The Velvet Revolution (Czech: sametová revoluce) or Gentle Revolution (Slovak: nežná revolúcia) was a non-violent transition of power in what was then Czechoslovakia. The period of upheaval and transition took place from November 17 to December 29, 1989. Popular demonstrations against the one-party government of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia combined students and older dissidents. The end result was the end of 41 years of rule in Czechoslovakia, and the subsequent conversion to a parliamentary republic.
On November 17, 1989 (International Students' Day), riot police suppressed a student demonstration in Prague. That event sparked a series of demonstrations from November 19 to late December. By November 20, the number of protesters assembled in Prague had grown from 200,000 the previous day to an estimated 500,000. A two-hour general strike involving all citizens of Czechoslovakia was held on November 27. On November 24, the entire top leadership of the Communist Party, including General Secretary Miloš Jakeš, resigned.

Tori Amos (born Myra Ellen Amos; August 22, 1963) is an American singer-songwriter, pianist and composer. She is a classically trained musician and has a mezzo-soprano vocal range. She has received eight Grammy nominations.
Having already begun composing instrumental pieces on piano, Amos won a full scholarship to the Peabody Institute at Johns Hopkins University, the youngest person ever to have been admitted, at age five. She was expelled at age eleven for, in her own words, insisting on playing by ear and because of her interest in popular rock music. Amos originally served as the lead singer of short-lived 1980s pop group Y Kant Tori Read before achieving her breakthrough as a solo artist at the forefront of a number of female singer-songwriters in the early 1990s. She has since become one of the world's most prominent female singer-songwriters whose songs have discussed a broad range of topics including sexuality, feminism, politics and religion. She was also noteworthy early in her solo career as one of the few alternative rock performers to use a piano as her primary instrument. Some of her charting singles include "Crucify", "Silent All These Years", "God", "Cornflake Girl", "Caught a Lite Sneeze", "Professional Widow", "Spark", "1000 Oceans", "Flavor", and "A Sorta Fairytale", her most commercially successful single in the U.S. to date. Amos has sold more than 12 million albums worldwide. She has been nominated for and won several awards in different genres, ranging from MTV VMAs to classical music with an Echo award in 2012.
Jeremy John Irons (born September 19, 1948) is an English actor. After receiving classical training at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School, Irons began his acting career on stage in 1969, and has since appeared in many West End theatre productions including The Winter's Tale, Macbeth, Much Ado About Nothing, The Taming of the Shrew, Godspell, Richard II and Embers. In 1984, he made his Broadway debut in Tom Stoppard's The Real Thing and received a Tony Award for Best Actor.
Irons' first major film role came in the 1981 romantic drama The French Lieutenant's Woman, for which he received a BAFTA nomination for Best Actor. After starring in such film dramas as Moonlighting (1982), Betrayal (1983) and The Mission (1986), he gained critical acclaim for portraying twin gynaecologists in David Cronenberg's psychological thriller Dead Ringers (1988). In 1990, Irons played accused murderer Claus von Bülow in Reversal of Fortune, and took home multiple awards, including an Academy Award for Best Actor.

This will be a fourth part in a ten part series on Communist countries, their collapses, and why they collapsed. In this episode, we'll be focusing on Czechoslovakia and the Velvet Revolution. Although, I'd like to strongly apologize for my (extremely) late upload of this. I was planning on having this out DAYS ago, but I lost the footage while uploading it and I had to do it again. My other vid on Assad hopefully makes up for it.

This event is organised by the Czech Centre London. Twenty five years ago in December 1989, Václav Havel was elected as President of Czechoslovakia, marking the end of the Velvet Revolution and with it, the culmination of 41 years of communist rule. Before becoming a statesman, Havel was a playwright, essayist, dissident and philosopher. His political activities during the communist regime brought him under the surveillance of the secret police and led to multiple prison stints, including a four-year incarceration between 1979 and 1983. His Civic Forum Party played a major role in the Velvet Revolution, and Havel himself was instrumental in dismantling the Warsaw Pact and expanding NATO eastwards. Above all, however, he remained an intellectual and an artist. By his side throughout was ...
Twenty years after the fall of communism in Eastern Europe, what is the legacy of the peoples power that brought about the velvet revolutions?
Czechs and Slovaks regained their freedom in November 1989 through non-violent protests in Prague, Bratislava, and other towns of then Czechoslovakia. Their Velvet Revolution climaxed a decade of renewed civic challenges to a repressive Communist regime that began with Charter 77 dissidents including Vaclav Havel and accelerated after 1986. Deprived of objective information about developments in their own country, Czechs and Slovaks turned to the Voice of America, Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, and other Western broadcasters for information. Only through Western radio did they learn about accelerating challenges to Communist orthodoxy in Poland, Hungary, and the Soviet Union and about ferment in their own country.
Celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Velvet Revolution, the National Endowment for Democracy and the Embassy of the Czech Republic organized three panels to reflect on the historic importance of that momentous event and its relevance today. Panel 1: "From Charter 77 to the Maidan: Empowering the Powerless" featuring Karel von Schwarzenberg, former Minister of Foreign Affairs, Czech Republic and Madeleine Albright, former U.S. Secretary of State. Moderated by Carl Gershman, National Endowment for Democracy. Panel 2: "Ukraine and the Future of Democracy in Europe" • Martin Palous, Vaclav Havel Library • Jackson Diehl, The Washington Post • Nadia Diuk, National Endowment for Democracy • Leon Wieseltier, The New Republic • Jacques Rupnik, Fondation Nationale des Sciences Politiques • Mode...
This video reports on the Google Doodle generated on 11-17-14, that celebrates the 25th anniversary of the Velvet Revolution. The code contained in this video, is to me a direct reference to the Georgia Guidestones, the Bush-11 cabal and the letters JAM placed on the Georgia Guidestones block, that was eventually removed in a public spectacle and destroyed. The JAM reference is a small element in this video report, that emphasizes 11-22-14 before the December dates of 12-21 or 12-24. This video is late being uploaded, because shortly after finishing this video report, I became very ill and could not find the strength to take the time to upload it on the day I finished it. Cold weather took its toll on me health wise and rendered me very ill, bed ridden, and unable to think clearly. My ap...
