Shah Jahan
Shahabuddin Muhammad Shah Jahan (15 January 1592 – 31 January 1666) was the fifth Mughal Emperor of India from 1628 to 1658. Born Prince Khurram, he was the son of Emperor Jahangir and his Hindu Rajput wife, Taj Bibi Bilqis Makani (13 May 1573 – 18 April 1619).
He was chosen as successor to the throne after the death of his father in 1627. He was considered one of the greatest Mughals of the Timur family. Like his grandfather, Akbar, he was eager to expand his vast empire. In 1658, he fell ill and was confined by his son and successor Aurangzeb in Agra Fort until his death in 1666.
The period of his reign was considered the golden age of Mughal architecture. Shah Jahan erected many monuments, the best known of which is the Taj Mahal at Agra, built in 1632–1654 as a tomb for his beloved wife Mumtaz Mahal.
Early life
Born in January 1592, Shah ab-ud-din Muhammad Khurram was the third son born to Emperor Jahangir; his mother was a Rajput princess from Marwar called Princess Manmati (her official name in Mughal chronicles was Bilquis Makani). The name "Khurram" was chosen for the young prince by his grandfather, Emperor Akbar, with whom the young prince shared a close relationship.

मुग़ल बादशाह शाहजहाँ अपनी सबसे बड़ी बेटी जहाँआरा के साथ शतरंज खेल रहे थे, तभी मुमताज़ महल के कमरे से एक हरकारा ने दौड़ते हुए आकर ख़बर दी कि मलिका मुमताज़ महल की हालत ख़राब हो चुकी है. जहांआरा दौड़ती हुई अपनी माँ के पास गईं और दौड़ते हुए लौट कर अपने पिता को ख़बर दी कि उनकी माँ की प्रसव वेदना असहनीय हो चली है और बच्चा उनके पेट से निकल ही नहीं पा रहा है. शाहजहाँ ने अपने क़रीबी दोस्त हकीम आलिम-अल-दीन वज़ीर ख़ाँ को तलब किया, लेकिन वो भी मुमताज़ महल की पीड़ा को कम करने में असफल रहे. मशहूर इतिहासकार जदुनाथ सरकार अपनी किताब 'स्टडीज़ इन मुग़ल इंडिया' में कवि क़ासिम अली आफ़रीदी की आत्मकथा से उद्धत करते हुए लिखते हैं, ''अपनी माँ की मदद करने में असहाय जहांआरा ने इस उम्मीद से ग़रीबों को रत्न बांटने शुरू कर दिए कि ईश्वर उनकी दुआ को सुन कर उनकी माँ को अच्छा कर देगा. उधर शाहजहाँ का भी रोते-रोते बुरा हाल थ...

The Art of the Islamic and Indian Worlds, including Oriental Rugs and Carpets live auction on 27 October is honoured to present this rare Royal Mughal pashmina carpet.⠀
The carpet is of 'Lattice and Flower' design, exemplary for its brilliant colour and pattern, woven with the most luxurious materials with prized pashmina goat hair woven onto a fine silk foundation.⠀
It is one of only four 17th century pashmina carpets remaining in private hands. The Pashmina Carpet was last displayed in 1998 in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, in the seminal exhibition 'Flowers Underfoot'.⠀

“The king is dead, long live the king”. This is the traditional way of announcing the death of the previous king, and proclaiming his eldest son as the next new king. But among the Mughal kings of India, such a proclamation was unusual. Succession was always a fraught affair, and the mighty emperor Shah Jahan was no exception. This is the agonising story of the Mughal succession wars; when princes fought and killed their own siblings; when princesses had to remain spinsters because there were no worthy suitors; and when close family ties were broken in a mad scramble for the throne. It was an unforgiving system that ultimately made the dynasty itself collapse under its own weight. Watch this video to know of the circumstances that catapulted Shah Jahan to the throne of the richest kingdom in the world, but reduced his personal life to a terribly tragic one.

मुग़ल बादशाह शाहजहाँ अपनी सबसे बड़ी बेटी जहाँआरा के साथ शतरंज खेल रहे थे, तभी मुमताज़ महल के कमरे से एक हरकारा ने दौड़ते हुए आकर ख़बर दी कि मलिका मुमताज़ महल की हालत ख़राब हो चुकी है.
जहांआरा दौड़ती हुई अपनी माँ के पास गईं और दौड़ते हुए लौट कर अपने पिता को ख़बर दी कि उनकी माँ की प्रसव वेदना असहनीय हो चली है और बच्चा उनके पेट से निकल ही नहीं पा रहा है.
शाहजहाँ ने अपने क़रीबी दोस्त हकीम आलिम-अल-दीन वज़ीर ख़ाँ को तलब किया, लेकिन वो भी मुमताज़ महल की पीड़ा को कम करने में असफल रहे.
मशहूर इतिहासकार जदुनाथ सरकार अपनी किताब 'स्टडीज़ इन मुग़ल इंडिया' में कवि क़ासिम अली आफ़रीदी की आत्मकथा से उद्धत करते हुए लिखते हैं, ''अपनी माँ की मदद करने में असहाय जहांआरा ने इस उम्मीद से ग़रीबों को रत्न बांटने शुरू कर दिए कि ईश्वर उनकी दुआ को सुन कर उनकी माँ को अच्छा कर देगा. उधर शाहजहाँ का भी रोते-रोते बुरा हाल था और उनकी आँखों से आंसुओं की बारिश हो रही थी. तभी मुमताज़ महल की कोख के अंदर से ही बच्चे के रोने की आवाज़ सुनाई दी.''

Shah Jahan
Shahabuddin Muhammad Shah Jahan (15 January 1592 – 31 January 1666) was the fifth Mughal Emperor of India from 1628 to 1658. Born Prince Khurram, he was the son of Emperor Jahangir and his Hindu Rajput wife, Taj Bibi Bilqis Makani (13 May 1573 – 18 April 1619).
He was chosen as successor to the throne after the death of his father in 1627. He was considered one of the greatest Mughals of the Timur family. Like his grandfather, Akbar, he was eager to expand his vast empire. In 1658, he fell ill and was confined by his son and successor Aurangzeb in Agra Fort until his death in 1666.
The period of his reign was considered the golden age of Mughal architecture. Shah Jahan erected many monuments, the best known of which is the Taj Mahal at Agra, built in 1632–1654 as a tomb for his beloved wife Mumtaz Mahal.
Early life
Born in January 1592, Shah ab-ud-din Muhammad Khurram was the third son born to Emperor Jahangir; his mother was a Rajput princess from Marwar called Princess Manmati (her official name in Mughal chronicles was Bilquis Makani). The name "Khurram" was chosen for the young prince by his grandfather, Emperor Akbar, with whom the young prince shared a close relationship.
