Stoning of the Devil
The Stoning of the Devil (Arabic: رمي الجمرات ramī al-jamarāt, lit. "stoning of the jamarāt [place of pebbles]") is part of the annual Islamic Hajj pilgrimage to the holy city of Mecca in Saudi Arabia. Muslim pilgrims throw pebbles at three walls (formerly pillars), called jamarāt, in the city of Mina just east of Mecca. It is one of a series of ritual acts that must be performed in the Hajj. It is a symbolic reenactment of Abraham's hajj, where he stoned three pillars representing the temptation to disobey God and preserve Ishmael.
On Eid al-Adha (the 10th day of the month of Dhu al-Hijjah), pilgrims must strike only one of the large jamrah with seven pebbles. After the stoning is completed on the day of Eid, every pilgrim must cut or shave their hair. On each of the following two days, they must hit each of the three walls with seven pebbles, going in order from east to west. Thus at least 49 pebbles are needed for the ritual, more if some throws miss. Some pilgrims stay at Mina for an additional day, in which case they must again stone each wall seven times. The pebbles used in the stoning are traditionally gathered at Muzdalifah, a plain southeast of Mina, on the night before the first throwing, but can also be collected at Mina.

Plot: Aspiring actress Louise Muban attends the prestigious Paris School of Drama during the day and works at a dreary factory assembling gas meters at night. Mecca comprises unmatched characteristics on religious, historical and cultural levels, which has earned it a special status for entire humanity. That is what drove the British Museum in London to hold the first exhibition of its kind under the title "Journey to the Heart of Islam" to explore the holy city. Wearing white robes to symbolise purity and equality under God, (m) millions of Muslims continued their annual pilgrimage on Sunday in the Saudi holy city of Mina for the stoning of Satan, the last and most dangerous rite of the annual Hajj.
To complete their rituals, pilgrims must throw 21 pebbles at each of three 25-metre (82-foot) pillars that represent Satan in a symbolic rejection of temptation.
Hundreds of people have been killed in stampedes in several previous pilgrimages to the sites when the pilgrims cast pebbles at the pillars.
On Sunday, the military was helping maintain security to avoid any accidents.
So far this year, no major incidents have been reported among the pilgrims.
The Mashair Railway, also known as the Mecca Metro, a two-track light railway connecting the three holy sites of Mina, Muzdalifah and Mount Arafat, was operating for the first time this year to ease congestion.
Some 2.5 (m) million people were expected to take part in the five-day event that started on Saturday.
This year's hajj takes place amid an unprecedented wave of anti-government protests in the Arab world which has toppled autocrats in Tunisia, Egypt and Libya.
Uprisings have also shaken regimes in Yemen, Bahrain and Syria.
While Muslims see the hajj as a time to seek forgiveness for one's sins and for individual meditation on the faith, the unrest across the region remained at the forefront of the minds of many pilgrims.
Hajj is the oldest and most sacred ritual of Islam that every able-bodied Muslim who can financially afford the trip must perform once in a lifetime.
The pious journey brings together the many nations that make up the 1.3 (b) billion Muslims worldwide.
The day also marked the start of the Islamic holiday of Eid al-Adha, or "Feast of Sacrifice", when Muslims around the world slaughter sheep and cattle in remembrance of Abraham's near-sacrifice of his son.

Having grown up in Austria, I had never made it to the Czech Republic, one of our neighbouring countries. Prague, in particular, had interested me for a long time, but I had never had a chance to visit it. Well, on June 1, finally, I was on my way to explore Prague, one of Europe's most popular tourist destinations. I took the train from Vienna, enjoyed a great conversation with a young Czech lady from Brno who is now living in Berlin, and finally around 3 pm I made it into the Holesovice Railway Station in Prague.
Later that afternoon and evening I took a personal tour of the Old Town area with local expert Jitka Simkova and her colleague Karel. We started on St. Wenceslav Square, with its early 20th century architecture, and walked through narrow cobble-stoned streets into the centre of Prague: Old Town Square. This expansive public square features two of the main attractions of Prague: the Old Town Hall with its famous astronomical clock, and the Gothic Church of Our Lady before Tyn with its distinctive roofline. Kinsky Palace and the Church of St. Nicholas along with a variety of pastel-coloured medieval houses impressed me as one of the most beautiful European squares I had ever seen.
We continued our walk to the famous historical Charles Bridge whose construction started in 1357 and continued for about 150 years. Walking back through the narrow streets we stopped at a typical Czech beer hall, U Medvikdku, where I got to taste some authentic Czech beer brewed on site. I also enjoyed pork tail and potato pancakes, a typical Czech dish.
On June 2 I got a tour through the historic Hotel Jalta, where I was staying, which dates back to the post-war era and is now a designated landmark. Then I enjoyed another tour and a delicious lunch just steps away at the historic Hotel Radisson SAS Alcron which distinguishes itself with its stunning Art Deco inspired interior. In the afternoon, Petra, my tour guide, took me to Strahov Monastery where I saw one of the most stunning Baroque libraries.
From there we explored the Loreto and Prague Castle with one of its main sights: the breathtaking St. Vitus Cathedral. The vaulted interior with its colourful stained-glass windows makes it one of the most impressive Gothic buildings anywhere.
On my final day in Prague I took a tour with my knowledgeable guide Richard through Josefov, the Jewish Quarter of Prague. Prague is intricately connected with famous writer Franz Kafka, and reminders of his past can be seen all over the Jewish Quarter. Formerly the Jewish ghetto, most of this area of town was demolished between 1893 and 1913 and reconstructed along the lines of the Parisian reconstruction.
Because the Nazis wanted to create an "exotic museum for an instinct race", many of the Jewish building are actually still left in Josefov. These include six synagogues, the Jewish cemetery and the Old Jewish Town Hall. Then Richard and I got an introduction to Jewish cuisine at the kosher King Solomon restaurant. Today's Josefov features a large number of impressive Art Nouveau apartment houses.
Richard then took me to Municipal House, a magnificent civic landmark and concert hall that was constructed between 1905 and 1912. It features stunning Art Nouveau architecture and amazing murals by the famous painter Alfons Mucha. In the second half of the afternoon I went on a boat trip on the Vltava River which gave me a completely different viewpoint of Prague from the water.
After another walk on the Charles Bridge, I crossed over into Mala Strana, the Little Quarter, on the other side of the river. I took the funicular up to Petrin Hill, where I admired a miniature version of the Eiffel Tower. Then I walked over to the Hradčany Hill which is the location of Prague Castle, which is said to be the largest castle in the world. I enjoyed a great outdoor dinner at the foot of the castle hill, overlooking the city.
On the morning of June 4 I took the bus from Prague to Telč, a city close to the Austrian border. My brother and my sister-in-law met me there and we jointly explored this UNESCO World Heritage Site. The pastel-coloured Renaissance houses on the main square, the castle, the Church of the Ascension of Mary and the pond behind main square made this a great final stop on my explorations of the Czech Republic.

Having grown up in Austria, I had never made it to the Czech Republic, one of our neighbouring countries. Prague, in particular, had interested me for a long time, but I had never had a chance to visit it. Well, on June 1, finally, I was on my way to explore Prague, one of Europe's most popular tourist destinations. I took the train from Vienna, enjoyed a great conversation with a young Czech lady from Brno who is now living in Berlin, and finally around 3 pm I made it into the Holesovice Railway Station in Prague.
Later that afternoon and evening I took a personal tour of the Old Town area with local expert Jitka Simkova and her colleague Karel. We started on St. Wenceslav Square, with its early 20th century architecture, and walked through narrow cobble-stoned streets into the centre of Prague: Old Town Square. This expansive public square features two of the main attractions of Prague: the Old Town Hall with its famous astronomical clock, and the Gothic Church of Our Lady before Tyn with its distinctive roofline. Kinsky Palace and the Church of St. Nicholas along with a variety of pastel-coloured medieval houses impressed me as one of the most beautiful European squares I had ever seen.
We continued our walk to the famous historical Charles Bridge whose construction started in 1357 and continued for about 150 years. Walking back through the narrow streets we stopped at a typical Czech beer hall, U Medvikdku, where I got to taste some authentic Czech beer brewed on site. I also enjoyed pork tail and potato pancakes, a typical Czech dish.
On June 2 I got a tour through the historic Hotel Jalta, where I was staying, which dates back to the post-war era and is now a designated landmark. Then I enjoyed another tour and a delicious lunch just steps away at the historic Hotel Radisson SAS Alcron which distinguishes itself with its stunning Art Deco inspired interior. In the afternoon, Petra, my tour guide, took me to Strahov Monastery where I saw one of the most stunning Baroque libraries.
From there we explored the Loreto and Prague Castle with one of its main sights: the breathtaking St. Vitus Cathedral. The day after they spend the night in prayer in Mina before proceeding to mount Arafat.
On the way back, they throw stones at the three pillars, which symbolizes their defiance of the Devil.
As AFP reported, "The ritual [of throwing stones] is an emulation of Ibrahim's stoning of the Devil when he appeared at three spots trying to dissuade the biblical patriarch from obeying God's order to sacrifice his son, Ishmael."

Masruq said: "While a man was giving a speech among the people of Kindah, he said, 'There will be smoke on the Day of Resurrection which will deprive the hypocrites of their hearing and sight, but the believers will only suffer something like a cold' We were terrified, so we went to Ibn Masud, who was reclining. When he heard about this, he became angry and sat up, and said: 'O people, whoever knows a thing, let him say it; but whoever does not know, let him say, "Allah knows best." It is a part of knowledge, when one does not know something, to say "Allah knows best." Allah SWT said to His Prophet Mohammad (sallallahu alayhe wa sallam): "Say: 'No reward do I ask of you for this (Qur'an), nor am I a pretender'" (Sad 38:86.)

I said, 'O Messenger of Allah, we were lost in ignorance (Jahiliyyah) and evil, then Allah brought this good (i.e. Islam). Will some evil come after this good thing?' He said, 'Yes' I asked, 'And will some good come after that evil?' He said, 'Yes, but it will be tainted with some evil' I asked, 'How will it be tainted?' He said, 'There will be some people who will lead others on a path different from mine. You will see good and bad in them. I asked, 'Will some evil come after that good?' He said, 'Some people will be standing and calling at the gates of Hell; whoever responds to their call, they will throw him into the Fire.' I said, 'O Messenger of Allah, describe them for us.' He said, 'They will be from our own people, and will speak our language.' I asked, 'What do you advise me to do if I should live to see that?' He said, 'Stick to the main body (jama'ah) of the Muslims and their leader (Imam). I asked, What if there is no main body and no leader?' He said 'Isolate yourself from all of these sects, even if you have to eat the roots of trees until death overcomes you while you are in that state.'"
'Abd Allah ibn Mas'ud said: "The Prophet said, 'Islam began as something strange, and it will revert to being strange as it was in the beginning, so good tidings for the strangers.' Someone asked, 'Who are the strangers?' He said, 'The ones who break away from their people (literally, 'tribes') for the sake of Islam.' "This Hadith was narrated by Ibn Majah on the authority of Anas and Abu Hurairah.
'Abd Allah said, "The Prophet said, 'Just before the Hour, there will be days in which knowledge will disappear and ignorance will appear, and there will be much killing.' "

Mecca comprises unmatched characteristics on religious, historical and cultural levels, which has earned it a special status for entire humanity. That is what drove the British Museum in London to hold the first exhibition of its kind under the title "Journey to the Heart of Islam" to explore the holy city. The King Abdul Aziz Public Library represents the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in this exhibition.
The following report tells the story of Mina and Muzdalifah.
Pilgrims travel to Muzdalifah from Arafat on the 10th of Dhu al-Hijjah. There they perform shortened sunset and evening prayers and from there they take the pebbles with which they stone the devil in Mina.
The name Muzdalifah is said to have been derived from the word "zalaf," Arabic for "beginning," because pilgrims travel there in the beginning of the night. The same word also means to "come close to something" since it is through it that pilgrims are closer to the Grand Mosque.
Muzdalifah is located half way between Mina and Arafat in middle of the two Arafa mounts. It is the natural extension of the Mina Valley and is devoid of any buildings with the exception of one mosque known as the Muzdalifah Mosque and which was built in the spot in which the ritual takes place.
In Muzdalifah, praying, supplication, and asking for forgiveness are favorable.
After spending the night at Muzdalifah, where the ritual place was expanded and supplied with all facilities for the comfort of worshippers, pilgrims head to Mina at sunrise.
"After they were in Arafat, in Hil, they came closer to al-Haram (the holy mosque) and Muzdalifah, which is part of al-Haram, until they reached the Kaaba. So they were becoming closer and closer to the Kaaba from Araft to Mina. Mina is at a stone throw distance from Muzdalifah. They are separated by Mohassir river, in which Allah destroyed the Companions of the Elephant, Abraha and his soldiers," Dr. Ahmed al-Mawraaei, faculty member, Umm al-Qura University.
Mina, the third place to which pilgrims head after Arafat and Muzdalifah, is a valley surrounded by hills and is located around five kilometers east of Mecca.
Pilgrims first go to Mina on the 8th of Dhu al-Hijjah where they spend the day starting with the noon prayers then spend the night and head to Arafat following the sunrise prayers.
After Arafat, pilgrims head to Muzdalifah then back to Mina on the dawn of the 10th of Dhu al-Hijjah and there they perform the ritual of stoning the devil through throwing stones at the pillars or walls known as "jamarat."
The ritual lasts for three days during which they stone the biggest pillar, known as "jamarat al-Aqaba," and the other two, known as "al-Jamra al-Wusta" and "al-Jamra al-Sughra."
