The old Jewish cemetery in downtown Frankfurt is a big part of the city's Jewish history and heritage. It was used between 1828 and 1929 and there are approximately 40,000 graves. Here at the Frankfurt old Jewish cemetery the voice of a century speaks through these graves to reveal in fact a list of who's who in Frankfurt's Jewish history. There are many personalities of the Rothschild banking family, the most famous German Jewish painter Moritz Daniel Oppenheim, the noble prize winner for medicine Paul Ehrlich, the women's rights activist Bertha Pappenheim, Leopold Sonnemann the founder of the newspaper Frankfurter Zeitung - today known as Frankfurter Allgemeine banned by the Nazis in 1943, the philanthropists Henry and Emma Budge as well as the historian Isidor Kracauer.
The old Jewish cemetery covers 74,000 square meters, and at the front are the graves of about 800 Frankfurt Jews who evaded Nazi persecution and deportation by committing suicide. There are also 50 graves of German soldiers of the Jewish faith killed in the First World War. Some 12,000 Jews died for their country - ironically, it was a Jewish lieutenant, Hugo Guttmann, who awarded the Iron Cross, First Class, to a 29-year-old corporal named Adolf Hitler. Due to the graves of Rabbi Samson Rafael Hirsch and the Rabbi Israel von Stolin, the cemetery is visited by many orthodox Jews from around the world. Similar to the Wailing Wall in Jerusalem, people leave notes and light candles.
Samson Raphael Hirsch was a German rabbi best known as the intellectual founder of a school of contemporary Orthodox Judaism known as Torah im Derech Eretz - Torah with the way of the land. Israel von Stolin came from a famous dynasty of Hasidic rabbis from Belarus. Documentation of this cemetery is now being worked out by the Frankfurt Jewish museum. Frankfurt has a long and colorful German-Jewish history.

Jewish cemetery
A Jewish cemetery (Hebrew בית עלמין) ("beit almin" or "beit kvarot") is a cemetery where members of the Jewish faith are buried in keeping with Jewish tradition.
Known in Hebrew as "house of eternity," the land of the cemetery is considered holy and a special consecration ceremony takes place on its inauguration. Establishing a cemetery is one of the first priorities for a new Jewish community. A Jewish cemetery is generally purchased and supported with communal funds.
History
Early Jewish cemeteries were located outside of the city. In the Diaspora, it is traditional to bury the dead with the feet in the direction of Jerusalem. The tombstones usually have inscriptions in Hebrew and the regional language. During the Nazi Germany regime, Jewish cemeteries all over Europe were destroyed and desecrated.
The largest Jewish cemeteries of Europe can be found in Budapest, Łódź, Prague, Warsaw, Vienna and Berlin. Other Jewish cemeteries in Europe include the Jewish Cemetery in Khotyn and the Chatam Sofer Memorial (part of the Old Jewish Cemetery in Bratislava).

Due to the graves of Rabbi Samson Rafael Hirsch and the Rabbi Israel von Stolin, the cemetery is visited by many orthodox Jews from around the world. Similar to the Wailing Wall in Jerusalem, people leave notes and light candles.
Samson Raphael Hirsch was a German rabbi best known as the intellectual founder of a school of contemporary Orthodox Judaism known as Torah im Derech Eretz - Torah with the way of the land. Israel von Stolin came from a famous dynasty of Hasidic rabbis from Belarus. Documentation of this cemetery is now being worked out by the Frankfurt Jewish museum. Frankfurt has a long and colorful German-Jewish history.

Uman and Breslov are cities in Ukraine where Rebbe Nachman taught his followers, becoming the holy leader (tzadik) of the Breslov Hasidim movement. He was born only four years after 1768, the year that a large peasant rebellion led by the Cossacks Gonta and Zalizniak, now considered Ukrainian national heroes, slaughtered 20 000 Uman residents; both Jews and Poles. Today, every year, thousands of Hasidim from 70 countries visit Rebbe Nachman’s grave in Uman on Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year. Thirty thousand Hasidic Jews arrive in Uman, Ukraine, on an annual pilgrimage to celebrate the Jewish New Year at the grave of their holy leader. Their arrival is met with the ire and prejudice of the Ukrainian far-right. Clashes between the two groups are routine and yet the reciprocal intolerance of both cultures threatens to destroy Uman. This crafted doc tells of a remarkable clash between 2 civilisations.
Today, every year, thousands of Hasidim from 70 countries visit Rebbe Nachmans grave in Uman on Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year. Rebbe Nachman promised that every Jew who prayed, danced and sang at his graveside during Rosh Hashanah would be saved. He also encouraged his disciples to talk with God as though he was their best friend, with joy and openheartedness. Hasidim are keen to obey the commandments of their beloved tzadik and perform their ceremonies exuberantly and vigorously.
The crowds of Hasidim travelling to Uman support a large part of the citys economy, although not everybody in the city is happy with that. Members of the nationalistic party Freedom (Svoboda) agitate against the foreigners and accuse the local authorities of corruption and selling out to Hasidim. A large Christian cross, a visible sign of Svobodas discontent, is erected by the lake where the largest group of Hasidim come to pray every year. Meanwhile, the conflict over erecting a monument to Gonta and Zalizniak has dragged on for over 40 years. Hasidim are annoyed by the idea of commemorating those responsible for the Uman massacre.
Only one man seems not to bother with religious, national or economic clashes. In Breslov, old Volodya, the caretaker of the Jewish cemetery, leads a poor and simple life. His house stands on old cellars in which Rebbe Nachman dictated his books to his favourite student, Nathan.
