If you've ever moved, you know what a headache packing and unpacking a home can be. Now imagine if you had over one hundred homes full of priceless antiques to pack and transport.
Well, starting Monday, Jan. 6, 2014 the curators at the Toy and Miniature Museum of Kansas City will begin painstakingly packing up their collection of over 72,000 objects, including over 100 dollhouses, in preparation for major renovations to the museum.
As part of our Curator's Choice series, Museum Educator Laura Taylor talked about one of the most storied dollhouses on display.
The Josephine Bird Hall dollhouse dates to the late 1800s, and was custom built for Josephine, who was the daughter of the successive presidents of the Emery Bird Thayer Department Store in Kansas City, Mo.
"Josephine's house is not just a child's plaything, but it's a microcosm that can tell us about Victorian life here in Kansas City at the turn of the century," said Taylor.
The Toy and Miniature Museum will be open from 10 a.m. -- 4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday 1 p.m. -- 4 p.m. The museum will re-open as the The National Museum of Toys and Miniatures in early 2015.

If you've ever moved, you know what a headache packing and unpacking a home can be. Now imagine if you had over one hundred homes full of priceless antiques to pack and transport. The construction of Miniaturk, the first miniature park in Istanbul, began in June 30, 2001. With great fanfare, Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan opened the park to visitors on May 2, 2003. Miniaturk covers a total area of 60,000 square meters. Its model area is 15,000 sqm, making Miniaturk the world's largest miniature park in respect to its model area. Miniaturk also boasts 40,000 sqm of open space, 3,500 sqm of covered area, 2,000 sqm of pools and waterways, and a parking lot with a capacity of 500 vehicles. "Josephine's house is not just a child's plaything, but it's a microcosm that can tell us about Victorian life here in Kansas City at the turn of the century," said Taylor.
The Toy and Miniature Museum will be open from 10 a.m. -- 4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday 1 p.m. -- 4 p.m. The museum will re-open as the The National Museum of Toys and Miniatures in early 2015.

The Josephine Bird Hall dollhouse dates to the late 1800s, and was custom built for Josephine, who was the daughter of the successive presidents of the Emery Bird Thayer Department Store in Kansas City, Mo.
"Josephine's house is not just a child's plaything, but it's a microcosm that can tell us about Victorian life here in Kansas City at the turn of the century," said Taylor.
The Toy and Miniature Museum will be open from 10 a.m. -- 4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday 1 p.m. -- 4 p.m. The museum will re-open as the The National Museum of Toys and Miniatures in early 2015.

The construction of Miniaturk, the first miniature park in Istanbul, began in June 30, 2001. With great fanfare, Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan opened the park to visitors on May 2, 2003.
Miniaturk covers a total area of 60,000 square meters. Its model area is 15,000 sqm, making Miniaturk the world's largest miniature park in respect to its model area. Miniaturk also boasts 40,000 sqm of open space, 3,500 sqm of covered area, 2,000 sqm of pools and waterways, and a parking lot with a capacity of 500 vehicles.
The park contains 120 models done in 1/25th scale. 57 of the structures are from Istanbul, 51 are from Anatolia, and 12 are from the Ottoman territories that today lie outside of Turkey. Additional space was reserved for potential future models. The infrastructure was built taking into consideration the needs of potential additions. Therefore, Miniaturk will continue growing, modeling, in a sense, planned urbanization.

That said, whilst we take a tour through torrid trash - there is ONE new working miniature that features in the video - can you work out which it is?
FAQ QUESTION: "WHERE DO I BUY ONE OF THESE??"
- The Curator usually finds the exhibits via eBay or similar sites. They're not easy to find sometimes, but they're out there. Be patient and you might be lucky!
FAQ QUESTION: "WHY DOESN'T THE CURATOR TALK??"
- Unfortunately, The Curator isn't able to talk in the videos - its just not possible. Actually, its a good thing - stops us listening to his nasally, whiney British accent.
FAQ QUESTION: "CAN I HAVE ONE OF THE EXHIBITS??"
- Sadly no. If we did that, there'd be nothing in the collection! BUT, we do hold competitions from time to time, so stay tuned!

Using 1/8th scale locomotives, we see Class 55 'Deltic' 55002 The Kings Own Yorkshire Light Infantry (the full size 'real' Deltic herself preserved at the museum), at work on this new miniature line which opened in its new uprated and revamped format in July 2015.

Those aren’t rooms for ants, but they’re close. They’re tiny movie set-like wonders on display at the Museum of Miniature And Cinema in Lyon. These painstaking works we created by curator Dan Ohlman and several other artists. Part of the secret of achieving realism is making the miniatures from the same material as the real objects.
It’s a tribute to the miniature film sets that cinema studios used before the advent of CGI. The “Cinema” part of the museum has a large collection of props, including Alien Queen and the ship from Event Horizon
The Museum of Miniature And Cinema is located in Lyon, France. Dan Ohlman had worked as a cabinet maker for 17 years before discovering the joys of the miniature. Since then, he has made tens of tiny interiors, some taking up to seven months to make. Ohlman tirelessly researches his subjects: he had to spend a week in Restaurant Maxime in Paris to make an accurate copy of the dining room!

Housed in a 16th century building in the historic center of Lyon, France is the Musée Miniature et Cinéma, a 5-story museum containing over 100 miniature film sets. The tiny scenes were produced by world-renowned miniaturists and contain the highest form of Hyperrealism in order to trick the audience’s eye into believing each set was indeed life-size.
The handcrafted models contain all the minuscule features that would be found in the film’s actual scene, from fake mold inhabiting peeling walls to scratches seen behind tiny bedposts. The props in the museum’s scenes are also placed with incredible accuracy, disheveled books in libraries propped against each other at just the right angle, and miniature Charles Eames chairs that would even fool the designer. Accurate within these scenes is also their relationship to outside light, windows accentuating or distilling the light to position the set in the right time of day, geographic location or season.
“The subtle lighting arrangement, the painstaking replication of old textures, the use of the same original materials, all contribute to the creation of a moving poetry that resonates with each new miniature panorama,” explains the museum’s website.

Brookside Miniature Railway
On the 9th July 2011, I made my first visit to The Brookside Miniature Railway, Cheshire's Premier 7 ¼ inch miniature railway operates within the Brookside Garden Centre in Poynton. Brookside have Four Steam and Three Diesel Locomotives. On the day of my visit, I was lucky enough to see three of them, Amy Louise, Miss Katie and Mighty Max in action. As you purchase your ticket at Brookside Central, be sure to have a look around the shop as this doubles as a Railway Museum and it is excellent. Your journey takes you over bridges, under tunnels and onto Bridge of Orchy in The Scottish Region, then returning to Brookside Central. A lovely journey with plenty to see. Über 40 verschiedene Flugzeuge (vom A380 bis zur Cessna) fahren heute selbstständig über den Flughafen, rollen zum Gate und werden von einem Pushback-Fahrzeug zurückgeschoben, um dann zur Start- und Landebahn zu rollen. Dort beschleunigen sie und heben ab. Jedes Flugzeug ist mit Originalbeleuchtung ausgestattet und die Turbinen klingen zumindest beim Start realistisch.
The 150 sqm large airport, located in the middle of the Alps, is a big technical challenge. Since May 2004, already, the technology is being developed to find a solution for a realistic simulation of takeoffs and landings. The Airport has been opened in May 2011. Besides the simulation for takeoff and landing, there is a large advanced Carsystem which moves not only vehicles, but also airplanes. The Airport is the largest model airport and is technically as groundbreaking as the Carsystem.

If I say that the idea of creating the huge model was greeted with fervor on its initial stage, I will significantly exaggerate public interest. Seemingly, such a large-scale project has to be a focus of attention, but in fact I worked it out independently from beginning to end. The natural question is why? Today I would like to analyze the reason of that primary skepticism. Apart from my ambition and desire to prove that I am able to do something on my own, the main reason was my inability to explain intelligibly what "Grand Maket" is. Without answering this question, it`s really impossible to determine one`s attitude to this project. Only now, evaluating the results of hard work, that hundreds of skillful hands performed, we can say with confidence: "Grand Maket" is a work of art, deserving to be placed in the museum! This statement explains a lot. "Grand"Maket" should be taken figuratively, like a theatre performance, film or literary work. And I hope, each visitor will remember the exposition as an artistic image of Russia, not tiny country model.

On the 9th July 2011, I made my first visit to The Brookside Miniature Railway, Cheshire's Premier 7 ¼ inch miniature railway operates within the Brookside Garden Centre in Poynton.
Brookside have Four Steam and Three Diesel Locomotives. On the day of my visit, I was lucky enough to see three of them, Amy Louise, Miss Katie and Mighty Max in action.
As you purchase your ticket at Brookside Central, be sure to have a look around the shop as this doubles as a Railway Museum and it is excellent. Your journey takes you over bridges, under tunnels and onto Bridge of Orchy in The Scottish Region, then returning to Brookside Central. A lovely journey with plenty to see.
The sun was shining and its plain to see from the faces of everyone on the trains, that everybody was enjoying themselves.
My thanks go to Val, Callum, Matt, Chris and John for making me feel very welcome and keeping me topped up with coffee.

The Toy & Miniature Museum will reopen on August 1 with an all new look and a brand new name: The National Museum of Toys and Miniatures. Producer Julie Denesha got a sneak peek at the creation of the Toytisserie sculpture which will be the focal point as patrons enter the museum.
Graffiti artist JT Daniels assembles a team to create a big, bold mural for the new home of Arts KC, a nonprofit organization which aims to build a city of great dreams and vigorous life, where everyone participates in and benefits from the arts.
Poet Ezhno Martin performs Liberated (Lady-Clothes) which takes us along on his journey to find a home in his own skin.
And from NMPBS, we profile photographer Patrick Nagatani.
