Oregon Inlet is an inlet along North Carolina's Outer Banks. It joins the Pamlico Sound with the Atlantic Ocean and separates Bodie Island from Pea Island, which are connected by the 2.5 mile Herbert C. Bonner Bridge that spans the inlet. As one of the few access points to the ocean along this stretch of coast, Oregon Inlet is a major departure point for charter fishing trips, with a nearby harbor serving as the base for many large boats that travel miles out towards the Gulf Stream almost every day. The inlet is also the location of a U.S. Coast Guard station.
Oregon Inlet was formed when a hurricane lashed the Outer Banks in 1846, separating Bodie Island from Pea Island. One ship that rode out that storm in Pamlico Sound was named the Oregon. After the storm the crew members of this ship were the first to tell those on the mainland about the inlet's formation. Hence, it has been known as Oregon Inlet ever since.
Akin to many other inlets along the Outer Banks, Oregon Inlet moves southward due to drifting sands during tides and storms. It has moved south over two miles since 1846, averaging around 66 feet per year.
Oregon (i/ˈɔːrᵻɡən/ AWR-ə-gən) is a state in the Pacific Northwest region of the United States. Oregon is bordered on the west by the Pacific Ocean, on the north by Washington, on the south by California, on the east by Idaho, and on the southeast by Nevada. The Columbia River delineates much of Oregon's northern boundary, and the Snake River delineates much of the eastern boundary. The parallel 42° north delineates the southern boundary with California and Nevada. It is one of only three states of the contiguous United States to have a coastline on the Pacific Ocean, and the proximity to the ocean heavily influences the state's mild winter climate, despite the latitude.
Oregon was inhabited by many indigenous tribes before Western traders, explorers, and settlers arrived. An autonomous government was formed in the Oregon Country in 1843, the Oregon Territory was created in 1848, and Oregon became the 33rd state on February 14, 1859. Today, at 98,000 square miles, Oregon is the ninth largest and, with a population of 4 million, 26th most populous U.S. state. The capital of Oregon is Salem, the second most populous of its cities, with 160,614 residents (2013 estimate). With 609,456 residents (2013 estimate), Portland is the largest city in Oregon and ranks 29th in the U.S. Its metro population of 2,314,554 (2013 estimate) is 24th. The Willamette Valley in western Oregon is the state's most densely populated area, home to eight of the ten most populous cities.

Boat behind us heading out of Oregon Inlet yesterday. Wish I had started filming all of this from the time we went under the bridge.
Went fishing from shore at the Oregon Inlet for a couple hours today. It was a very windy day with steady winds at 25 mph and gust much higher. Luckily this spot was sheltered by the Bridge and the Jetty rocks.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Wilmington (N.C.) District's shallowdraft vessel MURDEN helps provide safe passage for mariners who use the federal channel at Oregon Inlet near Manteo to get to the Atlantic Ocean. The dynamics of Oregon Inlet mean constant removal of submerged obstacles called shoals. When funding is available, the captain and crew of the MURDEN work non-stop to clear the channel. The vessel can carry the equivalent of up to 50 dump truck loads of dredged material. It releases that material by splitting its hull in an authorized disposal area. (USACE video by Hank Heusinkveld)

Watch Part 1: http://bit.ly/1GMbEAX In the final episode of the MUNCHIES Guide to Oregon, Gabi seeks out people who are embodying Oregon’s pioneering spirit in pursuit of filling their bellies. From the best Liége waffles west of Belgium to yellowfoot mushrooms and Oregon white truffles dug fresh from the earth, she discovers what these Oregonians already know: that food always tastes better when you work for it. We start in the city of Eugene, where Gabi makes a detour to pick a local commodity to barter for her breakfast at Off the Waffle. Then she heads deep into the forest to meet up with Toby Esthay and his dog Appa and root out the elusive “orgasm-inducing” Oregon truffle. Gabi finishes her journey with a chef who is embodying Oregon’s do-it-yourself ethos: Kelsey Terry of Homegrow...

We drove down to the Outer Banks of North Carolina to do some stand up paddleboarding and beach relaxing. We slept in Virginia the first night just outside of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge and Tunnel. In the morning we continued on our journey and found some North Carolinian delicacies...boiled peanuts. They were actually quite good, but super salty. We finally made it to the Frisco Campground in the Cape Hatteras National Sea Shore and managed to set up the tent in between the thunderstorms. The Frisco campground was supposed to be one of the nicer ones because it actually has privacy between the sites and some good views of the ocean from the sites. We set up on top of the hill and had a really secluded site and a great view of the ocean. I would highly recommend this campground over th...

It's one of the most dangerous places on the planet and the Columbia River Bar is often termed the "Graveyard of the Pacific." Here, the wind, weather and ocean conditions can change in a heartbeat and it becomes a place where mistakes can mean disaster. In nearby Astoria, visitors gain a new respect for the dangerous bar indoors on a visit to the Columbia River Maritime Museum. The center tells many stories that surround the place where the mighty Columbia meets the sea; historic tales of development following Lewis and Clark's exploration -- the transport of goods, the salmon fishing industries, the timber mill industries, the US Coast Guard -- Oregon history is are all here and set against the dramatic backdrop of the Columbia River.

See how it was in 2 old-time logging museums and learn why our forests and resources are being shut down (hear testimony from spotted owl hearings in Creswell, Oregon). Also a trip to Jewell, Oregon to see what happened when the timber ran out. Then a trip to Collier State Park and see much of the old time logging equipment.
