Hi guys! Today we're making this awsome miniature Koi fish pond :D You need a little bit of patience for this project, since it uses both glue and resin, which both have to air dry, but the result is worth it! The fish are made from polymer clay and painted with acrylic paint. I also made a small bridge to go across the pond, which just adds a little extra to the final look ^^
Good to know:
I work in 1:12 scale, but you can make them in any size you want and add headpins to make them charms :) I used a mix of the polymer clay brands Fimo and Cernit, but you can use any brand you like. The liquid clay I use is from the brand Fimo. My mold maker is from Siligum/Sili-put.

How to Make a Rain forest in a Shoe Box - School Project (Kevin's Rainforest). This project was about 7-8 hours long to do (with the details it has) so we decided to record it in stop motion, this way you can see it built in under 15 minutes. We had a lot of fun doing it, hope you enjoy it. The water is a liquid called "Realistic Water" by Woodland Scenics and "Water Effects" by Woodland Scenics. For the darker blue water we used "Blue Realistic Water" by Scene A Rama.

In this talk I will describe a process oriented model that integrates physical, biogeochemical, ecological and physiological factors governing bivalve populated marine ecosystems. This modelling tool is the result of the coupling between an individual-based population model for bivalves (based on the DEB theory) and a hydrodynamic/biogeochemical model (MOHID). The model was implemented in the Balgzand area (Wadden Sea, The Netherlands) in a fine resolution domain to study mussel population dynamics and to quantify the influence of mussel communities on the pelagic system. I will describe some of the main results and achievements of this work but also the main uncertainties on the data, on the model setup and on the processes description as a step into the possible future applications

Ecosystem model
An ecosystem model is an abstract, usually mathematical, representation of an ecological system (ranging in scale from an individual population, to an ecological community, or even an entire biome), which is studied to gain understanding of the real system.
Using data gathered from the field, ecological relationships — such as the relation of sunlight and water availability to photosynthetic rate, or that between predator and prey populations — are derived, and these are combined to form ecosystem models. These model systems are then studied in order to make predictions about the dynamics of the real system. Often, the study of inaccuracies in the model (when compared to empirical observations) will lead to the generation of hypotheses about possible ecological relations that are not yet known or well understood. Models enable researchers to simulate large-scale experiments that would be too costly or unethical to perform on a real ecosystem. They also enable the simulation of ecological processes over very long periods of time (i.e. simulating a process that takes centuries in reality, can be done in a matter of minutes in a computer model).

Hi guys! Today we're making this awsome miniature Koi fish pond :D You need a little bit of patience for this project, since it uses both glue and resin, which both have to air dry, but the result is worth it! The fish are made from polymer clay and painted with acrylic paint. I also made a small bridge to go across the pond, which just adds a little extra to the final look ^^
Good to know:
I work in 1:12 scale, but you can make them in any size you want and add headpins to make them charms :) I used a mix of the polymer clay brands Fimo and Cernit, but you can use any brand you like. The liquid clay I use is from the brand Fimo. My mold maker is from Siligum/Sili-put.

In this talk I will describe a process oriented model that integrates physical, biogeochemical, ecological and physiological factors governing bivalve populated marine ecosystems. This modelling tool is the result of the coupling between an individual-based population model for bivalves (based on the DEB theory) and a hydrodynamic/biogeochemical model (MOHID). The model was implemented in the Balgzand area (Wadden Sea, The Netherlands) in a fine resolution domain to study mussel population dynamics and to quantify the influence of mussel communities on the pelagic system. I will describe some of the main results and achievements of this work but also the main uncertainties on the data, on the model setup and on the processes description as a step into the possible future applications

Keynote by Sofia Saraiva for the 5th International Symposium on Dynamic Energy Budget theory (31 may - june 02 2017, Tromsø)

In this talk I will describe a process oriented model that integrates physical, biogeochemical, ecological and physiological factors governing bivalve populated marine ecosystems. This modelling tool is the result of the coupling between an individual-based population model for bivalves (based on the DEB theory) and a hydrodynamic/biogeochemical model (MOHID). The model was implemented in the Balgzand area (Wadden Sea, The Netherlands) in a fine resolution domain to study mussel population dynamics and to quantify the influence of mussel communities on the pelagic system. I will describe some of the main results and achievements of this work but also the main uncertainties on the data, on the model setup and on the processes description as a step into the possible future applications

Cheese as a model microbial ecosystem - Rachel Dutton (Harvard)

However, little is known about how different microbial species interact with each other and their environment to form these communities. Rachel Dutton uses cheese as a model system for studying microbial ecosystems. By studying microbial communities in different types of cheese, and observing how they change during the cheese aging process, Dutton has uncovered many of the complexities of how these different microbes interact with one another over time.
