Hatmaking is the manufacture of hats and head-wear. Millinery is the designing and manufacture of hats. A millinery shop is a store that sells those goods.
A milliner or hatter designs, makes, trims, or sells hats.
Millinery is sold to women, men and children, though some definitions limit the term to women's hats. Historically, milliners, typically female shopkeepers, produced or imported an inventory of garments for men, women, and children, including hats, shirts, cloaks, shifts, caps, neckerchiefs, and undergarments, and sold these garments in their millinery shop.
More recently, the term milliner has evolved to describe a person who designs, makes, sells or trims hats primarily for a female clientele.
The origin of the term is probably the Middle English milener, meaning an inhabitant of the city of Milan or one who deals in items from Milan, known for its fashion and clothing.
Many styles of headgear have been popular through history and worn for different functions and events. They can be part of uniforms or worn to indicate social status. Styles include the top hat, hats worn as part of military uniforms, cowboy hat, and cocktail hat..
A hat is a head covering which is worn for various reasons, including protection against the elements, ceremonial reasons, religious reasons, safety, or as a fashion accessory. In the past, hats were an indicator of social status. In the military, hats may denote nationality, branch of service, rank and/or regiment.Police typically wear distinctive hats such as peaked caps or brimmed hats, such as those worn by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. Some hats have a protective function. As examples, the hard hat protects construction workers' heads from injury by falling objects and a British police Custodian helmet protects the officer's head, a sun hat shades the face and shoulders from the sun, a cowboy hat protects against sun and rain and a Ushanka fur hat with fold-down ear-flaps keeps the head and ears warm. Some hats are worn for ceremonial purposes, such as the mortarboard, which is worn (or carried) during university graduation ceremonies. Some hats are worn by members of a certain profession, such as the Toque worn by chefs. Some hats have a religious functions, such as the Mitres worn by Bishops and the turban worn by Sikhs.
Paper is a thin material produced by pressing together moist fibres of cellulose pulp derived from wood, rags or grasses, and drying them into flexible sheets. It is a versatile material with many uses, including writing, printing, packaging, cleaning, and a number of industrial and construction processes.
The pulp papermaking process is said to have been developed in China during the early 2nd century AD, possibly as early as the year 105 A.D., by the Han court eunuch Cai Lun, although the earliest archaeological fragments of paper derive from the 2nd century BC in China. The modern pulp and paper industry is global, with China leading its production and the United States right behind it.
The oldest known archaeological fragments of the immediate precursor to modern paper, date to the 2nd century BC in China. The pulp papermaking process is ascribed to Cai Lun, a 2nd-century AD Han court eunuch. With paper as an effective substitute for silk in many applications, China could export silk in greater quantity, contributing to a Golden Age.
The cowboy hat is a high-crowned, wide-brimmed hat best known as the defining piece of attire for the North American cowboy. Influenced by 19th century Mexican culture, today it is worn by many people, and is particularly associated with ranch workers in the western and southern United States, western Canada and northern Mexico, with country-western singers and ranchero singers in Mexico, and for participants in the North American rodeo circuit. It is recognized around the world as part of Old West lore. The shape of a cowboy hat's crown and brim are often modified by the wearer for fashion and to protect against weather.
It is an item of apparel that can be worn in any corner of the world, and receive immediate recognition as part of North American cowboy culture.
The first western model was the open-crowned "Boss of the Plains", and after that came the front-creased Carlsbad, destined to become “the” cowboy style. The high-crowned, wide-brimmed, soft-felt western hats that followed are intimately associated with the cowboy image.
Stephen Jones may refer to:
"Hats are made the same way... they all have to be shaped, trimmed and sewn by hand". In this video, milliner Philip Ian Wright provides a passionate and fascinating insight into the process of how to make a hat. No matter the shape, decade, style or fashion, the methods of hat-making are the same today as they have been for hundreds of years. You can buy one of Philip's wonderful hats from his site http://www.philipwrighthats.co.uk Video produced by Rumble TV http://www.rumbletelevision.com
Watch David of D Bar J Hat Company demonstrate how a custom hat is made by hand. Custom hats are made individually in the workshop to fit each individual's head. All of D Bar J hats start from the finest rabbit, hare and beaver fur. All of D Bar J Hat Company's machinery dates from the late 1800's to early 1900's. This is a hands-on craft. Every hat is special. Care is taken at every step of the way to ensure the owner is proud to wear the D Bar J brand. This video shows the techniques that are used to make many of the molded hat styles like custom cowboy hads, fedoras, top hats, and more.
Panama, Pork Pie, Bowler, Fedora—the hat is back. Reviving the traditional art of handmade haberdashery, the women of "Paul's Hat Works" in San Francisco guide us through their century-old hat-making process, from custom measurement and blocking of the felt blank to hand-stitched finishing and the final flange. The millinery workroom or atelier is the creative laboratory where hat designs are transformed from ideas into reality. In this video you can see one of Stephen Jones' creations come to life. In the words of Stephen Jones, a milliners workroom is half Aladdins cave and half artists studio, a place where each hat is carefully coaxed into being. This video was made for the Victoria & Albert Museum's exhibition 'Hats: An Anthology by Stephen Jones' 24 February - 31 May 2009.
Born in New York, brought up in the south west of France and now based in Los Angeles, Nick Fouquet's far-flung trips to Patagonia, Australia and across Europe inspired his eponymous hatmaking business that specialises in unconventional shapes. In an exclusive new video we spoke to Fouquet, who guides us through the sewing, steaming, fire treatment and sanding processes required to produce his vintage-inspired headwear line. "Hats should be as unique as the people who wear them," says Fouquet, who sources vintage woven fabrics and rare dyes from India and Japan during what he calls an "intuitive" creative process that differs from one hat to another. How to make a wet felt hat from black alpaca fibre. The video shows making a wet felt hat in real time, complete with rambling commentary! This is a long video so fast forward and dip into the parts that you are interested in. This is my method developed from internet research and trial and error, and no doubt there are other ways of doing it.
See the felt hat body making process in action as Richard Beene takes the Hatted Professor on a tour of the Winchester Hat Corporation's felting plant in Winchester, Tennessee. Starting with raw fur, Winchester makes felt hat bodies for Western and Dress hat custom hatters all over the United States. Richard Beene started with Hat Corporation of America in the mid-1960s, and continued on with Winchester Hat Corporation after HCA closed their hat business in 1972. Includes a brief discussion of the forming of the Cavanagh Edge for hats. Because the factory noise is so loud, the Closed Caption transcription is a close as it can be, and it a good way to watch this video the first time through.
In this video, I show you how to make a hat with a brim on a round knitting loom. I used the 36 peg loom which measures about 9 inches in diameter. If you use a different size loom than I did, you will use the same techniques just on a different scale. :) I bought my looms in a 4 pack set. They are the Knifty Knitter brand, but there are lots of brands out there now. I recommend doing these with either bulky weight yarn or two strands of worsted weight. Then all you need is the loom and a pick-style tool that comes with it and you're ready to go! Oh, and a tapestry needle of course! Thanks for watching!!!
