Sir Nicholas George Winton, MBE (born 19 May 1909) is a British humanitarian who organised the rescue of 669 mostly Jewish children from German-occupied Czechoslovakia on the eve of the Second World War in an operation later known as the Czech Kindertransport. Winton found homes for them and arranged for their safe passage to Britain. The UK press has dubbed him the "British Schindler".
In 1907, Winton's parents, who were of German-Jewish origin, moved from Germany to Hampstead, London, where Nicholas was born. The family name was Wertheim, but they subsequently changed it to Winton.
The family eventually converted to Christianity and Winton was baptised. In 1923, he transferred to Stowe School, which had just opened. He left without matriculating, attending night school while volunteering at the Military Bank. Some time later, he left for Hamburg where he began to work at Behrens Bank, and then for Wasserman Bank in Berlin. In 1931, he left for France where he worked for the Banque Nationale de Crédit in Paris and earned a banking qualification. After his return to London he worked as a stockbroker at the London Stock Exchange.

"The Man" is a slang phrase that may refer to the government or to some other authority in a position of power. In addition to this derogatory connotation, it may also serve as a term of respect and praise.
The phrase "the Man is keeping me down" is commonly used to describe oppression. The phrase "stick it to the Man" encourages resistance to authority, and essentially means "fight back" or "resist", either openly or via sabotage.
The earliest recorded use[citation needed] of the term "the Man" in the American sense dates back to a letter written by a young Alexander Hamilton in September 1772, when he was 15. In a letter to his father James Hamilton, published in the Royal Dutch-American Gazette, he described the response of the Dutch governor of St. Croix to a hurricane that raked that island on August 31, 1772. "Our General has issued several very salutary and humane regulations and both in his publick and private measures, has shewn himself the Man." [dubious – discuss] In the Southern U.S. states, the phrase came to be applied to any man or any group in a position of authority, or to authority in the abstract. From about the 1950s the phrase was also an underworld code word for police, the warden of a prison or other law enforcement or penal authorities.

On 27 June 2013 the International Raoul Wallenberg Foundation honored Sir Nicholas Winton, English Holocaust savior that turned 104 last May. During Second World War Winton rescued and saved from certain death more than six hundred Jewish children from Czechoslovakia condemned by the Nazis to perish at death camps. Winton received the Raoul Wallenberg Centennial Medal in a special ceremony held at the Embassy of Sweden in London with the presence of former Prime Minister, Gordon Brown. Sir Nicholas George Winton, MBE, (born 19 May 1909) is a British humanitarian who organized the rescue of 669 mostly Jewish children from German-occupied Czechoslovakia on the eve of the Second World War in an operation later known as the Czech Kindertransport. Winton found homes for them and arranged for their safe passage to Britain. The UK press has dubbed him the "British Schindler". he humbly kept his efforts a secret, until his wife found scrapbooks about the children in their attic. Winton was Knighted by the Queen of England, who said of Winton: "It's wonderful that you were able to save so many children."

On 27 June 2013 the International Raoul Wallenberg Foundation honored Sir Nicholas Winton, English Holocaust savior that turned 104 last May. During Second World War Winton rescued and saved from certain death more than six hundred Jewish children from Czechoslovakia condemned by the Nazis to perish at death camps.
Winton received the Raoul Wallenberg Centennial Medal in a special ceremony held at the Embassy of Sweden in London with the presence of former Prime Minister, Gordon Brown. Eduardo Eurnekian and Baruch Tenenbaum, Chairman and Founder of the educational NGO, presented the award.
In his speech, Eurnekian said: "Sir Nicholas Winton risked his comfortable position as a stockbroker and began an operation that any sensible person would have qualified as impossible. Few people deserve the Nobel Peace Prize more than Sir Nicholas Winton".

Sir Nicholas Winton, who organised the rescue of nearly 700 Jewish children from Nazi-occupied Czechoslovakia, has died in hospital at the age of 106.
Sir Nicholas was nicknamed Britain's Schindler after he saved the lives of 669 children by sending them on trains from Prague to London.
His son-in-law Stephen Watson said Sir Nicholas died peacefully in his sleep at Wexham Hospital in Slough.
Prime Minister David Cameron described Sir Nicholas as a "great man", adding: "We must never forget Sir Nicholas Winton's humanity in saving so many children from the Holocaust."

Sir Nicholas was nicknamed Britain's Schindler after he saved the lives of 669 children by sending them on trains from Prague to London.

Sir Nicholas George Winton, MBE, (born 19 May 1909) is a British humanitarian who organized the rescue of 669 mostly Jewish children from German-occupied Czechoslovakia on the eve of the Second World War in an operation later known as the Czech Kindertransport. Winton found homes for them and arranged for their safe passage to Britain. The UK press has dubbed him the "British Schindler". he humbly kept his efforts a secret, until his wife found scrapbooks about the children in their attic. He is celebrated for saving over 650 Jewish Czechoslovakian children from the Nazi Holocaust by finding foster homes for them in Britain ...
