where the legend of Doug Flynn - my old man, a who passed in 2008 - would've had a blast, and I remember wondering briefly if his health would ever allow him to make such a trip. At the time, I could easily imagine the old wild west coast fisherman shooting the breeze with the bar patrons, tellin' ridiculous stories and bad jokes, then singing few songs for the people. Maybe he found a way to make the trip after all, and is down there right now playing tricks on the locals. I wouldn't put it past him.
Level#4: I went down to L.A. early in the morning on Friday, September 8, 2006 to meet with Mark Bolas, a professor at USC's School of Cinematic Arts for an interview regarding the school's Interactive Media Division. Once completed, I then headed over to Pioneertown to get some video for a "remote video production" prototype (sound familiar?) that I was working on based around the new video capabilities in the iPod 5G. I was using the iPod as a key "cultural icon" in the class I was teaching that fall (incidentally called "Cultural Icons and Popular Art") at the School of Interactive Arts & Technology (SIAT). This was work that pretty much followed straight out of the stuff in my thesis from earlier in the year.
Level#5: The project was designed to spur in-class discussion around the future of the iPod device as a popular music and video playing technology. Specifically, the idea was to consider what happens once the iPod inevitably became network enabled (i.e. the iPhone), in particular the use of video in such networked devices, as YouTube was still gathering steam and Facetime still a network-hogging pipe dream. Regardless, even back then I was trying to wrap my head around the I felt was on its way, not just in terms of networked video distribution, but remote collaboration on video-based projects. So while I was down in L.A. the plan was to try to get some video from September 9 live music performance by CRACKER at Pioneertown, do a quick edit of it, then send it over FTP back to the SIAT ca

Founded in 1798 by Padre Fermin Francisco de Lasuen, successor to Padre Junipero Serra, the Mission was named after St. Louis IX, King of France, who lived during the 13th century. The history of the San Luis Rey area reflects five periods of occupation: Luiseno Indian, Spanish Mission, Mexican Secularization, American Military, and Twentieth Century Restoration.
Construction of the present Mission church began in 1811 and was completed in 1815. The design is cruciform with the dimensions measuring 30' high, 165' long and 27' wide. The solitary bell tower, which is the cornerstone to the entire mission quadrangle, is 75' high. Adobe, lime plaster, wooden timbers, fired clay bricks, and roof tiles comprise the primary building materials. The architecture is Spanish Colonial combining Baroque and Classical styles with Moorish influences.
PRESENT - The church, a National Historic Landmark, is open daily to visitors via the museum, which oversees its restoration and the care of its collections. Although painted over through the years, the decorative designs, taken from textiles and patterns in books, are original. The church at San Luis Rey is recognized as the most unique and one of the most beautiful in the mission chain. It is the largest of the 21 California missions and the only one adorned with a wooden dome and cupola. Unique also to San Luis Rey are the side altars and the Madonna Chapel which originally served as a mortuary chapel.
