Larry Gott (born James Lawrence Gott, 24 July 1957, Manchester) is an English musician, primarily of the Mancunian band, James. He is also a designer.

Music[link]

Within the band Gott mainly plays guitar and provides backing vocals, but also keyboards and the flute on earlier albums. Prior to joining the band, he had been the guitar tutor for founder members Jim Glennie and Paul Gilbertson. He was later invited to join the band after Gilbertson's playing began to decline due to his drug problems, which eventually led to Gilbertson's sacking. Gott was to remain with James throughout the heyday of their career, forming part of what is considered to be the core nucleus of James, together with singer Tim Booth and bassist Glennie.

Gott announced his intention to leave the band in 1995, after the Laid / Wah Wah albums. According to the band's Foklore biography by Stuart Maconie he was exhausted from the pressures of touring and wanted to spend more time with his family. He stayed in close contact with the other band members during the following year, writing and recording most of the songs on the band's following album Whiplash effectively as a regular member. He went on to study Art and Design and subsequently pursued a career designing furniture.^[1] He also taught music lessons at colleges around Manchester, including Manchester College of Arts and Technology.

Gott made two guest appearances on the band's so-called 'farewell tour' in 2001 at the MEN and Wembley Arenas. Following the band's apparent split, he started to work with bassist Glennie in low key, informal improvisation sessions.

During these intervening years, Gott also worked with Manchester maveric Edward Barton on an, as yet, unreleased album.

James reformed in January 2007, and Gott is at the centre of the reformation, reprising his duties as lead guitarist.

Design[link]

Gott studied three dimensional design at Manchester Metropolitan University graduating in 2000. His work, similar to his guitar playing, followed the Kiss principle, and found favour among the established design community. His 'reaction recliner' won many plaudits and awards including the Allemuir Award for Industry and the Blueprint Award for Creativity, presented by the Milanese architect Mario Bellini at the 2001 '100% design' show at London's Earls Court. An early prototype of this design resides in the permanent collection of the Manchester City Art Gallery.

Another of Gott's award winning pieces, an outdoor chair and table set made from wire mesh, caught the eye of Sir Terence Conran and subsequently retailed in the Conran shops worldwide under Gott's brandname 'MeshMan'.

Tom Hingley (born 9 July 1965, Oxford, England) is a musician best known as the lead vocalist of the English alternative rock band Inspiral Carpets.^[1]

Life[link]

Hingley moved to Oldham in 1984, studying English at Manchester Polytechnic,.^[2][3] He formed a band called Too Much Texas,^[1] and got a job collecting glasses at The Haçienda nightclub in Manchester. He joined Inspiral Carpets as lead vocalist in 1989 (future Oasis guitarist Noel Gallagher also auditioned, but was not chosen).^[1][3] After six successful years, Inspiral Carpets split in 1995 and Hingley started performing as a solo artist, releasing Keep Britain Untidy (2000) and Soulfire (2002), released on his own label Newmemorabilia Records. In 2001 Hingley formed the band The Lovers with Steve Hanley and Paul Hanley, both former members of The Fall and Jason Brown and Kelly Wood. The Lovers' first album, Abba Are The Enemy, was released in 2004. In 2002/2003 Hingley joined a reformed Inspiral Carpets for two sell-out UK tours and again in 2006/2007.^[4] His second album with the Lovers, Highlights, was released in March 2008. In August 2009 Hingley played the Rebellion Punk Festival in Blackpool. In 2009 Hingley released a new solo acoustic record on Newmemorabilia Records called 'Thames Valley Delta Blues', a kind of follow up to the earlier, much-acclaimed 'Keep Britain Untidy'.

Hingley's late father was the Russian academic Ronald Hingley, translator of Chekov for The Oxford University Press.

Hingley continues to perform live, and teaches part-time at Salford University, while studying for a PhD in music performance.^[5]

Today Is the Day is an American noise rock band from Nashville, Tennessee. They have a diverse sound that includes influences from alternative rock, grindcore, and progressive rock among other genres. Lyrical themes include extreme violence, altered states of consciousness, personal struggles, depression, warfare and mental problems such as psychosis, among others.

Biography[link]

The band was founded by Steve Austin and Brad Elrod in Nashville, Tennessee in the early 1990s. The band released its debut EP, entitled How to Win Friends and Influence People, in 1992. This self-financed release garnered the attention of Amphetamine Reptile Records (AmRep) who signed the band (at this time consisting of Austin on vocals and guitar, Brad Elrod on drums, and Mike Herrell on bass guitar) in February 1993. The full-length Supernova was released later that year.^[1]

In September 1994, Today Is the Day saw its popularity in the metal underground increase with the release of their second album, entitled Willpower. That same year, Willpower was followed by the Clusterfuck '94 split EP with labelmates Chokebore and Guzzard. Today Is the Day also contributed to the tenth volume of AmRep's Dope Guns and Fucking in the Streets 7" series with Brainiac and Steel Pole Bath Tub.^[1]

Today Is the Day's self-titled album was released in March 1996. This album was the first of the band's releases recorded at Austin's own studio, Austin Enterprise, in Nashville. For this release, Steve Austin shifted the band's sound slightly and opted to replace bassist Mike Herrell with keyboardist Scott Wexton. Today Is the Day was the band's final recording for AmRep.^[1]

In 1997, Today Is the Day left AmRep and signed with Philadelphia-based metal label Relapse Records and released Temple of the Morning Star in September 1997. For this release, the band's lineup changed significantly, adding bassist and keyboardist Christopher Reeser and drummer Mike Hyde to the band. In addition to Temple of the Morning Star, Today Is the Day also contributed to the In These Black Days 7" series, released by Hydra Head Records, with their rendition of "Sabbath Bloody Sabbath", which can also be found as a secret track at the end of Temple of the Morning Star.^[1]

For Today Is the Day's August 1999 release, entitled In the Eyes of God, Reeser and Hyde were replaced with bassist Bill Kelliher and drummer Brann Dailor, formerly of Rochester, New York's Lethargy and current members of Atlanta, Georgia's Mastodon.^[2] This new lineup first appeared live at the Milwaukee Metalfest and the New England Metal and Hardcore Festival. Having moved to Massachusetts in 1998, this was the first Today Is the Day album to be recorded at Austin Enterprise's new location in Clinton, Massachusetts.^[1]

The years 2000 and 2001 were relatively quiet for Today Is the Day in terms of releasing new material. Live Till You Die was released in August 2000, and included live tracks recorded during the tours in support of Temple of the Morning Star and In the Eyes of God, covers of songs by The Beatles, Bad Company, and Chris Isaak, and various songs compiled from studio sessions held at Austin Enterprise during the late-1990s. In 2001, new Today Is the Day songs were released on splits with Metatron and 16, the first new material since 1999.^[1]

The new songs put out on the split releases later appeared on Today Is the Day's double album Sadness Will Prevail, released in 2002. This album kept with Steve Austin's habit of rotating band personnel, and Kelliher and Dailor were replaced by Chris Debari and Marshall Kilpatric, respectively. Today Is the Day also released their second live album, entitled Blue Blood, in 2002.^[1]

Today Is the Day returned in June 2004 with a new album entitled Kiss the Pig, which featured the debut of new drummer Mike Rosswog, previously of Circle of Dead Children. Rosswog replaced Anal Cunt's John Gillis, who performed live with the band in 2003. Kiss the Pig was the last album released by Today Is the Day on Relapse Records.^[1]

In December 2006 it was announced that former Hate Eternal drummer Derek Roddy had joined the band and would appear on their next studio album, Axis of Eden, released in 2007.^[3]

In April 2010, it was confirmed Today Is the Day would join former AmpRep label mates Melvins, Boss Hog, and others at Amphetamine Reptile's 25th Anniversary bash in Minneapolis on August 28, 2010.^[4]

In July 2010 Black Market Activities Records announced that they are welcoming Today Is The Day to its roster. Black Market Activities will release Today Is The Day’s ninth studio album in 2011.^[5]

SuperNova Records[link]

In 2006 Steve Austin launched his own record label, SuperNova Records, which was founded in order to properly release material by Today Is the Day, among others. As of April 2007, SuperNova has released DVDs of live Today Is the Day shows from 1995 and 1996, as well as reissuing a remastered version of their Willpower record, previously released on Amphetamine Reptile Records. The label also released a film Axis of Eden based on the album of the same name.^[6]

Lester Keith Piggott (born 5 November 1935) is a retired English professional jockey, popularly known as "The Long Fellow".^[1][2] With 4,493 career wins, including nine Epsom Derby victories, he is one of the most well-known English flat racing jockeys of all time.

Family background and personal life[link]

Lester Piggott was born in Wantage to a family that could trace its roots as jockeys and trainers back to the 18th century.^[3] The Piggotts were a Cheshire farming family who in the 1870s ran the Crown Inn in Nantwich for at least 40 years. Lester's grandfather Ernest (Ernie) Piggott (1878–1941) owned a racehorse stable at The Old Manor in Letcombe Regis and his father (Ernest) Keith Piggott (1904–1993) another at South Bank in Lambourn, where Lester lived until 1954.^[4] Ernie Piggott rode three Grand National winners, in 1912, 1918 and 1919 and was married to a sister of the jockeys Mornington Cannon and Kempton Cannon, who both rode winners of the Derby, in 1899 and 1904 respectively. He was also three-times British jump racing Champion Jockey (in 1910, 1913 and 1915). Keith Piggott was a successful National Hunt jockey and trainer, winning the Champion Hurdle as a jockey in 1939 and the Grand National as a trainer in 1963 with Ayala, becoming the British jump racing Champion Trainer of the 1962–63 season. Lester Piggott is the cousin, through his mother Lilian Iris Rickaby, of two other jockeys, Bill and Fred Rickaby. Fred Rickaby was British flat racing Champion Apprentice in 1931 and 1932.

Piggott is married to Susan Armstrong. Her father, Sam Armstrong, and her brother, Robert Armstrong, were both racehorse trainers. They have two daughters, Maureen, an ex-eventer (married to Derby-winning trainer William Haggas) and Tracy (a sports presenter on Irish television station RTÉ). He also has a son, Jamie, from a relationship with Anna Ludlow.^[5] His house is named after a famous racehorse from history—Florizel.

Career as a jockey[link]

Piggott began racing horses from his father's stable when he was 10 years old and won his first race in 1948, aged 12 years, on a horse called The Chase at Haydock Park. A teenage sensation, he rode his first winner of the Epsom Derby on Never Say Die in 1954 aged 18 years and went on to win eight more, on Crepello (1957), St. Paddy (1960), Sir Ivor (1968), Nijinsky (1970), Roberto (1972), Empery (1976), The Minstrel (1977) and Teenoso (1983). He was stable jockey to Noel Murless and later to Vincent O'Brien and had a glittering career of unparalleled success. Known as the "housewives' favorite", Piggott had legions of followers and did much to expand the popularity of horse racing beyond its narrow, class-based origins.

Famously tall for a jockey (5 ft 8 in/1.73 m), hence his nickname of "The Long Fellow", Lester Piggott struggled to keep his weight down and for most of his career rode at little more than 8 stone (112 lb/51 kg). He pioneered a new style of race-riding that was subsequently widely adopted by colleagues at home and abroad and enabled him to become Champion Jockey eleven times. There can be little doubt that had he not chosen after the 1971 season to ride more selectively, he would have won more championships.

In 1980 his relationship with the Sangster–O'Brien combination came to an end and in a jockeys' merry-go-round he was appointed as stable jockey to Noel Murless's son-in-law Henry Cecil, the British flat racing Champion Trainer, at Murless's old stables, Warren Place. He was again champion jockey in 1981 and 1982. However, as the result of a dispute in late 1983 as to whether he had reneged on an agreement to ride Daniel Wildenstein's All Along the ride went to young Walter Swinburn in the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe, Wildenstein refused to allow him to ride any more of his horses. It was costly for Piggott, as All Along won the Arc and a string of other international races in an autumn campaign that ended with her being named US Horse of the Year. Further, as Wildenstein was one of Cecil's principal owners, this placed a strain on the relationship, and in 1984 Cecil and Piggott split, with Steve Cauthen taking over at Warren Place.

Like many other jockeys and trainers Lester lives near the Home of Racing at Newmarket in Suffolk.

Later career and conviction for tax evasion[link]

Piggott retired as a jockey at the end of the 1985 flat season and became a trainer. At its peak, his Eve Lodge stables housed 97 horses and sent out 34 winners. In 1987 he was convicted of tax fraud and jailed for three years, of which he served 366 days. The following year he was stripped of his OBE (which he had been awarded in 1975) because of his conviction. Once released from jail, he resumed his career as a jockey in 1990 and won the Breeders' Cup Mile on Royal Academy within ten days of his return. He rode another Classic winner, Rodrigo de Triano, in the 1992 2000 Guineas. His last win was in October 1994 and he officially retired, this time for good, in 1995. In 2004 he published the book Lester's Derbys.^[6]

Illness[link]

On Tuesday 15 May 2007 he was admitted to intensive care in a Swiss hospital following a recurrence of a previous heart problem. His wife stated that this illness is not life-threatening and that he was recovering in intensive care as a precaution. He attended Royal Ascot in June 2007^[7] and the Epsom Derby in June 2008 where he tipped the winner, New Approach, during a BBC television interview. He was also present for Gold Cup day at the Cheltenham Festival in March 2009, where he was interviewed in the parade ring.

In popular culture[link]

The British music band James recorded a song named "Sometimes (Lester Piggott)" on their album Laid. It has a beat which is like a horse galloping. The outro on the original 12" of Sit Down also featured a falsetto voice singing the jockey's name.

The Hope and Anchor pub in Margate, Kent has been restyled with a horse racing theme and renamed Lester's after the famous jockey.

The Van Morrison song "In the Days Before Rock 'n Roll" also mentions Piggott by name: "When we let, then we bet / On Lester Piggott when we met [ten to one] / And we let the goldfish go"

In 1992, the Queen agreed, under pressure, to pay taxes. The satirical magazine Private Eye showed a picture of her talking on a telephone, asking for Lester Piggott.^[8]
