Taiwan Province (Chinese: 臺灣省 or 台灣省; pinyin: Táiwān Shěng; Pe̍h-ōe-jī: Tâi-oân Séng) is one of the two administrative divisions of the Republic of China (ROC) that are officially referred to as "provinces". The province covers approximately 69% of the actual-controlled territory of the ROC, with around 31% of the total population.
Geographically it covers the majority of the island of Taiwan as well as almost all of its surrounding islands, the largest of which are the Penghu archipelago, Green Island, Xiaoliuqiu Island and Orchid Island. Taiwan Province does not cover territories of the special municipalities of Kaohsiung, New Taipei, Taichung, Tainan, Taipei, and Taoyuan, all of which are located geographically within the main island of Taiwan. It also does not include the counties of Kinmen and Lienchiang, which are located alongside the southeast coast of mainland China and administered as a separate Fujian Province (not to be confused with the PRC's Fujian Province).
Provinces (Chinese: 省; pinyin: Shěng), formally provincial-level administrative divisions (Chinese: 省级行政区; pinyin: Shěng Jí Xíngzhèngqū) or first-level administrative divisions (Chinese: 一级行政区; pinyin: Yī Jí Xíngzhèngqū), are the highest-level Chinese administrative divisions. There are 34 such divisions, classified as 23 provinces (including Taiwan Province, which is claimed but not actually controlled by the People's Republic of China), four municipalities, five autonomous regions, and two Special Administrative Regions.
The People's Republic of China (PRC) claims sovereignty over the territory administered by the Republic of China (ROC), claiming most of it as its Taiwan Province. The ROC also administers some offshore islands which form Fujian Province, ROC. These were part of an originally unified Fujian province, which since the stalemate of the Chinese Civil War in 1949 has been divided between the PRC and ROC.
Note that every province (except Hong Kong and Macau, the two special administrative regions) has a Communist Party of China provincial committee (Chinese: 省委), headed by a secretary (Chinese: 书记). The committee secretary is in effective charge of the province, rather than the nominal governor of the provincial government.
"Taiwan, China" (simplified Chinese: 中国台湾; traditional Chinese: 中國臺灣 or "Taiwan, Province of China" simplified Chinese: 中国台湾省; traditional Chinese: 中國臺灣省) is a set of politically controversial and potentially ambiguous terms that characterize Taiwan and its associated territories as a province or territory of "China". In particular, the term "Taiwan, Province of China' often appears in the drop-down menu list of many websites and computer software that show a list of ISO 3166-1 country names (see UN and ISO section below). However, the term is problematic and potentially ambiguous because since 1949, two sovereign states with the name "China" exist, namely the Republic of China (ROC, founded 1912 and now commonly known as "Taiwan") and the People's Republic of China (PRC, founded 1949 and now commonly known as "China"). However, only one "China" actually rules Taiwan, namely Republic of China, and has an administrative division called "Taiwan Province" but refers to it as "Taiwan Province, Republic of China"; whereas, the other "China", namely the People's Republic of China, which is the one internationally recognized as "China" (not the ROC), claims but does not control Taiwan as part of its territory.
Taipei (/ˌtaɪˈpeɪ/, literally means "North of Tai(wan)"), officially known as Taipei City (Chinese: 臺北市 or 台北市; pinyin: Táiběi Shì; Pe̍h-ōe-jī: Tâi-pak Chhī), is the capital city and a special municipality of Taiwan. Sitting at the northern tip of Taiwan, Taipei City is an enclave of the municipality of New Taipei City. It is about 25 km (16 mi) southwest of the northern port city Keelung. The city is mostly located on the Taipei Basin, an ancient lakebed bounded by the two relatively narrow valleys of the Keelung and Xindian rivers, which join to form the Tamsui River along the city's western border.
The city proper is home to an estimated population of 2,693,672 in 2009, forming the core part of the Taipei–Keelung metropolitan area which includes the nearby cities of New Taipei and Keelung with a population of 6,900,273, the 40th most-populous urban area in the world. The name "Taipei" can refer either to the whole metropolitan area or the city proper.
Taipei is the political, economic, educational, and cultural center of Taiwan, and one of the major hubs of the Chinese-speaking world. Considered to be a global city, Taipei is part of a major high-tech industrial area.Railways, high-speed rail, highways, airports, and bus lines connect Taipei with all parts of the island. The city is served by two airports – Taipei Songshan and Taiwan Taoyuan. Taipei is home to various world-famous architectural or cultural landmarks which include Taipei 101, Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall, Dalongdong Baoan Temple, Hsing Tian Kong, Mengjia Longshan Temple, National Palace Museum, Presidential Office Building, Taipei Guest House, Ximending, and several night markets dispersing over the city. Its natural features such as Maokong, Yangmingshan, and hot springs are also well known to international visitors.

Taiwan (i/ˌtaɪˈwɑːn/; Chinese: 臺灣 or 台灣; see below), officially the Republic of China (ROC; Chinese: 中華民國; pinyin: Zhōnghuá Mínguó), is a sovereign state in East Asia. The Republic of China, originally based in mainland China, now governs the island of Taiwan, which constitutes more than 99% of its territory, as well as Penghu, Kinmen, Matsu, and other minor islands, following its loss of the mainland China territory in 1949 in the Chinese Civil War. This remaining area is also constitutionally called the "Free area of the Republic of China" which is not ruled by the Communist Party of China in Beijing.
Neighboring states include the People's Republic of China (PRC) to the west (mainland China), Japan to the east and northeast, and the Philippines to the south. Taiwan is one of the most densely populated countries in the world with a population density of 649 people per km2 in October 2015.Taipei is the seat of the central government, and together with the surrounding cities of New Taipei and Keelung forms the largest metropolitan area on the island.

It's from the shores of Ly Son island, situated thirty kilometres from the port of Sa Ky, on the coast of the central province of Quang Ngai, that the Vietnamese fishermen depart for their journey to the Hoang Sa archipelago. Hoang Sa or Paracel, as internationally recognized. A group of islands disputed among China, Taiwan and Vietnam. The sea breeze surrounds the volcanic island already used in the seventh century by the Champa kingdom as ship basement for their maritime trade routes. Ten centuries later Nguyen Lords came. The rulers of Dai Viet--the great Viet--settled on the island, transforming it into the operational area of the company Hoang Sa, exclusively for the development of the Paracel Islands. Every year the Nguyen Lords used to recruit seventy sailors from the villages of An...
This film was shot in in the Chinese province of YuanNan in the village of Jian Xiang, which sits on the border between China and Myanmar., where the local people speak two different languages. During my visit to the village I came across a very beautiful lotus lake. When I got closer I saw that there were two groups of children, one on either side of the lake, conversing with each other in what seemed like a language they invented from mixing Chinese and Myanmar. My interest in this scenario as a subject for my video work was not the content of this conversation (I could not understand it anyway) but the unexpected poignancy* of the scene. It brought back strong memories of growing up in Taiwan (my father originally came from China) and trying to exist between two cultures. The interact...
[Wang Jia Bay ] My grandfather was born in 1917 and Wang Jia Bay being his hometown is also the roots where my ancestors come from. In 1938, my grandfather was forced to evacuate from his home town when Japanese invasion took place in China at his young age of 21. Since then, he started his long journey roving and fled to Taiwan with the government of KMT. Seventy three years have gone by and he is now 95 years old, but he has never once gone back to visit his hometown again ever since he left. Wang Jia Bay is a small village located in the southern Hefei of the province of Anhui, China. This beautiful village sits in front of the river bend, and behind it there is boundless paddy field with fresh green. Ninety percent of the residents in the neighborhood area have the same last name – ...

Hsu Chia-Wei's new video installation engages with the history of a tiny island off the coast of Matsu, which is situated in the Taiwan Strait. During the Qing Dynasty, the island was the site of a tiny temple. When Chiang Kai-Shek retreated to Taiwan, the temple was dismantled and relocated to a larger neighboring island, and a bunker was constructed in its place. At present, the bunker is a ruin and ownership of the island has been transferred again to the proprietors of the original temple. The island is also under the commandment of a local god called the "Ironclad Marshal," a frog deity. This deity originated from a temple located on Wu-Yi Mountain in China, which was destroyed during the Cultural Revolution, at which point the deity migrated to Matsu. In Hsu Chia-Wei's work, the isla...

Transcript: Thank you for the very generous introduction of me. And I thank all of you for coming this evening to hear my lecture. It is really wonderful to be here - this time Mother Nature finally allowed me to fly into this part of globe. I was very sorry for the postponement of my lecture [which] has inconvenienced many, including my colleagues at the V&A;. My talk today is about the national museums of the People's Republic of China, Japan, and the Republic of Korea and the issu...

Travel video about destination Taiwan. Taiwan is an island of gods, ghosts and pagodas with an abundance of legendary treasures and a cultural inheritance that can still be seen in all its age-old splendour. Numerous of its sanctuaries reflect the traditional culture of China and in contrast to the People’s Republic, here Chinese culture has been extremely well preserved. With around two and a half million inhabitants Taipei is the island’s largest city and also the capital of Taiwan, a metropolis that reflects both old and new. Taipei’s Bao-An Temple was dedicated to the deity of medicine, Baosheng Dadi, a god that was once mainly worshipped in the Chinese province of Fujian. In contrast to the island’s many other sanctuaries the Chih Nan temple complex is inhabited by around fifty monk...
I have always loved travelling. I was lucky enough that from a young age, my parents took us all over the place, instilling in us a sense of larger spaces and broadened horizons. As I grew up, I became more independent in my travels and tried to figure out ways to do it more. From learning Spanish in Salamanca to purposefully getting 6 month summer jobs in places I wanted to explore further. I became accustomed to getting lost and just wondering the streets, figuring out where would be the next good meal or when I would stumble onto some secret only locals whispered about. Getting lost was second nature back then. The only resources we had were over-read guide books that by the time you reached their recommendations, the waiters would push their best sellers down your throats. So we h...
