The photographs of the victims from the Cambodian genocide are what really haunt you.

Pol Pot, the Khmer Rouge, and Genocide in Cambodia
During their three-year, eight-month, and 21-day rule of Cambodia, the Khmer Rouge committed some of the most heinous crimes in modern history:
- The entire population of Cambodia's urban areas was evacuated from their homes and forced to march into rural areas to work the fields.
- Every man, woman, and child was forced into slave labor for 12-15 hours each day.
- An estimated two million people (21% of Cambodia's population) lost their lives. Many of these victims were brutally executed; many more died of starvation, exhaustion, and disease.
That these crimes were committed so recently (1975-1978) makes them all the more sickening. The country's scars are still plainly visible:
- The population is suspiciously youthful (50% is under the age of 15).
- The economy is in shambles. This is partially thanks to the Khmer Rouge's execution of the upper and educated classes. The fact that they destroyed most of the vehicles and machines in the cities can't have helped.
- New human remains turn up around the exhumed mass graves of the Killing Fields of Cheoung Ek on a daily basis. Silent reminders of the tragedy, these bones and teeth are ceremoniously placed into makeshift shrines in tree hollows and cement planters.
It's hard to comprehend the motivations behind an atrocity like the Cambodian genocide. What could have been going through the minds of the Khmer Rouge officers and their leader Pol Pot?
"Hey Pol, I've got an idea, man. Let's turn the country upside down and get real primitive. Evacuate all the cities, march everyone out to the country. And then start farming, man! Big time. And if anyone resists, let's execute them. In fact, let's kill a whole lot of people. I'm talking hundreds of thousands. Maybe millions. And do it real cruel-like. Bash their heads against trees, electrocute 'em, drown 'em in vats of cold water..."
Fear must have been the prevailing motivator in the regime. How could an officer commit such monstrous crimes against his own countrymen? For fear that something even worse would happen to him.
The Khmer Rouge atrocity seems to follow a time-honored recipe for genocide: the obsessive desire to reach a religious or political ideal coupled with a healthy dose of madness.
Why don't we learn? It seems as if past atrocities of genocide haven't served as a warning, but instead as a blueprint for how to repeat them.
But if history has proven human beings to be intrinsically fallible, it has also proven us to be extraordinarily resilient. Pol Pot cast a heavy shadow over Cambodia, but the people have managed to persevere, begin anew, and find joy in life again.

Pol Pot
Pol Pot (/pɒl pɒt/; Khmer: ប៉ុល ពត; 19 May 1925 – 15 April 1998), born Saloth Sar (Khmer: សាឡុត ស), was a Cambodian revolutionary who led the Khmer Rouge from 1963 until 1997. From 1963 to 1981, he served as the General Secretary of the Communist Party of Kampuchea. As such, he became the leader of Cambodia on 17 April 1975, when his forces captured Phnom Penh. From 1976 to 1979, he also served as the prime minister of Democratic Kampuchea.
He presided over a totalitarian dictatorship, in which his government made urban dwellers move to the countryside to work in collective farms and on forced labour projects. The combined effects of executions, strenuous working conditions, malnutrition and poor medical care caused the deaths of approximately 25 percent of the Cambodian population. In all, an estimated 1 to 3 million people (out of a population of slightly over 8 million) died due to the policies of his four-year premiership.
In 1979, after the Cambodian–Vietnamese War, Pol Pot relocated to the jungles of southwest Cambodia, and the Khmer Rouge government collapsed. From 1979 to 1997, he and a remnant of the old Khmer Rouge operated near the border of Cambodia and Thailand, where they clung to power, with nominal United Nations recognition as the rightful government of Cambodia. Pol Pot died in 1998, while under house arrest by the Ta Mok faction of the Khmer Rouge. Since his death, rumours that he committed suicide or was poisoned have persisted.

Plot: In 1985, Pol Pot is on a slow retreat; he's in Cambodia's Battembang Region. Four men hide in a darkened room. Pol Pot enters with his deputy, security chief, and a general. The four men in hiding, without conviction, say "Surprise." A banner says "Happy birthday." A cake and candles appear; the four sing "Happy Birthday" without spirit. The intern is given a piece of cake to taste for poison. Then, all are served a slice. A few presents appear: the deputy unwraps a neck support pillow, a book about management, and a decorative stand reading, "Don't ask me I just work here." The leader wants all to get back to work, but an aide brings one more gift: a puppy. A good gift?

Plot: Using an often surprising manic and fractured style, the film "Liden Tid" (Time Is But Brief), is exploring the visionary possibilities of systematic disorientation of the viewer's senses. Yet, the filmmaker skillfully manages to take the audience through a gut wrenching, nightmarishly absurd tale of a young man, whose life has gotten out of control. The contradiction of relentless desire vs. ultimate destruction taking over the main character's life is summed up in scenes, where a strangely detached American philosopher is spewing dead-on truths about life and death. With a reckless, somewhat sinister distance and dark humor, the director (Anders Bramsen) gives us an unposed picture of a soul, yearning for freedom, and raises the question of what's left when humans are incapable of, or unwilling to live life on life's terms.

The photographs of the victims from the Cambodian genocide are what really haunt you.

Here's an entry I wrote about this:
Pol Pot, the Khmer Rouge, and Genocide in Cambodia
During their three-year, eight-month, and 21-day rule of Cambodia, the Khmer Rouge committed some of the most heinous crimes in modern history:
- The entire population of Cambodia's urban areas was evacuated from their homes and forced to march into rural areas to work the fields.
- Every man, woman, and child was forced into slave labor for 12-15 hours each day.
- An estimated two million people (21% of Cambodia's population) lost their lives. Many of these victims were brutally executed; many more died of starvation, exhaustion, and disease.
That these crimes were committed so recently (1975-1978) makes them all the more sickening. The country's scars are still plainly visible:
- The population is suspiciously youthful (50% is under the age of 15).
- The economy is in shambles. This is partially thanks to the Khmer Rouge's execution of the upper and educated classes. The fact that they destroyed most of the vehicles and machines in the cities can't have helped.
- New human remains turn up around the exhumed mass graves of the Killing Fields of Cheoung Ek on a daily basis. Silent reminders of the tragedy, these bones and teeth are ceremoniously placed into makeshift shrines in tree hollows and cement planters.
It's hard to comprehend the motivations behind an atrocity like the Cambodian genocide. What could have been going through the minds of the Khmer Rouge officers and their leader Pol Pot?
"Hey Pol, I've got an idea, man. Let's turn the country upside down and get real primitive. Evacuate all the cities, march everyone out to the country. And then start farming, man! Big time. And if anyone resists, let's execute them. In fact, let's kill a whole lot of people. I'm talking hundreds of thousands. Maybe millions. And do it real cruel-like. Bash their heads against trees, electrocute 'em, drown 'em in vats of cold water..."
Fear must have been the prevailing motivator in the regime. How could an officer commit such monstrous crimes against his own countrymen? For fear that something even worse would happen to him.
The Khmer Rouge atrocity seems to follow a time-honored recipe for genocide: the obsessive desire to reach a religious or political ideal coupled with a healthy dose of madness.
Why don't we learn? It seems as if past atrocities of genocide haven't served as a warning, but instead as a blueprint for how to repeat them.
But if history has proven human beings to be intrinsically fallible, it has also proven us to be extraordinarily resilient. Pol Pot cast a heavy shadow over Cambodia, but the people have managed to persevere, begin anew, and find joy in life again.

Jemeres Rojos (Khmers rouges en francés;, Khmer Krahom en camboyano) es el nombre con el que fue conocida la organización guerrillera camboyana que, tras la Guerra de Vietnam, la expulsión de los Estados Unidos y el derrocamiento del general Lon Nol (que regía una dictadura militar desde 1970), tomó el poder el 17 de abril de 1975 (la «Caída de Phnom Penh»), fundando la Kampuchea Democrática (KD), un sistema de gobierno de características totalitarias que, bajo la apariencia formal de una República Popular de inspiración maoísta, consolidó en la práctica un sistema de economía radicalmente agraria, bajo la consigna de la evacuación de las ciudades y destrucción de la civilización y cultura urbanas, consideradas burguesas, la reconstrucción social desde los orígenes de la civilización (Camboya Año Cero) y la recuperación de la cultura Jemer ancestral camboyana, bajo la dirección de Pol Pot (Saloth Sar), su principal líder, y el férreo control del ejército campesino sobre las población civil, sometida en buena parte a un régimen de trabajos forzados y a la aplicación de extensos métodos de detención, tortura y asesinato en masa y selectivo, bajo la consigna de la llamada búsqueda del enemigo interno.
Durante los cuatro años que duró su régimen (desde abril de 1975 a octubre de 1979), sus acciones y maneras de imponer su política condujeron a lo que se conoce como el «genocidio camboyano», actos que, en la actualidad, están siendo juzgados por un tribunal internacional en Phnom Penh por crímenes contra la humanidad.1
El fin del régimen de los Jemeres Rojos, en 1979, fue consecuencia de la invasión de Camboya por Vietnam; a partir de ese momento, los Jemeres Rojos se convirtieron en una guerrilla de guerra fría aliada de China y EE. UU. y, una vez que estos les retiraron su apoyo hacia 1989, se adaptó convirtiéndose en una guerrilla del tipo que suele relacionarse con las economías de guerra.
Orígenes:
Jemeres Rojos (su transcripción en francés es Khmer Rouge) es el nombre con el que se conoce habitualmente al oficialmente llamado Partido Comunista de Camboya y después Partido Democrático de Kampuchea. El nombre Jemeres Rojos (en camboyano, Khmae Krojom) fue la manera con que los denominó el rey Norodom Sihanuk en los años 50, y así se popularizó a través del francés. Los miembros de la organización, sin embargo, no lo usaban, entre otras cosas porque preferían el gentilicio kampucheo a khmer (ambas son equivalentes de camboyano o «jemer»).
