Luxor (/ˈlʌk.sɔːr/ or /ˈlʊk.sɔːr/;Arabic: الأقصر al-Uqṣur ; Egyptian Arabic: Loʔṣor IPA: [ˈloʔsˤoɾ]; Sa'idi Arabic: Logṣor [ˈloɡsˤor], Coptic: ⲛⲏ) is a city in Upper (southern) Egypt and the capital of Luxor Governorate. The population numbers 487,896 (2010 estimate), with an area of approximately 416 square kilometres (161 sq mi). As the site of the Ancient Egyptian city of Thebes, Luxor has frequently been characterized as the "world's greatest open-air museum", as the ruins of the temple complexes at Karnak and Luxor stand within the modern city. Immediately opposite, across the River Nile, lie the monuments, temples and tombs of the West Bank Necropolis, which includes the Valley of the Kings and Valley of the Queens. Thousands of tourists from all around the world arrive annually to visit these monuments, contributing greatly to the economy of the modern city.
The name Luxor comes from the Arabic al-quṣūr (القصور), lit. "the palaces," from the pl. of qaṣr (قصر), which is a loanword from the Latin castrum "fortified camp". (Compare Alcázar of Seville)

Travel video about destination Egypt. Egypt is a land of monumental temples, gigantic pyramids, the River Nile and the mysterious Sphinx: 5000 years of history.Founded by Alexander The Great in 332 B.C., the city of Alexandria is located in the Nile Delta and it was here that Caesar and Mark Anthony fell under Cleopatra’s spell. The Cairo Museum is home to the most extensive collection of Egyptian antiquities, including the golden mask and tomb of Tutankamun. With this movie of our (very well dutch speaking) guide Hassan during our trip to Luxor (27/8/2011) i want to thank him for the way he explained everything to us in sometimes a very funny way and this in very difficult conditions : very hot temperatures (between 40 and 50° C and ramadan (no food and no water). The Temple of Kom Ombo is an unusual double temple in the Egyptian town of Kom Ombo. It stands by the Nile just south of Gebel el-Silsila, between Aswan and Edfu. The building is unique because its 'double' design meant that there were courts, sanctuaries and rooms duplicated for two sets of gods. The southern half of the temple was dedicated to the crocodile god Sobek, god of fertility. Meanwhile, the northern part of the temple was dedicated to the falcon god Horus the Elder. The temple is a typical because everything is perfectly symmetrical along the main axis. The outer enclosure wall is mud brick but the temple itself is built of local sandstone from the quarry at Gebel el-Silsila. The modern visitor enters by the gate on the eastern side of the outer enclosure wall. Much of the ...

For Spring Break 2012 I jumped on a plane and headed to Egypt. My first stop was a three day excursion in Luxor. In this video you will see clips and pictures from my visit to The Valley of the Kings, Hatshepsut Temple, Colossi of Memnon, Karnak Temple, and Luxor Temple. There was no photography allowed in some areas like The Valley of the Kings. Still there was plenty to see. It was an amazing tour provided by Sina Tours. If you have plans to visit Egypt, make sure to travel with them. They provided me with all travel arrangements from the airport to the hotel, entry to all attractions, and all lunches. They pretty much took care of everything. My guide who you will see was also great. He was so personable that it felt like a trip with a good friend than a travel guide. http://sinatou...

In the body, in the mind
I remember all too suddenly
I remember most of all
How I happened once to fall
Fall for her so very suddenly
Yeah
In the heartbeat, in the drum
Manifested, open suddenly
I can touch you like a skin
All around the skin Im in
Grows around you very tenderly
Yeah
In the circle, in the round
Im around you oh so suddenly
Cutting out a disc of moon
Antimatter well be soon
And it matters when youre suddenly
Yeah
In the winter, in the ground
Plant the bones that grow so suddenly
I can touch you like the sun
Touches everyone
Everyone is fading gradually
Yeah
