A race's host city isn't merely a backdrop—it's the very stage where the drama unfolds. The riders are its performers. The roads and cobbled climbs are its props. The course profile, its libretto. And when all is in motion on the stage, they play off of the rich textures and culture of the city.
For this year's UCI Road World Championships, the stage will be set by the city of Richmond, Virginia. So we found it prudent to examine the vibrant elements that make up the colors of Richmond, and how they work together to be the perfect host for the most prestigious one-day event in all of cycling.
On our journey, we meet a handful of the key players of the zeitgeist, from artists to artisans, and get their take on what makes Richmond, not only the perfect course for Worlds, but also the perfect place to live.
Richmond. It's where the South meets the North, where old meets new, and where cycling, in all of its forms, has found a welcoming, permanent home. The stage is set—now it's time to ride.

Richmond is the capital of the Commonwealth of Virginia, in the United States. It is an independent city and not part of any county. Richmond is the center of the Richmond Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) and the Greater Richmond area. Geographically, Richmond is located at the fall line of the James River, 44 miles (71 km) west of Williamsburg, 66 miles (106 km) east of Charlottesville, and 98 miles (158 km) south of Washington, D.C. Surrounded by Henrico and Chesterfield counties, the city is located at the intersections of Interstate 95 and Interstate 64, and encircled by Interstate 295 and Virginia State Route 288.
The site of Richmond had been an important village of the Powhatan Confederacy, and was briefly settled by English colonists from Jamestown in 1609, and in 1610--1611. The present city of Richmond was founded in 1737. It became the capital of the Colony and Dominion of Virginia in 1780. During the Revolutionary War period, several notable events occurred in the city, including Patrick Henry's "Give me liberty or give me death" speech in 1775 at St. John's Church, and the passage of the Virginia Statute for Religious Freedom written by Thomas Jefferson. During the American Civil War, Richmond served as the capital of the Confederate States of America. The city entered the 20th century with one of the world's first successful electric streetcar systems, as well as a national hub of African-American commerce and culture, the Jackson Ward neighborhood.
Richmond's economy is primarily driven by law, finance, and government, with federal, state, and local governmental agencies, as well as notable legal and banking firms, located in the downtown area. The city is home to both the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit, one of 13 United States courts of appeals, and the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond, one of 12 Federal Reserve Banks. Dominion Resources and MeadWestvaco, Fortune 500 companies, are headquartered in the city, with others in the metropolitan area.[9] Tourism is also important, as many historic sites are in or nearby the city.

Richmond, Virginia
Richmond (/ˈrɪtʃmənd/ RICH-mənd) is the capital of the Commonwealth of Virginia, in the United States. It is the center of the Richmond Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) and the Greater Richmond Region. While it was incorporated in 1742, Richmond has been an independent city since 1871.
As of the 2010 census, the population was 204,214; in 2014, the population was estimated to be 217,853, the fourth-most populous city in Virginia. The Richmond Metropolitan Area has a population of 1,260,029, the third-most populous metro in the state.
Richmond is located at the fall line of the James River, 44 miles (71 km) west of Williamsburg, 66 miles (106 km) east of Charlottesville, and 98 miles (158 km) south of Washington, D.C. Surrounded by Henrico and Chesterfield counties, the city is located at the intersections of Interstate 95 and Interstate 64, and encircled by Interstate 295 and Virginia State Route 288. Major suburbs include Midlothian to the southwest, Glen Allen to the north and west, Short Pump to the west and Mechanicsville to the northeast.

Donald Trump
Donald John Trump, Sr. (born June 14, 1946) is an American businessperson and media personality. He is the chairman and president of The Trump Organization and the founder of Trump Entertainment Resorts. Trump's career, branding efforts, personal life, wealth, and outspoken manner have made him famous throughout the country. Since 2015, he is also a candidate for the Republican nomination for President of the United States in the 2016 election.
Trump is a native of New York City and a son of Fred Trump, who inspired him to enter real estate development. After two years at Fordham University and while studying at Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, Trump worked for his father's firm, Elizabeth Trump & Son. Upon graduating in 1968 he joined the company, and in 1971 was given control, renaming the company "The Trump Organization". Since then he has built hotels, golf courses, and other properties, many of which bear his name. He is a major figure in the American business scene and has received prominent media exposure. The NBC reality show The Apprentice bolstered his fame, and his three marriages were extensively reported in tabloids.

For this year's UCI Road World Championships, the stage will be set by the city of Richmond, Virginia. So we found it prudent to examine the vibrant elements that make up the colors of Richmond, and how they work together to be the perfect host for the most prestigious one-day event in all of cycling.
On our journey, we meet a handful of the key players of the zeitgeist, from artists to artisans, and get their take on what makes Richmond, not only the perfect course for Worlds, but also the perfect place to live.
Richmond. It's where the South meets the North, where old meets new, and where cycling, in all of its forms, has found a welcoming, permanent home. The stage is set—now it's time to ride.

Richmond's economy is primarily driven by law, finance, and government, with federal, state, and local governmental agencies, as well as notable legal and banking firms, located in the downtown area. The city is home to both the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit, one of 13 United States courts of appeals, and the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond, one of 12 Federal Reserve Banks. Dominion Resources and MeadWestvaco, Fortune 500 companies, are headquartered in the city, with others in the metropolitan area.[9] Tourism is also important, as many historic sites are in or nearby the city.

Richmond Police: Phone threat against law enforcement ‘not credible’
RICHMOND, Va. – Police have deemed a threat made to law enforcement Saturday "not credible" after locating the phone and its owner Sunday. Richmond Police spokesperson Gene Lepley told CBS 6 that the owner told investigators that he had loaned his phone to a friend earlier that day to make a call. Richmond police launched the investigation after someone called 911 around noon Saturday and made a threat against law enforcement. That call was answered at the city's communications center. The department has an audio recording of the call, but has not elaborated on exactly what was said other than to say it was not a death threat. Additionally, some threats against officers have been posted on social media. Lepley said the investigation is ongoing. -

RICHMOND, Va. -- Virginia State Police are investigating a shooting near I-95 in Richmond that sent a man to the hospital Sunday night. Corinne Geller, Public Relations Director for Virginia State Police, said troopers received a “Be on the Look Out” from Richmond Police for a vehicle involved in a shooting near Maury Street and I-95. "State police located the vehicle and an individual suffering from gunshot wounds," Geller said. Officials with RPD confirmed a man was taken to the hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening. VDOT said the entrance ramp from Maury Street to I-95 south was closed because of the shooting and that drivers should use an alternate route. -

Richmond Police spokesperson Gene Lepley told CBS 6 that the owner told investigators that he had loaned his phone to a friend earlier that day to make a call.
Richmond police launched the investigation after someone called 911 around noon Saturday and made a threat against law enforcement. That call was answered at the city's communications center.
The department has an audio recording of the call, but has not elaborated on exactly what was said other than to say it was not a death threat.
Additionally, some threats against officers have been posted on social media.
Lepley said the investigation is ongoing.

Corinne Geller, Public Relations Director for Virginia State Police, said troopers received a “Be on the Look Out” from Richmond Police for a vehicle involved in a shooting near Maury Street and I-95.
"State police located the vehicle and an individual suffering from gunshot wounds," Geller said.
Officials with RPD confirmed a man was taken to the hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening.
VDOT said the entrance ramp from Maury Street to I-95 south was closed because of the shooting and that drivers should use an alternate route.
