Saint-Tropez (French pronunciation: [sɛ̃.tʁɔˈpe]; Sant-Troupès in Provençal dialect, San Tropez in Spanish and some older English texts) is a Provençal town, 104 kilometres (65 miles) east of Marseille, in the Var department of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region of southeastern France. It is also the principal town in the canton of Saint-Tropez. Saint-Tropez is located on the French Riviera. It was a military stronghold and an unassuming fishing village until the beginning of the 20th century. It was the first town on this coast to be liberated during World War II (as part of Operation Dragoon). After the war, it became an internationally known seaside resort, renowned principally because of the influx of artists of the French New Wave in cinema and the Yé-yé movement in music. It later became a resort for the European and American jet set and a goal for tourists in search of a little Provençal authenticity and an occasional celebrity sighting. The inhabitants of Saint-Tropez are called Tropéziens[1] (French pronunciation: [tʁɔpeˈzjɛ̃]), and the town is familiarly called St-Trop (French pronunciation: [sɛ̃ˈtʁɔp]).

Pétanque (French pronunciation: [petɑ̃k]; Occitan: petanca [peˈtaŋkɔ]) is a form of boules where the goal is to throw hollow metal balls as close as possible to a small wooden ball called a cochonnet (literally "piglet") or jack, while standing inside a starting circle with both feet on the ground. The game is normally played on hard dirt or gravel, but can also be played on grass, sand or other surfaces. Similar games are bocce, bowls and (adapted to ice) curling. The current form of the game originated in 1907 in La Ciotat, in Provence, France. The French name pétanque (borrowed into English, with or without the acute accent) comes from petanca in the Provençal dialect of the Occitan language, deriving from the expression pès tancats [ˈpɛs taŋˈkats], meaning 'feet together' or more exactly 'feet anchored'. Description
Valle D Aosta Trip Video - While its Dolomite cousins exhibit notable German tendencies, Aostas nuances are French. The result is a curious hybrid culture known as Valdostan, a historical mix of French Provençal and northern Italian that has infiltrated the food (polenta, spicy sausages and the famous fontina cheese) and ensured the survival of an esoteric local language, Franco-Provençal or Valdôtain, a dialect still used by approximately 55% of the population. Comprising one large glacial valley running east--west, which is bisected by several smaller valleys, the semi-autonomous Val dAosta is overlooked by some of Europes highest peaks, including Mont Blanc (4810m), the Matterhorn (Monte Cervino; 4478m), Monte Rosa (4633m) and Gran Paradiso (4061m). Not surprisingly, the region offers some of the best snow facilities on the continent, with opportunities for skiers to descend hair-raisingly into France and Switzerland over lofty glaciers or traverse them in equally spectacular cable cars. When the snow melts, the hiking is even more sublime, with access to the 165km Trip du Mont Blanc, Parco Nazionale del Gran Paradiso, and Aostas two blue-riband, high-altitude trails: the Alte Vie 1 and 2. Aostas roots are Roman -- the eponymous town guards some significant ruins -- while annexation by the House of Savoy in the 11th century led to the building of numerous medieval castles. In the 12th and 13th centuries, German-speaking Walsers from Switzerland migrated into the Val di Gressoney, and a handful of villages still preserve the vernacular language and architecture. Enjoy Your Valle D Aosta Trip Video!

Medium 2015-04-10Provençal (Occitan: Provençau or Prouvençau [pʀuveⁿˈsaw]) is a dialect of Occitan spoken by a minority of people in southern France, mostly in Provence. In the English-speaking world, "Provençal" is often used to refer to all dialects of Occitan, but it actually refers specifically to the dialect spoken in Provence.
"Provençal" (with "Limousin") is also the customary name given to the older version of the langue d'oc used by the troubadours of medieval literature, corresponding to Old French or the langue d'oïl of the northern areas of France.
In 2007, the ISO 639-3 code changed from prv to oci, as prv was merged into oci.
The main sub-dialects of Provençal are:
Gavòt (in French Gavot), spoken in the Western Occitan Alps, around Digne, Sisteron, Gap, Barcelonnette and the upper County of Nice, but also in a part of the Ardèche, is not exactly a subdialect of Provençal, but rather a closely related Occitan dialect, also known as Vivaro-Alpine. So is the dialect spoken in the upper valleys of Piedmont, Italy (Val Maira, Val Varacha, Val d'Estura, Entraigas, Limon, Vinai, Pignerol, Sestriera). Some people view Gavòt as a variety of Provençal since a part of the Gavot area (near Digne and Sisteron) belongs to historical Provence.
